I think marineboy is awesome–GREAT RESPONSES ON THE DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO APOLOGETICS
Perhaps, tpillip, MarineBoy had better learn what Scripture says about his approach. You would do well not to be too impressed with those who sling mud:

1 Peter 3:15-16

" . . .Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame."

Didn’t Jesus also tell us NOT to point out the splinter in our neighbor’s eye until we pull the beam out of our own??

Pointing out the faults and foibles of Protestantism is one thing, but to spew out arrogant venom - especially under the guise of “Faithful Catholicism” - is quite another!

Here are some “CAPS” for ya:

TONE IT DOWN . . . . .

"Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ." - St. Jerome

I have a friend here who was a Catholic since infancy. (Baptized in the Church.) She was raised in the Church, and was excommunicated 29 years ago. (She was formally excommunicated. She showed me her letter. She’s very proud of it.) She is now an evangelical Protestant, and constantly spews venom and hatred about the Church. She goes out of her way to convert Catholics to her sect. Is she considered by the Church to be a heretic or an apostate? Also, if she ever repented, could she re-enter the Church? (Not that I could convince her. She won’t speak to me now that I’m in RCIA.)

I think she would be regarded as both. I’m sorry about your friend. Pray for her, as will I. God bless you in your RCIA!

Thank you! 🙂 I’ll keep praying for her. Her heart is hard. I’ll pray that she lets G-d in to soften it.

Hey Elvsan read Luke 11:37 and look at Jesus’ example–here is clear example of the hard approach------Marineboy and me are simply saying th tat times you need to lay it on the line and “KICK SOME A$$” – JESUS DID THIS SOMETMES (NOT ALL THE TIME BUT SOMETIMES) AT TIME ITS APPROPRIATE-remember we are soldiers in a war–SOLDIERS FOR CHRIST!!!

Gosh, you and Marineboy DO seem to have some things in common…like your typing. We are not called, anywhere, to **“KICK SOME A$$” **We’re called, as Elvisman pointed out to, *" . . .Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, *but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame." It would never be appropriate to attempt to evangelize in the manner you are suggesting, if you’re talking about interactions with non-Catholics or non-Christians. I’m not sure it’s even appropriate with heretics IN the Catholic Church (though it certainly might be a temptation with Richard McBrien and Joan Chichester). This isn’t the Marines, Marineboy…um, I mean, Tpillip.

The church gladly receives back her prodigal sons and daughters if they are repentant for their sins and seek to be in full communion with the teachings of the church, including seeking confession and reconciliation to the authority of the teachings of the magisterium.

As for your not being able to convince her, I wouldn’t worry about that. Simply be a good example through how you live your life and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you. As St. Francis said, preach the gospel always and if necessary use words.

Thanks, CARose! I’m glad tlo know that excommunication isn’t the absolute end, if she ever is willing to come back.

As far as setting an example, I’ll have to do that from a distance. I’m apostate in her eyes now. She’s treating me like a pagan or a tax collector, as she likes to put it. Sad.

I have to believe that in some way, she notices what’s going on with you, and if you live your life according to the example set by Christ, you’ll be doing his work towards helping her reconcile with the Church. But don’t push the issue in any way shape or form. If she becomes curious, gladly answer with the reason for the joy in your heart.

Thank you, I will, and I’ll keep praying for her too. Funny, she thought it was perfectly ok when I was practicing Judaism. She doesn’t even realize that she’s the apostate. She needs prayer.

Of course. Her name is Cheryl. Please do pray. If G-d can reach me, He can certainly reach her! Her heart is so hard right now. I would rejoice to see her return home! 🙂

well tom–i have said this before–its A prudential decision–sometimes it may be appropiate to let someone know the arE in grave danger of going to hell–aNd sometimes it may not be—is IT detrimental?–sometimes, but maybe not at other times—maybe at times it may “wake someone up” YoUR RIGHT ITS NOT tHEIR FAULT THAT THEY WERE BORN INTO THEIR FAITH–BUT CHIEF HOW DO YOU KNOW ITS NOT THEIR FAULT THAT THEY STAY THERE?? IT MAY VERY WELL BE!!–AND IF YOU DONT WARN THEM GOD MAY HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE BUDDY–HE MAY SPIT YOU OUT OF HIS MOUTH—
  1. don’t shout.
  2. learn to use a little charity; enthusiasm is fine, but not when it leads to judgementalism.
  3. remember there is a tremendous amount of truth in the saying, that there are more flies drawn to honey than to vinegar.

WRONG, tpillip!

Let’s not forget WHO Jesus is - He is God. When he told the Pharisees that they would fare a lot worse than others on Judgement Day, He was speaking from that authority.

Who gave you and MarineBoy the authority to condemn others to hell? We are to spread the Good News and pray for our separated brethren. NOT ONCE did our Lord tell us to “kick some A$$” - nor did He imply it.

What He DID say, was that of the faith hope and love (charity) were to practice – LOVE was the greatest of the three. Doesn’t sound like you or MarineBoy understands that. Boasting about how he “utterly defeated” a “heretic” doesn’t make MarineBoy sound charitable. It’s a boastful and prideful statement. We are warned by St. Paul not to boast in anything, lest we become prideful. Boast, instead of your imperfectness and reliance on God.

Remember, we will be judged by the same measuring stick we use to judge others.

Remember this, my friend:
**“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ” – **St. Jerome

well, genius, i obvioulsy didnt mean that Jesus said those exact words–“kick some A$$”–but if you read Luke 11:–are you telling me Jesus didnt use the “hard approach” and “kick some A$$” in that passage when dealing with the Pharisees, Saduccees and Lawyers?? Well i do --I have also readily admitted that you can use your judgment over which approach to take----sometimes the “softer approach” is appropriate and sometimes the more direct “harder approach” is----U HAVE TO USE YOUR JUDGMENT ITS A PRUDENTIAL DECISION—BUT YOU SEEM IKE THE TYPE THAT MINCES WORDS AND DOESNT WANT TO OFFEND ANYONE–YA YA YOU’LL TALK THE TALK AND SAY YOU WILL “CALL PEOPLE ON THE TABLE” BUT WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT DO YOU REALLY LET SOMEONE KNOW THEIR SOUL MAY BE IN GREAT DANGER??? HEY DONT BE LUKE WARM BUDDY CAUSE JESUS WILL SPIT YOU OUT OF HIS MOUTH ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT!!!

Extremely well put. There’s no such thing as a Shi’ite Catholic.
