Why not read the pertinent source docs from the Old Testament?

“The times of the kings,” from Saul to the Babylonian exile, is a long period, about 450 years. If you just want a brief overview of the whole period, I would suggest the second half of this book, from Chapter 12, The Transition to Kingship, up to Chapter 17, Exile and Restoration. Those six chapters add up to a little over 100 pages.
