Verisimilitude

Did the suggestion come from allah, mohammed himself, or his friend?

317 Sahih Bukhari.
Narrated Anas: When Allah’s Apostle married Zainab bint Jahsh, he made the people eat meat and bread to their fill (by giving a Walima banquet). Then he went out to the dwelling places of the mothers of the believers (his wives), as he used to do in the morning of his marriage. He would greet them and invoke good on them, and they (too) would return his greeting and invoke good on him. When he returned to his house, he found two men talking to each other; and when he saw them, he went out of his house again. When those two men saw Allah’s Apostle: going out of his house, they quickly got up (and departed). I do not remember whether I informed him of their departure, or he was informed (by somebody else). So he returned, and when he entered the house, he lowered the curtain between me and him. Then the Verse of Al-Hijab was revealed.

313 Sahih Bukhari.
Narrated Umar: I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Good and bad persons enter upon you, so I suggest that you order the mothers of the Believers (i.e. your wives) to observe veils.” Then Allah revealed the Verses of Al-Hijab.

O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e.screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever OftForgiving, Most Merciful.
( سورة الأحزاب , Al-Ahzab, Chapter #33, Verse #59)

Based upon the hadith (#313 & #317) it was because men at his wedding banquet were looking at his other wives, and then Umar suggested what then was revealed by allah. I’m not sure how this was/is intended to make women more respectable when any fault was/is the men who look at them.

Another popular story to show the mercy and compassion of Muhammed.

There came to him (the Holy Prophet) a woman from Ghamid and said: Allah’s Messenger, I have committed adultery, so purify me. He (the Holy Prophet) turned her away. On the following day she said: Allah’s Messenger, Why do you turn me away? Perhaps, you turn me away as you turned away Ma’iz. By Allah, I have become pregnant. He said: Well, if you insist upon it, then go away until you give birth to (the child). When she was delivered she came with the child (wrapped) in a rag and said: Here is the child whom I have given birth to. He said: Go away and suckle him until you wean him. When she had weaned him, she came to him (the Holy Prophet) with the child who was holding a piece of bread in his hand. She said: Allah’s Apostle, here is he as I have weaned him and he eats food. He (the Holy Prophet) entrusted the child to one of the Muslims and then pronounced punishment. And she was put in a ditch up to her chest and he commanded people and they stoned her. Khalid b Walid came forward with a stone which he flung at her head and there spurted blood on the face of Khalid and so he abused her. Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) heard his (Khalid’s) curse that he had huried upon her. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Khalid, be gentle. By Him in Whose Hand is my life, she has made such a repentance that even if a wrongful tax-collector were to repent, he would have been forgiven. Then giving command regarding her, he prayed over her and she was buried. (Book #017, Hadith #4206) Sahih Muslim translated by Abdul Hamid Siddiqui.

Do Muslims think a women who dresses as she is told, or as the law requires, is more virtious than a women who dresses modestly in accordance to her own desires? Who is the more virtuious, a Muslim women following the law only because it is the law or an American women who dresses modestly because she knows that is the moral thing to do?

I believe Muslim thought is without regard to virtue. The only thing that matters is Islamic domination for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Submission is all that is required. Common sense, Free Will, and personal freedoms play no role in the Islamic worldview.

The defenders of the faith would probably say we are being ethnocentric and judgemental. But, jeez…you are right…peaceful Islam seems as much an oxymoron as there ever was.

Are you basing your opionions on your experiences with Muslims or what you read or saw on the Internet?

I am not a Muslim, in fact I am a Catholic. I have spent quite a bit of time in Islamic countries, primarily Morocco and Iraq. I am not an apologist for Islam, but I will relate my experiences.

I have had many Muslim friends. Contrary to the propaganda that passes for news, the majority of Muslims are very peaceful and friendly. Aside from the radical groups who are attempting to kill anyone who does not believe the same thing that they do, most Muslims are quite tolerant about religious beliefs. There are Christian churches in both Morocco and Iraq. Nations like Iran and Saudi Arabia are another matter.

As I said, I am a Catholic, not a Muslim, but I get annoyed when I hear people repeating what they have heard. If this was Germany in 1936, you guys would be saying that about Jews. Stop and think what you sound like!

The media is pure propaganda. They have been doing a job on Catholics for years. Look at how Catholic priests are perceived. Muslims are getting the same treatment.

Don’t be part of the problem, become part of the solution.

I get very little of my view of Islam from the internet. I like books. The Koran and the history of Muhammed is a good basis. Yes, I know and have Muslim friends.

It is easy to be tolerant when you are in the minority. How many new churches have been built in Pakistan, Syria, Egypt, Yemen, Kuwait, or Jordan?

Like the Jews in 1939 Germany.

What is your idea of a solution and will your Muslim friends in those countries you visited agree with it?

My solution is to stop insulting these people. The typical Muslim is friendly and hospitable. Why do you want to treat these people like your enemy? Is that the way you would like to be treated?

When people treat me kindly, I try to reciprocate. It is easy to make enemies, by why would you want to?

What was insulting about the OP? I quoted two hadith and one quranic passage and asked a question.

Are you saying the hijab has a respectful origin, or that the compassion of Muhammed, which is central to all Muslims, is misconstrued?
