Issue of Vatican wealth

I’m sure this question has been asked a thousand times but its one non catholics have asked a number of times.
They constantly say that the Pope, or the Catholics, or the Vatican have vast amounts of money that is not used to help the poor and that we should spend this money to help others rather than ‘acting pious’ as this hypocritical.
I trust this is not true but would like to have an answer that would be a good and truthful response and would also give me peace of mind.
