Those (like myself) who recognize active homosexuality for what it is… intrinsically sinful… are often referred to as “homophobes”; one who is afraid of active homosexuality.

I’ve decided not to take it anymore. I’ve coined my own phrase; “homotaedet”. One who is disgusted by active homosexuality.

Yes Homophobe is defenitly the wrong word. That is just used to try to make people think your a Biggot.
I like your word. But can you break down the Pronunciation so I can get it right when I say it:)

if homophobe was used merely to describe people that were violent toward gays then it would not be a bad word. instead it is used to very broadly paint anyone who thinks that the act of homosexuality is a sin.

i have a lot of sympathy for those who suffer from ssa. i can’t imagine what a large cross it is to carry to have attractions for your own gender and not be able to act upon them. further i highly admire and am in awe of those who choose a celibate lifestyle for the sake of their beliefs. yet, by many people would think that i was a homophobe because i think that the act of homosexuality is a sin.

we either need to narrow the definition of a homophobe or we need to throw it out all together.

I agree with this (would go further to say that it applies to just about all labels with negative associations, though). Also think its possible to take the truth that homosexuality is a sin to a level of bigotry, though (I have gay friends. They know how I feel. If I stopped being their friend, I would feel obligated to cease being the friend of every other variety of sinner, and I wouldn’t have any friends, least of all myself 🙂 ).

It is just a word to shut people up. If you start saying anything negative about the homosexual lifestyle, you are a homophobe. This kind of name-calling is detrimental and eliminates discussion.

I agree!

They don’t want discussion because you might have a valid point about homosexual acts being disordered… And it might make them feel “icky” about themselves. We have become a nation of whimps here… we are so afraid of making anyone feel bad, or guilty, or unhappy that we shut our mouths and we don’t speak up for what is right. Then when things get carried too far, we cry, “What has happened to our society?” We shut our mouths that’s what!!!

I think they actually intended to use the other meaning of “-phobe” which is aversion or hatred of. BUT, it still is incorrect.

I always laughed when people first started using this word because if you break down the parts it more or less has nothing to do with sexuality – sexuality is not in the word itself – it has only *come to mean *that.

If it were truly “translated into English” (or more accurately from ignorant English to proper English) it is as follows (from American Heritage dictionary)

homo–

PREFIX: Same; like

–phobe

SUFFIX: One that fears or is averse to a specified thing

So in essence it means “a fear or aversion to a same or like.” Which makes no sense. Same what?

Anyway…

Actually, “homophobe” could act as a synonym for both heterosexual men and lesbians. “Homo” means “man” in Latin; and “phobe” is from the Greek for “aversion”. So, those who have an aversion to having sex with men, or “homophobes”: heterosexual men and lesbians (and also celibates!).

Robo,
If my rusty Latin serves me… it’s pronounced “TAY-det”.

words…the word ‘square’ meant ,from 1880 to 1950…fair and honest…then in a 1950 episode of honeymooners…Norton yelled at Ralph…‘hey ,durr, how come someone so round can be so square?..laugh track…then all the sit coms took up the hatchet…and soon,to be called "a square’ meant you were outdated and naiive!..thus was a subliminal smear against the greatest president…Teddy Roosevelt cemented in the publics mind…TR then was …outdated and child like.not to be taken seriously…mind alterning drugs for years were called ‘dope’ for it took a dope to take the poison…then our rulers changed it to…what…a nice word that works in a subliminal way into a kids mind…ie.maws kitchen…you guessed it…POT…losers for years…like Van Gogh an other junkies were called Bohemians…then beat niks…but when the Nam war arrived…guess what…they were called Hippies…they were hip…or totally aware ie:superior …so its not surprising the same 'masters of deceit ’ use buzz words to neutralize any opposition to a movement of theirs…read 1984 and Brave new world …Nino

t makes perfect sense if you understand Greek. Fear of the same is fear of anyone who has similar characteristics; as the word is put together, the characteristics are understood to be gender, as in fearing your own gender.

Just as homophile would be an attraction to one’s own gender.

Not only am I a homophobe, I am a sin-phobe in general. I have a horror of sin as I know the damage it does to souls!

Yes, but my point was that there is no part of the word that refers to sexuality

I wonder how many men on these forums would be willing to give a brotherly hug to someone who mentioned being “homophile”. I know I would have no problem with it no matter what anyone wants to call me.😛

I could do it.

hehehe Well if you want to be exact about words the Catholic church and the members that support it are without a doubt, bigots. Now if that is good or bad is up for debate. 😛

As for homophobe if you examine it piece by piece its a bad term, but the english langauge butchers so many words, does it really matter. The point is the way the majority of the population defines a word, that is what ultimatley gives the word meaning. To them it means fears of gays. Well if you examine it you are affraid of gays. The church even teaches that the acceptance of active homosexauls will destroy the family and ultimately civilization. Is it rational, is it not rational ? Who knows, only time will tell, but you are affraid of gays that can not be denied.

Disagreeing with an immoral agenda is not being afraid of particular persons. Fear is not the issue.

That word, like the term “gay”, seem to be propaganda words used to change how we view bad actions.

It is almost like brainwashing.

The term is used to immediately shut down the discussion of the morality of homosexual behavior. Thus instead of actually debateing one on this isse the homosexual apologist dismisses you as a 'homophobe: and moves on.

True homophobia is so rare there are less people with it than there are those who enage in homosexual behavior

Well, ‘xenophobia’ doesn’t usually refer to people who run away shrieking in terror from foreigners. It’s generally understood to be rabid hatred of outsiders, or anyone ‘different’ and the term homophobia is used the same way, however pastiche its origin may be. Fear and hatred are so closely intertwined, after all.

Often when perusing these fora over the last year, I have found myself saying, sotto voce, ‘Xenophobes of the world, unite!’ halfway between laughter and sadness.
