Just to stirr up controversy…
No, seriously.
I agree with ALL the criticisms of the NAB. I read KJV, RSV, Douay, but have made an effort to force myself to read the NAB because of its place as the Bible for mass readings and its use in many of the texts I use as a catechist.
That being said, I will mention one of the few good points I have noticed.
Of all the translations I use, I believe the NAB is strongest on either translating literally or at least pointing out in footnotes many of the “I AM” statements of Our Lord in the Gospel of John.
The NAB is the only one I can think of that gives the reader the literal “I AM” as Jesus’ response in the garden when the soldiers say they seek Jesus of Nazareth. Further, the NAB points out that other less-known examples (such as John 6:20) are also “I AM” references.
These things don’t redeem the NAB. I just figured I might share one of the few good qualities I have seen since using it.
