I’m looking for a little help. I will be giving a short reflection on Good Friday at our Parish. Several of us will lead reflections on the 7 last words of Christ. My reflection will be on “It is finished”. I was hoping to get some validation for something I believed to have read more than once, but cannot locate a source for.
  • I am under the impression that Christ’s final act of sipping wine was analogous to the ritual of sipping wine at the conclusion of the Passover meal (Sader?) Can anyone verify this?
Also, if you have any other thoughts of good points to reflect upon, Im interested!

You probably already knew this but Christ’s words “It is finished,” refer not only to his earthly messianic mission but the specter of sin and death. His words “It is finished” meant death and the oppression of sin were defeated once and for all.
 
Some translations have it as “It is consummated.” This refers to the marriage of God and Man with Christ as the Bridegroom Messiah. The Last Supper was the marriage feast (in addition to passover implications), and Christ’s death was the consummation.

Dr. Brant Pitre has a wonderful 2 set CD called “The Temptations of Christ and the Fall of Adam.” The 2nd CD in this set covers this in detail, and is an awesome presentation. I highly recommend it.

John alone nentions the hyssop plant used to give Jesus the wine.
It was hyssop that was used to sprinkle the saving blood of Passover lamb in exodus12:22
John evokes the Old Testament symbolism to show that the blood of Jesus established the New Covenant,
Crucified at the time the pascel lambs were being slaughtered in the temple, the dying Jesus is shown to be the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”

Jesus’ last words , “It is finished”, are very different from the agonizing cries of Jesus in Mark and Mathew. These words symbolize the triumphant completion as Jesus accepts his death as the fulfillment of the Father’s plan.
As he dies,Jesus hands over the spirit and begins the new life of the Christian community.

That’s what I have always thought to be.

Not so fast…

Rm 4:24-25
It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.

Jesus died because of our sins and raised for our justification. Our salvation was not yet completed when Jesus died but when he raised from the dead.
