Isn't a relationship with Jesus more important than religion?

I have a friend who is protestant and they are big on “its not about religion but a relationship with Jesus” though I know they are partially right how can I explain why magisterium, tradition, and scripture are as important.

Hi,

Without the Catholic Church’s existence, they would have no relationship with Jesus and they would not have the New Testament either. Whatever Christian heritage that Protestant churches have, rests on the Catholic Church which preceded it by sixteen centuries. This is just a matter of history.
