Isn't it unfair that time can trap us into dying in mortal sin?

As Catholics, we believe that a person can be in the state of grace and, if that person dies in the state of grace, they will go to Heaven. However, if a person dies in mortal sin, he or she will go to hell. What is the explanation I can give to someone who expresses disbelief that God would let someone go to Hell based upon when they die – in the state of grace or in sin? We are already trapped by time and on many occasions, we (hopefully) regret our sins, go to confession and are forgiven. What’s to say that, if given the time, we would have done this again but for the interruption of death? It seems unfair. Do you have anything I can read? - THanks

Hey, hey, hey! What may I ask is unfair about being responsible for the choices we make? Hell is not foisted on us; it is freely chosen. A person does not just happen to be in the state of mortal sin. He or she has freely made a choice away from God. No one can look at the love God has shown us on Good Friday and honestly accuse HIM of being unfair. To sin at any time is unfair to Him.
