I thought I would post this, since we are in such trying times. I went to a talk by a lady, a Catholic professor, who has been studying Islam. It was a very good talk, one in which she tried to present what the Quran teaches, and what are “myths”. I actually got to ask a question, if the Islamic religion is not one that supports the kind of terrorism we see in the world today, why don’t we hear more from the mainstream condemning such actions?

She said that some of that is media, and in fact she presented the following list of Islamic organizations that have come out with some sort of public condemnation of violence and terrorism in the name of Islam. I got a copy of the list as I thought it was pretty impressive:

I am starting to believe that like any religion, extremists capture the headlines and paint a bad picture of the people and their faith. Maybe we will see more progress in this area in 2008.

Gosh, I am just trying to help. Instead of being so confrontational and arrogant, why don’t you reply with some facts so we can all learn? If this information is incorrect, please enlighten. A childish response doesn’t really help anyone learn does it?

Are you saying these organizations have not condemned terrorism?

Well I just randomly grabbed the name of one of these organizations, United Muslims of America, found their web site, and looked around. Here is what they say:
Why is there so much fighting within the Muslim world?
Globalization has squeezed together people of different cultures tighter than ever before increasing tension between geographically adjacent groups. As the level of violent conflict has increased many political groups have misappropriated religious themes to justify the killing of their neighbors. Thus while the fighting may externally appear to be religiously driven the true underlying cause is often economic.
**
Does the Koran tell Muslims to kills Jews & Christians?**
The Koran is very clear is stating that the Muslim religion is continuation of the Jewish and Christian faiths. A Muslim holds Torah and Gospels as revelations given to Jewish and Christians. A Muslim is not a Muslim if he does not believe in Torah, Gospels, Psalms and The Quran. He also believes in spiritual teachings from all the Holy Scriptures.
Unfortunately terrorist and hate groups interpret the scriptures in a very narrow minded way. They often brand Jews and Christians as infidels (i.e. non-believers) even though there is no scriptural basis, to justify killing innocent people. The Quran calls them, “People of The Book” and calls Christians and Jews people with faith just as Muslims. All religions have extremist element and Muslims are not immune to extremism too. But this is not the way the majority of Muslim community thinks or behaves.
While we never know what is in people’s heart, this seems to be pretty direct in how they feel about terrorism.

So Booklover if you can help promote some productive understanding of this issue please do. I am of course Catholic and would like to learn if something I learned and posted here is incorrect.

Thanks.

You should read the Four Stages of Islamic Treachery

**FACT #3: **
IN ISLAMIC TEACHING, THE END ALWAYS JUSTIFIES THE MEANS: Islamists have no respect for the rules, laws or values of the non-Islamic world, to them only the rules of the Islamic world are legitimate. In their mind, when they destroy the non-Islamic world then the rules will change to Islamic rules, laws and values.

**FACT #4: **
ISLAMISTS CONSIDER TREATIES WITH NON-MUSLIMS AS NON-BINDING. When in non-Muslim countries they will pretend a social behavior as a cover up to their true intentions of domination over the non Muslim world.

TIP: When it comes to Islamists, ALWAYS LOOK AT WHAT THEY DO, NEVER WHAT THEY SAY: Lying, treachery and deceit are the Islamists’ tactic of choice in their jihad of conquest of the non-Muslim world. This tactic (AL-TAQIYYA, or religious deception, pretending to be friends of the Non-Muslims in order to strengthen themselves against them) is a commonly practiced by Islamists. DECEPTION IS THE KEY TACTIC EMPLOYED BY ISLAMISTS.

**FACT #5: **
As a rule of thumb to get the truth from any Islamist, simply reverse what they say to a non-Muslim.

Interesting. To me, a Catholic, these “facts” seem just like prejudicial rant. Is there a source for these statements in their teaching?

I hope someone doesn’t counter with hate-Christian sites as “proof” of the true Christianity. That would be pretty unproductive.

