It is sinful to enjoy certain TV shows?

Fine. I’ll never watch another sitcom again in my life because it may contain a reference to sex and God wouldn’t approve of this.

On that thought, I’ll never go to the beach again because I may see a woman in a sinful bikini and God wouldn’t apporve of this.

Taking it a step further, I’ll forget about politics and never watch Fox News again because the anchors are pretty and may cause an impure thought and God wouldn’t approve of this.

On that note, I’ll never watch sports again because I may root against the other team and God wouldn’t approve of this.

Next, I’ll never leave my house again because going out into the world is going to lead me to a sinful, dark, amoral place–so I’ll just be scared to death of everything in the world.

The best thing to do is to go up in my room, sit in a corner, and wait for death.

That’s a good Catholic life, I guess?
You’re being unreasonable. I watch Sienfeld, Friends, CSI Miami, Raymond, etc. No one is saying to not watch T.V.; just to be responsible for your own consciousness.

Don’t turn this into something negative when this is meant to be helpful.

What’s wrong with sex? Sex is a big part of life, so is humor, there’s nothing wrong with humor about sex.

Then I don’t know where you are coming from, Serap! You just said that we shouldn’t watch shows because Jesus wouldn’t watch them. Now you’re saying it’s OK and you watch them too. What are you trying to say??

I’m not trying to make this thread negative. The condemners who are saying we are hell-bound sinners if we watch TV took care of that.

As for Jesus, wasn’t He the one who told everybody to put down their stones when everybody wanted to kill the adulterer? Wasn’t He the one who dined with prostitutes and thieves? It was the pharisees who condemned everything in the world, not Christ.

Seems to me we have more pharisees here than Christians.

Really? Yes Jesus dined with sinners and saved the adulterer from being stoned to death… but he was doing it out of love!!! He made it very clear that we are to love the sinner not the sin. I am shocked at that this is being compared to Jesus showing love. Jesus never said it was okay for someone to sin, nor did he find it entertaining to watch them do it. Can anyone picture Jesus laughing at an off colored joke about sex? He’d love the person who sinned- but he would have never been entertained by watching the sin.

vz, Maybe TV has a direct effect on your heart, but to me TV is just that–TV. I have the ability to separate TV from reality.
The stories depicted may be fiction, but the language and images you allow into your home is reality.
And this reality has an effect.

If it did not, you would not remember the episodes.

And the next day, and the day after…you remember the language and the images. And your thought process is altered accordingly.

The question is whether or not you are more likely to sin after these changes (that you allowed) are made. All to often, the answer is yes.

I believe I mentioned this earlier, with the first joke about a sin, the sin feels less grievous.

You know in your heart what God wants of you. I myself have not passed judgement on anyone in this thread. I didn’t say that we shouldn’t watch shows that Jesus wouldn’t watch…I said to ask yourself if Jesus would watch it with you or not. Look into your own conscience; not mine or anyone else’s. Look at yourself and what you feel is ok and be honest with yourself. Different people have different weaknesses. We are all unique.

If I see a sexually explicit scene on T.V. or realize that an episode is too sexually charged, I just find another show to watch. Not all Seinfeld episodes are sexually charged and it was mentioned earlier by other posters. Sometimes, CSI Miami will show a scene that is very sexual and I will just look away until the scene is over.

This is an appeal to extreme argument, and shows that you have not read the arguments presented in these posts.

I must be the odd one out because I rarely remember TV episodes unless they are REALLY classic-like the Cosby Show dance episode or some of the episodes of the X Files, Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica that I felt were particularly well done. I can watch reruns of a lot of shows and still enjoy them because I forgot them so effectively! 😃

Alright–this has gone far enough…I feel as though I need to lay down a line here.

Let me first say that I consider myself a good Christian.

I am a 20 year old college student. I live with my parents. We go to church every Saturday evening. In two years of college I have never missed a day of school. I maintain a 3.8 GPA.

I enjoy a few beers from time to time. I do not ever go out drinking. When I drink, I am under my parents roof. I do not get so sloshed that I lose my senses, but I may watch a ballgame with my father and feel a buzz.

I watch network television shows. Everybody Loves Raymond, Frasier, Seinfeld, and yes, even Two and a Half Men. I watch these shows for entertainment and humor. I do not watch these shows for role models or as a guide on how to live my life.

I have masturbated in the past and still do occasionally. I try to resist temptation but I do fall occasionally. While I do think that masturbation should be avoided as best you can, I do not consider myself a hell-bound sinner for gratifying myself once and a while. Again, I do not seek it out–but self-gratification is HUMAN NATURE which we all succumb to from time to time.

I sometimes go out with my buds and have a good time (perfectly sober, I might add). We sometimes flirt with girls and hang out with them. We even kiss a few girls from time to time. No, we are not out looking for wives, which is what some puritanicals here say is the only time to go out dating. We are out having fun and I don’t think that is wrong.

