This morning i’ve been having a friendly debate with a co worker. They are non practicing Christian who is very young and liberal. They are arguing Muslims are more conservative than Christians.

They say based on their study of religions and the simialites between the two overall Muslims are more conservative.

What are logical arguements i can use to debate her.

Thanks!

Middle Eastern socities, and Islamic societies are usually more conservative than the Western ones because of cultural pressure. The US for example is an open culture country, people can do/wear whatever they want, this cannot happen in the middle East or Islamic countries even if people want so that is why they leave their countries to do whatver they want.

What’s their definition of “conservative”? Chances are it has something to do with how much freedom their women are allowed.

When I think of “conservative” vis-a-vis religion, I’m thinking looking back to established tradition from the OT times, including:
  • view on homosexual conduct
  • view on extramarital sex
  • view on polygamy
  • view on pornography
  • view on dress
  • view on graven images
to name the first ones that come to mind.

In some areas it is definitely more liberal. I know Western society allows same sex marraige but certainly not pedophilia. I don’t know of any Western countries that allow polygamy too. And this is not counting Christianity yet.

Well, in general your friend is more or less correct. Muslims are often conservative by our western standards. The girl I’m dating is Muslim and while pretty liberal by Middle Eastern standards, she very conservative by western ones. Again, that is in general.

Now as someone else pointed out, if you really want to be completely accurate you would want to approach things on a case by case basis. Like pedophilia is not as big a deal in Muslim nations, where as here even the most left leaning would be appalled by the idea. So in this case westerners are more conservative.

Also, I think that the reaction to an immoral deed might be being taken into account. Like both Christians and Muslims believe that pre-marital sex is a sin. However, Christians will forgive that, but in some cases like in Pakistan and Afghanistan that might bring a death sentence (for the girl anyway). So does the punishment make them more conservative even if the philosophy is more or less agreed upon?

What is it that you are trying to defend as “conservative” that might help us out here.

The UK recognizes polygamous marriages of immigrants but doesn’t allow people to marry more then one person within UK borders.

Thanks for pointing that out. What I really mean is, beside the Muslims and non-locals, [who would insist if they can get it, to have their own law pertaining to family affair and marraiges].

Please clarify that, because in Islam, a Muslim woman is not suppose to practice dating without at least an engagement, because simply it would lead to a sin.

So I would like to know from you as a Catholic person, where this dating would lead you, to a possible marriage or to something else, please clarify.

‘Conservative’ Islam??? How about ‘fascistic’ Islam? Beating women in public for showing an inch of their naked ankle isn’t ‘conservative’. It’s insanely inhuman, not to mention the really horrendous atrocities fanatical Islam commits on a daily basis all over the Muslim world.

The word “Christians” doesn’t mean anything. There are many different Christians Churches, denominations and sects. Some of them are too liberal, some are too conservative.
Catholic Church is conservative enough. Islam is illogical and barbarian. Mohamet was a paedofile - had had sex with a 13-year- old girl who was his wife, and with other women. Was he conservative? Other muslims just follow in his footsteps.