**Unbelievers **

2:191, And slay them wherever ye catch them
2:193, And fight them on until there is no more Tumult or oppression
2:216, Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you
3:28, Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah
4:48 “Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin Most heinous indeed.”
4:84, Then fight in Allah’s cause - Thou art held responsible only for thyself - and rouse the believers. It may be that Allah will restrain the fury of the Unbelievers; for Allah is the strongest in might and in punishment.
4:141, And never will Allah grant to the unbelievers a way (to triumphs) over the believers
5:33, The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter;
8:12, I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them

See link for more of the intolerant teachings of the Quran!

Keep burying your head in the sand!

Read Islam is the Enemy of Freedom by ex-Muslim Amil Imani!

"A great irony of the age is that the seemingly most diehard proponents of freedom—the useful idiots of our time—are the most dangerous unwitting accomplices of liberty’s enemy—Islam. Keep in mind that the very name “Islam” is a derivation of “taslim,” the Arabic word for “surrender,” surrender to the will and dictates of Allah as revealed by Muhammad and recorded in the Quran.

This non-negotiable surrender to Islam requires the individual as well as the society to disenfranchise themselves of many of the fundamental and deeply cherished human rights. Below is a brief presentation of what this surrender to Islam entails and why it is imperative that all freedom-loving people arise and defeat the menace of Islamofascism." Amil Imani

Are you saying these organizations have not condemned terrorism?
While I admit I have not investigated any of your organizations, a quick look shows that MOST of these are organizations based in North America. I will not say that they are lying, but what would you expect them to say if they wished to remain “neutral”?

It is wrong to say that if 1.5 billion people in almost 60 countries, their governments, organizations, leaders and scholars cannot organize or coordinate among themselves to present a unified display (in action, not words) of condemnation of violence that satisfies every person in the world, then they are engaging in “Lying, treachery and deceit”. Furthermore Muslims do not have a central religious authority like the Catholics that can act on behalf of all Muslims.

Nevertheless here are some examples of what the mainstream and majority Muslims have done:

A summary of Worldwide Muslim Condemnation of Terrorism

Not Just Words: Various American Muslim campaigns against terrorism

A 68 page comprehensive collection of press releases, statements and resolutions.

Keep in mind that there are Muslim communists, Muslim dictators, Muslim capitalists, Muslim Free Masons, Muslim Kings and Queens etc with their own ideologies and thinking just like any group. No one can expect a group that is larger than the Catholics to be in unison on all issues.

Another year has gone by since we were attacked by Muslim fanatics on 9/11/2001. To this day, the arrests and convictions of those plotting attacks against the United States continue. Although the nineteen hijackers that carried out this attack were incinerated while doing their deed for “Allah”, the words and teachings that steered their course in life were not. They are being repeated by Imams in the mosques, Islamic professors on college campuses, by teachers in Islamic schools, and by Muslim radicals cloaked as civil rights groups across this nation. As long as they remain, so does the threat of another attack.

We will never forget.

May God bless the United States, and its people.

This thread is about Islamic organizations condemning not condoning violence.

The quotes posted could have be taken out of context, partial quotes, mis quotes or mis translated.

For example, when the Hamas statement was given by Nihad Awad, Hamas had not engaged in any violent acts and was not declared a terrorist organization by either Israel or US.

Thus without knowing the background of these quotes one cannot be so naive as to take these at face value and say that these 10 Muslims should represent the 1.5 billion Muslims and not the hundreds and thousands of other statements by Muslim leaders across the world.

Booklover no one is disputing that Muslim terrorists exist.

My original point was that many Muslims are not in agreement with that. Continued bitterness and refocus on the terrorists, while an important issue, is not the point of the thread, and has in fact made me believe that the many organizations who condemn terrorism are likely genuine, because you nor anyone else so far has address that issue.

You just keep throwing up pictures of terrorists and quoting racially charged attacks against Muslims in general that really cannot be verified or disputed. How are we to learn about that? And how is your behavior different from that which you condemn?

Your quotes from the hate sites could be Hitler speaking about the Jews in the 30s. Have you ever seen this approach be productive to peace? How about how the Pope is dealing with the Muslims, why not take a cue from that? Do you see him, Christ’s Vicar on earth, taking this hateful approach?

To continue a focus on hate-sites and assumptions that all are like the worst terrorists is the same prejudice practiced many times in the world by many non-Islamics. Prejudice is certainly not Christian.

Maybe if you tried to search out those who agree with you in the fight against terrorism, despite the fact they don’t agree with you or I in faith, you would find a more productive way to deal with this important world issue. I am sure you are well aware both sides can name call, create hate-sites, scandalize, and threaten. Where do you think that ends up, have you thought about it?

If you have information about the organizations and their positions on terrorism, please help. I think we get it that there are Islamic terrorists in the world and the USA, you don’t need to keep drilling that point home. I am looking hopefully for people of other faiths that will gather together to eliminate this problem from the world. People on both sides that insist on fighting are not part of the solution.

Peace and God bless - let’s both pray on it, maybe it will help. I’ll close with this quote from a recent event I am sure you are familiar with, and I hope you don’t disagree with the hope many see from this:
More than 130 Muslim scholars and religious leaders will issue a Christmas message of thanks and greetings to the Christian world this weekend as part of a growing movement to strengthen mainstream Islam against violent extremism and to promote inter-faith dialogue.
The message, hailed as unique and historic by theologians on both sides
*, follows a letter by the same group to Pope Benedict XVI, accepting his invitation to the Vatican and proposing outlines of an agenda focusing on theological, social and moral issues.*

Telling the truth about Islam is not hate! You just refuse to see it, and continue to believe the fiction that Islam is a religion of peace! Most of the people on those so-called “hate” sites receive death threats from your “peaceful” Muslims all the time.

Love is not Tolerance

By Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it. It does penance for the sins of others, but it is not broadminded about sin. The cry for tolerance never induces it to quench its hatred of the evil philosophies that have entered into contest with the Truth. It forgives the sinner, and it hates the sin; it is unmerciful to the error in his mind. The sinner it will always take back into the bosom of the Mystical Body; but his lie will never be taken into the treasury of His Wisdom.

Real love involves real hatred: whoever has lost the power of moral indignation and the urge to drive the buyers and sellers from the temples has also lost a living, fervent love of Truth.

Charity, then, is not a mild philosophy of “live and let live”; it is not a species of sloppy sentiment. Charity is the infusion of the Spirit of God, which makes us love the beautiful and hate the morally ugly.

It is a myth to believe that only a tiny percentage of Muslims espouse violence.

According to this recent Pew Research survey, among AMERICAN Muslims, only 51% think Islamic extremism is something to be concerned about. In Spain, only 29% think that Muslim extremism is a problem.

Digging further (download the full PDF version) we see that just 8% of US Muslim think suicide bombing is at least sometimes justified, while 58% have a favorable view of Al Qaeda. Among younger (under 30) the numbers are far worse. 15% think suicide bombings can be justified and 74% think favorably of Al Qaeda.

The numbers are worse for Muslims in Europe.

Sorry, Awalt, but your assertions are not supported by data.

It is a myth that a majority of muslims espouse violence.

This reminds me of a Mori poll carried out by the Times newspaper after the 9/11 attacks. This poll observed that 1/4 of muslims approved of the attacks.

While making a big meal of evil muslims living in our midst, the newspaper forgot to mention that samples are only about 1000 people, probably from one area of the world, clearly unrepresentative of the 2.5 million muslims in the UK who come from many different parts of the world, speaking numerous different languages.

2ndly, if 1/4 of the muslims sampled agreed with the attacks, this means 3/4 of muslims polled DID NOT agree with the attacks. The newspaper kept very quiet about this bit, as did many folks I know who read the article. I had to point it out to them that the newspaper emphasised the bits that appealed to people’s prejudices and downplayed any data that disagreed.

For the 2 above reasons, no serious stastician would take seriously the results of the poll.

Western newspapers are generally biased against muslims - knowing this bias, why would anyone assume these newspapers are telling the truth when they go scaremongering against muslims?

The pewresearch poll would appear of the same type of flawed data gathering as the Times/Mori poll which is then deliberately misinterpreted to provoke hate against muslims in general.
