I do not give this any more credence that Robert Sungenis’ claim that the Earth is the center of the Solar System/Universe. There are lots of people with odd ideas out there; religion notwithstanding.
 
the Quran does state that the earth is spread like a carpet.

Not that I doubt you, but can you cite a reference?

Even if it did, as I said in my earlier post, there are weird people in every religion.

Sura Al-Kahf (18:47): And (remember) the Day We shall cause the mountains to pass away (like clouds of dust), and you will see the earth as a levelled plain, and we shall gather them all together so as to leave not one of them behind.

Sura Taha (20:53) : Who has made earth for you like a bed (spread out); and has opened roads (ways and paths etc.) for you therein; and has sent down water (rain) from the sky. And We have brought forth with it various kinds of vegetation.

Sura Az-Zukhruf (43:10) : Who has made for you the earth like a bed, and has made for you roads therein, in order that you may find your way.

Sura Az-Zukhruf (43:38): Till, when (such a one) comes to Us, he says [to his Qarîn (Satan / devil companion)] “Would that between me and you were the distance of the two easts (or the east and west)” a worst (type of) companion (indeed)!

Sura An-Naba (78:6) :Have We not made the earth as a bed,

I’m impressed. Instead of my asking for proof, rpp asks for proof, so Vickie gets it. Sow now if I want Vickie to do something, get rpp to tell her. 👍

And now I get to respond to the Qur’an, my favorite thing to do.

Verse 1, Surat al Kahf: Sura Al-Kahf (18:47): And (remember) the Day We shall cause the mountains to pass away (like clouds of dust), and **you will see **the earth as a levelled plain, and **we shall gather **them all together so as to leave not one of them behind.

The word “remember” is not in the Arabic. This verse is talking about something that WILL happen in the future. It doesn’t say the earth is flat–it is saying that God WILL flatten the earth (in the future.)

Verse 2, Sura Taha (20:53) : **Who has made earth for you like a bed (spread out); **and has opened roads (ways and paths etc.) for you therein; and has sent down water (rain) from the sky. And We have brought forth with it various kinds of vegetation.

This verse says that the earth is expansive, like a bed or a carpet spread out. Saying the earth is flat? Nope. Saying that the earth is VAST. And that we can roam about in it as we please, on roads. That we have water from the sky from God, and vegetation.

Verse 3 in Surah Zukhruf 43:10 is the same as verse 2, see its explanation.

Verse 4 Surah Zukhruf 43:38 represents an Arabic idiom. Also not saying that the earth is flat, not even suggesting it, but an expression of vastly infinite distance, from which the person would want to be separated from the evil companion.

Verse 5, Surat an-Naba has the same explanation as verse 2–the earth is being called expansive and vast. Not flat. 🙂
 
Oh by the way, I love it when you post Qur’an. It gives me more Qur’an to read, and the Qur’an always supports what I have to say, so my faith is only increased by reading it. 🙂

comparing the earth to a bed & carpet certainly gives the wrong impression. there are a gazillion ways of saying the earth is large without comparing it to a flat rectangle. thus this verse is still a negative point.
 
It seems to me that the problem with the Muslim researcher that says the earth is flat and much larger than the sun is that he is reading the Koran literally as being true in all its aspects.

Christians used to read the Bible in much the same way. When confronted with facts that reason held true, but seemed to contradict what the Bible said, Christians were able to understand that the Bible tells us about the nature of God and God’s relationship to His creation. And that the Bible was never a science book. In fact, Catholic teaching is that reason and revelation (faith) can never contradict one another. That was what Pope Benedict was talking about at Regensburg.

4.89 : They desire that you should disbelieve as they have disbelieved, so that you might be (all) alike; therefore take not from among them friends until they fly (their homes) in Allah’s way; but if they turn back, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them, and take not from among them a friend or a helper.

Wonderful. 🙂

It’s a great passage. First it described the creation of Adam. Then it describes how a fertilized egg (what’s the word, zygote?) clings to the womb of the mother. And then it describes how the egg develops into clinging thing like a leech (because it derives nourishment from its attachment to the inside of the womb!) And then it describes how that clinging thing begins to look like something that has been chewed. Subhaanallah. I love Qur’an. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Bible does the same thing by saying there are four corners of the earth. But it’s a metaphor, of course.

In this case I agree with you. While I personally think there are some faults with Koran, I believe that it, like the Bible, is not intended to be a book about science or the natural world.
 
But don’t tell that to the Muslims. Quran contains many scientific facts that’ve recently been uncovered by 20th century technology. :cool:
