I think you may have nailed why I have such a strong reaction to this particular hymn.
It reminds me of the political code/speak that many politicians use today.
They don’t want to say what they are really talking about because they know it would get them run out of office. So they speak in general terms and let us assume one thing when they are really speaking something else entirely.
Perhaps I have enough to approach the priest and get something done about this.
He isn’t the most conservative priest I have known, in fact he is fairly liberal.
But he does have a rather strong reaction when the basic church teachings are toyed with.

think ecumenism. ecumenism has given us lots of these things. everywhere in the CC, i hear only protestant songs. it is out of harmony with the Mass and people cannot see it.

Methinks it must be a slow day at the office or at home.
Now I accept and respect than many folks like more traditional hymns, in fact, I prefer them myself.
However, to nitpick down to each and every last word in a hymn seem to me like…well…not understanding that a song is not a theolgical discourse. Sure, some songs have lyrics that are suggestive of doctrine or dogma that is contrary to Catholic teaching, and I have no problem not singing those.
And there is legitimate room for disagreement on what constitutes correct or incorrect lyrics when it comes to synergy with Catholic teaching.
But…please. “STOP MARTY HAUGEN!” is a bit juvenile, don’t you think? What do you care if he writes what he writes? If you think his hymns are inappropriate for mass, methinks a more appropriate response would be “STOP THE PRIESTS AND BISHOPS THAT ALLOW SUCH HYMNS DURING MASS”.
Marty Haugen does not have the authority to have his work used in a Catholic mass.
Whenever there is some change made within the church there is a period of time where there is confusion concerning the change and what exactly it means for us.
since VII, it would appear a great many are exploiting this confusion to their own ends.
IE “the spirit of VII”

*Gather Us In *is one that I’m thoroughly sick of. The choir sings it so often for the processional that you’d think they didn’t know any real hymns.
Just about the only place I can hear real hymns is at home. Getting through the choirs’ selections each Sunday without wincing or grimacing has become a form of penance for me. Although every once in a while they startle me with something truly weird.
Are you talking about the changes actually set forth in the documentation of VII, or are you talking about the abuses under the guise of the ‘spirit of VII’?
I have little doubt a great many changes to the Mass were properly set forth and documented.
But I also believe that the occasion has been utilized by many to abuse the Mass.

We have them for contemporary mass. Thankfully, it’s only once a month at 11:30. The congregation is forewarned. The ones who attend contemporary mass love it. I just feel sorry for our choir director having to go through this. He does it with a smile.
I think contemporary band will go away with the new norms for music that are in the works.

If I’m not mistaken these “new norms” are just that the Mass parts are being re-translated and need new settings.
