I posted this on another thread…but it really should have a thread of its own. I pose this question to all non catholics…to anyone who is not a part of the church, but professes to LOVE our savior!!! God bless you all!
Code:
Here is a question that has been on my heart.... I will give a little background to help understand why I ask..
Before my conversion, I was a very strong “Bible alone” Christian. I loved Jesus with such an unquenchabel thirst! I studied my Bible and loved the Word of God. Everytime I could find an opportunity to share the Bible, to share my faith, to serve in church, to serve the community, I jumped on it! All because I wanted to grow closer to Christ! In school I would always carry my Bible on top of my books, to show that I held the Word of God above everything else. I poured over the scriptures, searching for new ways to know and understand my Lord.

I remember looking at Catholics, and wondering to myself “WHY do they have all that extra stuff?” Why do catholics pray to mary? Why do catholics practice all these unnecesary tradtions??? It’s not in the Bible! Don’t they know all they need is Jesus and the Bible? They are missing out on a TRUE relationship with Christ! I wish they could just see and know Him like I do!

I was THIRSTY for Christ! And it didnt’ seem to me that Catholics were thirsty for anything but unecesary rituals and prayers that SHOULD be directed to Jesus!

But here is what I didn’t see.

In the Catholic church, SEEKING Jesus isn’t about pouring over the scriptures or praying to grow closer to Him. These are all still VERY important things to do, and something that catholics who are serious about their faith WILL do… But seeking Jesus is much more simple than I ever realized.
I remember singing the song when I was protestant “This is the air I breathe.”

The words were: (and maybe you know it)

This is the air I breathe.
This is the air I breathe.
Your very presence.
Living, in me.

And I’m desperate for you.
And I’m hungry for you.
And I’m thirsty for you.
Jesus.

I thought being hungry for Jesus was about discovering Him in just the scriptures. I thought thirsting for Jesus was growing closer to Him in prayer.

But while all of these are good things…what Jesus REALLY asks of us, is that we simply come to Him. That we make ourselves little, like children and obediently, faithfully, lovingly, approach Him. He said in the Bible “this is my body, which will be given up for you.” And many of His disciples left him! Saying “Lord! This is a difficult teaching! Who can accept this?”

But he didn’t correct them, or take back what he said… He asked Peter if He too would leave. And it was PETER who said “Lord where would we turn? You have the words of eternal life.”

Why would it be a “hard teaching” to accept if Christ had not meant it literally? Why would some of his disciples leave him, if it was not truly radical to them? To eat the flesh and drink the blood of Christ? Cannibalism??? But our Lord did not correct them or take back His words.

Today, most Christian churches reject Christ, saying “this is a hard teaching, who can accept it?” because they refuse to be obedient to him as little children. They refuse to stay with him because they cannot accept a teaching they don’t understand. But PETER’s church…the church founded on the apostles who loved Him, have stayed with Chirst. Just as they stayed with Him when He first instituted the eucharist, so too does the church today. The Catholic church has stayed WITH CHRIST for 2000 years, even though others have left because they refused Him.

Let me ask you this… put aside what you believe about Catholics and the eucharist. Put aside whether or not you think it’s true. Imagine for one moment that it IS TRUE. Imagine, that it really IS CHRIST, as He said in the scriptures, who is THERE, present among us in the Catholic church! In every mass! If this was TRUE… wouldn’t you come RUNNING to Him? Wouldn’t you abandon everything you thought you knew, and embrace Him after “searching” and having a “prayerful personal relationship” with Him? Wouldn’t you come CRAWLING on your hands and knees because it’s JESUS!!! ?

Because either the Catholic church is right… That Christ truly did promise us that when we celebrate mass we eat of his flesh and drink of his blood, that “he who does not eat of my flesh or drink of my blood has NO LIFE within him”

or

Catholics really are guilty of the most dispicable, evil, and ignorant idolatry the world has ever known.

Isnt’ THAT worth getting to the heart of? Isn’t it worth searching for yourself? Isn’t that kind of REAL relationship with Jesus worth finding out the TRUTH about?

Isn’t it worth searching for yourself?
Yes :bounce:, my soul already found the truth.

yes but…

Catholicism is such a **BIG **step for me…
at least I feel/intuit that I’m going in the right direction (ie towards CC).

Yay!!! My heart leaps every time I hear or read stories like yours! God bless you on your path towards the church! :hug1:

I wanted to start a thread similar to this! Thank you for doing so!

