Interesting! The story certainly is distorted.
 
Mary is actually very highly spoken of in Islam for some reason, a lot more then you might guess. However no they don’t ever ask for her intercession.

I was not posting positive things about the Koran. I was posting things that I found interesting. I also clearly mentioned that Jesus not being the Son of God was a show stopper.

I believe that ever religion has its good and bad. Catholics certainly have had their share of bad history. The issue is not good or bad stuff. The issue is what Church is the true Church and truly follows God. The Catholic Church is that Church.

Interesting to learn from each other.

TK, why do you think the fact that Jesus is not son of God in Quran is a show stopper? It should be the most appealing point in my opinion, because we all want to believe that God is One and that we only worship Him. Even Christians will claim that God is One, right?

Plus, Jesus not being son of God does not mean he is not appreciated in Islam. He is a great man and a great Prophet.

I am happy for any one of you who is reading the translation of the Quran, and I hope that you read it logically and not with the intention of finding mistakes in it. If you are seeking the truth truly, God will sure guide you, not to Islam, but to the Truth whether it is in Islam or in any other religion!

I am not reading it to find mistakes. I am reading it in order to understand. I see the radicals on TV almost every day shouting “death to America” and killing people…we have seen the radicals drive planes into buildings. I am trying to understand where this comes from. So far, I have seen a few verses that radicals could use, but only if they interpret them poorly.

To me, it is not beautiful to minimize Jesus. You would not think it beautiful if I minimized Mohammed. I believe Jesus is the Son of God and is my Savior. To demote Him to prophet simply is not what I believe.

This does not mean we cannot live together in peace. Jews do not believe He is the Son of God, either, yet we live in peace with them.

its quite common for media to call these people “radicals” but they are simply Muslims who follow Quran to the letter. Nothing has to do with radicalism.

I’ve seen Atheists talk about the Westboro Baptist Church as simply “reading their Bibles” and following a literal interpretation of the Bible instead of just being crazy. But that isn’t true, isn’t it?

Yes, both our radicals and their radicals are just “radicals”
 
I am looking for an answer to the question “There is plenty in (past) LDS teachings which supports radical Mormon belief and behavior. Can I find the same in Islam, or is it a ‘Westboroish’ phenomenon?” There seems to be a disagreement here, so I plan on researching it to find answers for myself.

I disagree. What I have read does not say to act like the radicals are acting.

And the media leaves something to be desired, as usual. Something must be compared to something else. What do we mean when we say someone is “moderate”? That he is nice? What do we mean when we say someone is “radical”? That he is not nice? “Moderate” and “radical” are terms borrowed from American politics. Does it work with the followers of Mohammed? Does it even really work to describe anyone? You first have to decide what that “something else is”. In the case of Christians, it is Jesus. A moderate would be someone who imitated Jesus the best he could. In the case of Muslims, it would be Mohammed, the perfect Muslim.

My Muslim friend said that the English translation is not very accurate. Do you think that is true?

Just think about that. How is it that Islam can be the universal religion for all mankind for all time, and at the same time is revealed in a language that only a few can understand? Remember, most Muslims don’t speak Arabic.

If this is true, then why does nearly every single madrassah and religious school bother to teach Arabic?

Why are there several Muslim countries where it is illegal to recite Qur’an or offer prayers in anything but Arabic?

Why does nearly every single mosque I’ve ever come across offer Arabic classes for converts?

Certainly for the majority of Muslims I’ve ever met, or even generally, learning even the most basic of Arabic language is a must. Most Muslims even if they don’t know much Arabic will know enough for salah prayers, along with basic phrases such as ‘Alhamdulillah’ and ‘A’udu billah min ash-Shaytan ar-rajiim’.

You’re getting ‘speaking fluently’ mixed up with ‘know the basics’.

you clearly haven’t gotten to that part yet. It appears that so far you are reading verses that have been abrogated(which is the first part of Quran). Let me know if you still think this way after you read the 2nd part and hadiths

That’s the issue. The Truth within the Bible will transcend whatever language it is in. The argument that one must know Classical Arabic IOT fully understand the Truth within the Quran is to invalidate the concept of “Truth.”

Look at math. 1+1=2 is True regardless of what language you use. If this statement is only True if you use Roman numerals i+i=ii], how True is it really?
