The reports I read indicate about 25 Christians attending Mass died, including 3 priests. The others killed are Iraqi special forces (who were most likely Muslim), who stormed the church with the intent to save the hostages and kill the criminals.according to this Arabic link, 52 Christians have died…
It is tragic, all the lives lost. Including those who laid down their lives trying to save the hostages from this evil.

This is very sad that they would go to a church and murder some of the members. Has this become the world we live in when you can’t even go to church without the fear of some radical coming in and murdering you. I hope and pray that this makes all Christians around the world even more stronger in their faith, prayers, and daily lives so that one day these radicals will be over come by the power of God through all the Christians prayers and love. And that onoe day they will see their wrong doings and turn to God for forgiveness. We all need to make this part of our daily prayers.

This has been going on in Iraq and other places in the middle east for years. This same cathedral was bombed in 2004, simultaneous with 3 additional Christian churches…15 people were killed.
These evil people are targeting all Christians, not just Catholics.

I realize this was not the first church attacked and that this has been going on for many years. I watch the news. So once again what kind of world are we living in when one has to fear going to church because some radical might blow them up. We need to pray to God to over come these radicals and so they may see their wrong doings.

I’m as appalled at this as anyone else. But I wonder how many non-al-Quaeda Moslems have died as a result of Iraq being invaded? Thousands? Hundreds of thousands?
I don’t think we’re going to get a lot of sympathy from the Moslem world, much as I hate to say it.
It’s one of those things that should have been considered before the decision to invade Iraq was made. When Saddam was in charge, Christians were pretty much left alone. Mind you I think Saddam was an absolute mongrel personally.
But now Iraq has been invaded by the “Christian” West, with a death toll in the thousands if not hundreds of thousands.
One of the most obvious outcomes will be a hardening of attitudes towards Christians. I don’t like to say it, but I think we might see more of this sort of thing.

I remember the Assyrian Catholics there complaining about how the American military would set up location approximating them.
However, these people have been there since the beginning of Christianity. I am beginning to believe that these people were part of the sacrifice to draw out the this infection of the lifestyle of constant killing, even to turning to themselves when they have destroyed their ‘enemies’. With the power of modern media, some day after a number of so many atrocities, the world will finally get its will to defeat them. How many deaths and sacrileges will it take?
The Christians in the South Sudan are now also on the point of being annihilated. The Palestinian Christians are being driven out, the successors to the earliest Christian Jews and Arabs.

In a way you are right and in a way you are wrong. You are right that Christians are not the only victims of the aftermath of the Iraq invasion and focusing on Christian casualties of the war makes muslims think the world think they are worthless . It is exactly like you said… the Iraq invasion resulted in nearly 100.000 deaths … In a way you are wrong because you say you wont get much sympathy from Muslims. Believe me Christians are our neighbours and like our families .
As a muslim , i cannot envision my country Egypt (or any other country in the middle east with traditional Christian history) without a church tower in its skyline. I have many neighbours that are practicing Christians and i have no problems whatsoever with them… in fact i have more problems with my Muslim neighbours. That said… i did encounter some hostility as a muslim from ‘‘some’’ Orthodox Christians . But this was like 1 in ten Orthodox guys … Most Catholic and Evangelical christians in Egypt are patriotic.
The Middle east is complex but it is not beyound comprehension. Most Alqaida and the likes are Criminals and uneducated fools that got recruited and charged with wrong ideas. The Middle east is poor and uneducated and there is abundance of the sort. Invasions and the like will only result in chaos… no muslim can contain such a chaos.
The problems of the middle east start with 3
1- Israel
2- Dictatorships
3- Foreign interference
when the above 3 are solved then we are able to tackle
4- Human development
5- Education and culture of diversity
6- Economy
The problem is that the first 3 problems are a hindrance against the development on the second 3 problems… sound simplistic… sound unrelated… when you are an insider like me the fine lines show. And before any body jumps on me to say that i want to eradicate jews or stuff like that … i dont. I just know from the bottom of my heart that the current modern state of Israel is an artificial state that is not and wil not be part of the area as long as it doesnt want to be part of the area… How can Israel be part of the middle east if palestinians cant get their rights? The additional truth is that if palestinians get their rights. Israel will be arab. and it will join the arab world again and there will be no problem.
I sincerely hope that the middle east will keep its christians and jews and even have the ones that immigrated to come back.

now up to 58 in the stars and stripes, this does not include the wounded. Iraqi Christians make up only .18 % of the population of this country. and the Sabiens, who are the spiritual descendants of John the baptist are even less. both are persecuted minorities. prayers for these people and their families left behind.

and how many civilians have benefited from the invasion? hundreds?hundreds of thousands? actually more. schools are open, people are getting cleaner water, and better power supplies. we have an “army” of civilian contractors, who work their tails off, teaching better farming techniques, buisness etc. we are getting city councils to do more work, and be more accountable to their people. these people do not want us to leave. we did the right thing invading Iraq. the peoples live have been elevated considerably. how bout you look into coming over here, and doing some good. you would be more than welcome too. This is terrible, we need to work harder for peace. most of us didn’t choose their religion, sex, race or country etc… why to kill a person or act superior to him for something that he didn’t choose it at the fist place.
