***Islam must accept criticism, Australian cardinal says

*** Sydney, Mar. 5, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Charging that “there are Islamists who are at war with the Western world,” Cardinal George Pell told an Australian audience that the question of militant Islam must be addressed directly.

"It’s not appropriate that Muslims regularly reply to criticism with insults, denigration, and evasions while avoiding the point of issue,” Cardinal Pell said at a panel discussion on Islam in Australia.

Stressing that most Muslims are friendly and law-abiding, Cardinal Pell said that it is nevertheless important for all Muslims to respond to reasonable questions about their faith and their attitude toward militant Islamists. In an open society, he said, people should feel free to question others without fearing a hostile reaction. Echoing a statement by Prime Minister John Howard, the cardinal said that “if Catholics rioted in Australia ever time they were criticized, there would be regular riots.”