It is true! There really is no other choice:

Either the Catholic Church is right or she is gravely wrong and we all worship a piece of bread! (Even so, Jesus would still Love us! :))

Again, Protestants really have no other choice; either we are Christians or we are idolatrous heathens. Of course, certain Christians are adamant about Catholics being “non-Christian” and they believe it rightly so. It hurts to hear them say it, but based on their beliefs they can believe no other way!

Divided, Christianity falls!
United, Catholicism stands!

I don’t believe that it is either one or the other. The Scriptures vividly show us and Christ tells us that the bread which comes down from Heaven is his flesh. Scripture depicts far far too much about the Eucharist to merely believe that it can only be symbolic. But we can have these beliefs; these true Biblical truths and not necessarily be Roman Catholic. Many Protestant denominations and the Eastern Orthodox churches share these beliefs as well. You don’t have to be Catholic to believe that the bread and wine become Jesus himeslf.

That is a good point, to an extent. But you don’t have to be Christian to believe in God. You don’t have to be Christian to believe the Bible is true. You don’t have to be Christian to believe it’s the word of God. These things dont’ invalidate the source, they only confirm it. The Catholic church (eastern and western) has taught this from the beginning of Christianity. That doesnt’ make Catholics wrong, it only strengthens the argument that we are the True Church. Because we are the only church to have this established truth from the very beginning, and not something we “discovered” recently.
It is wonderful to accept in the miracle of the eucharist, but why would you reject the church which first taught this truth? You must have a valid priesthood for the sacrament to be valid, and once you break that chain of apostolic succession, the link to the apostles whom Christ gave this authority, you break yourself off from the power of the sacrament.

For those of you who really like great conversion stories I recommend “Surprised By Truth.”

I laughed and cried as I closely related to the converts.

Jesus taught us about the Eucharist. The Bible confirms this. Jesus preached the truth, the Scriptures recorded this. Jesus founded his Church and once again, the Bibles records this. Being, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican etc. is a matter of our opinions and our limited understanding of God’s wisdom and his plan for us. Truths are truth and as long as you believe that, it doesn’t speak to where you go to church, but rather what you believe.

That may be… But Christ also specifically gave us the priesthood:) True, the Bible calls us all to be priests, but not with the same authority. We are all called to preach the truth, but we are not all called to “bind and loose” which was a gift Jesus gave to the apostles.

You may believe in the true presence, but the sacrament is not valid when you disconnect it from the body of Christ, when you separate it from the head of the church, Christ Himself, you loose the power of the sacrament.

that is totally a matter of opinion I’m afraid. Binding and loosing are literally legal terms in the original Greek which would lend themselves mostly to the leadership role of Peter in the Early Christian Church and not to the idea of making it up as you go.

It’s not a matter of person opinion, thats the mistake. Jesus meant what he meant and the Apostles knew what it meant. It’s not up for personal interpretation, nor is the rest of the bible open to it.

Peace be with you!

Time for a hypothetical question! Here goes:

If someone, who had never heard of Jesus Christ or Christianity, found a Bible in the middle of the woods; would bread for them suddenly become the Body of Jesus Christ?

Is it just because they have a Bible that Jesus’ True Presence takes place?

Would they know what to do to make this happen? Would they just have to get bread and say “This is my body”? Would, from the Bible, they have any clue that they were even supposed to do this? Sure Jesus says “Do this in remembrance of me”, but is there really enough detail to tell them EXACTLY what to do?

How would this person know?

Since you say that it is not going to a church that matters, but rather what you believe; I want to ask: What if what you believe says that there is a visible factor in the idea of church? Then wouldn’t going to a specific church matter, based on these beliefs?

Peace

Well, it does for me, but would it not be better for someone who has zero knowledge of God to be in any kind of a Christian church rather than no church for their entire life?

You’re right…it is better to have at least a part of Christ than not to have Him at all:) But for Catholics, it is about choosing ALL of Christ, and not just the parts we are "willing to accep"t, or the parts we personally understand.

I think you missed my point.

My point was that the Bible is insufficient (BY ITSELF) to bring about the fact that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. By simply reading it in the Bible does not suddenly make it true for the reader.

One cannot just start up a church and profess this to be true simply because they read it in the Bible.

As Ashley is pointing out, there is something deeper, deeper into history, a little thing called “Apostolic Succession”!