That is my story. As I said before, I consider myself a good Christian. I also try to be a good student, good son, good grandson, and good person. I am sure that some of you, maybe most of you, believe that I am a sinner and will probably go to hell if I were to die right now, but frankly I do not care. I am secure enough in my faith to believe that God knows that I have a good heart. I love Jesus and sincerely believe He loves me.

So maybe we should all kind of cool our jets with speaking of how immoral television shows are. Think about it–do you think Jesus is going to judge on what is in our hearts or what kind of shows we watch?
I don’t know if I can lend any voice of sanity to this discussion, but let me give it a try.

We have a responsibility to avoid all occasions of sin, I think those ‘occasions’ are different for everyone. For some people, watching some TV shows or movies that contain sex or sexual innuendo causes them to dwell on impure thoughts, leading to the occasion of sin. Others can watch the same shows and it does not have any affect on them. So if these type of shows causes you to lust, masturbate, etc, then you should avoid them.

Masturbation is a sin, even if you don’t think it is. You are achieving sexual gratification simply for the gratification. Sex was given to us as the ultimate expression of commitment and devotion between a husband and wife and for the sole purpose of procreation and not self gratification.

Going out with your friends is certainly not problematic in and of itself, however, again you have a responsibility to govern your actions. Flirting, again, in and of itself is not problematic, it is one way that opposite sexes attract one another. Ultimately you are looking for a partner for life, if you are not, then you have no business flirting and kissing the girls. That said, once again, you have to keep everything within context. Are your ‘kisses’ simply ways of expressing a friendship? If yes, then probably harmless. The long and the short of it is yes, you do have to think about your actions constantly. That does not mean you should lock yourself away from the world to avoid any possible occasions of sin.

I think that you are indeed a good Christian, a good son, good student, etc. You are simply growing up, something we all have to do and in that process there is a lot to sort out, things that seem quite harmless to you may not be as harmless as you think. Only God knows what is truly in your heart and if you continue to strive to do what is right, then you will. At the end of each day, you should take just a little time to examine your conscience and discern whether all of your choices and actions of the day have been truly Christian. If not, say and act of contrition and strive to do better the next day. We are all sinners and but for the Grace of God, would go to hell. That is why we rely on His Mercy, but that does not give us a free pass to do whatever we please and then just say I am sorry later, but then continue in a sinful lifestyle.

There was a time in my life that I watched a lot of TV shows and movies that thinking back on some of them now, I am horrified at how desensitized I had become. As my faith and prayer life have grown over the years, I have come to understand much more. If I am watching something now and the thought occurs to me that maybe this isn’t what I really need to be watching/doing, or I find the content to be offensive, then I simply turn it off or go do something else.

There is a very fine line between good and evil, we all walk it every day. Try to increase your prayer life, think about what you are doing, have fun, but be cautious. If something in the back of your mind says this doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t! Remove yourself from the situation. Don’t be discouraged, just that fact that you come to this forum and ask questions and debate indicates that you truly do want to do the ‘right’ things and lead a good and holy life.

No doubt there are some Pharisees on this forum. But if you are rationalizing your own behavior, Mike, Jesus had no tolerance for that – neither should sinners.

Jesus told the woman caught in adultery, “Go, and sin no more.” He didn’t say that sin was normal and understandable. He didn’t say that adultery wasn’t sin. He met her and changed her.

I listen to sports radio, and sometimes they are quite vulgar. If I find this interesting and remain listening, which I often do, I am sinning. It distorts my thinking.

When we meet Jesus, we change. If we don’t change, we haven’t fully received Jesus into our hearts yet. This is straight out of Scripture. If someone would like to leave the Catholic church because this is a hard teaching, good for them. I want sinners in my church, but I don’t want people who justify their own sins. The remnant will be faithful.

(Note: I’m not criticizing watching TV; I’m criticizing your implication that some sin is OK – or that, for instance, lusting after a woman isn’t sin. Sin is somewhat subjective – what’s occasion to sin for one person sometimes isn’t sin for another. But don’t give fuel for other people to rationalize their own behavior).

I think that Jesus would have watched TV if it were around back then. At least, when he was hanging around others (you know, people like the tax collectors and prostitutes). Obviously he wouldn’t be laying about for hours on end watching a Friends marathon.

TV is one of those morally neutral things that can lead to sin if you are not careful, much like alcohol.

I personally watch little TV, and very rarely do I turn the TV on myself; if I watch it, it’s because someone else is watching it, and even then I usually just sit there for about 5-10 minutes before I don’t feel like watching anymore. And most TV that I watch on the Internet (legally) is anime, which I’m kind of (but not really) surprised no one has brought up yet, and even that is fairly limited and I don’t even watch it every day.

I don’t see how I could be sinning by watching particular shows if I don’t watch them religiously, for lack of a better word.

Sarah - Thank you for the rational response. Something I don’t see much of around here.

Prodigal - I was not trying to justify my sin. I only siad that NONE OF US ARE PERFECT. I put emphasis on this because it seems like people around here can’t get this through their heads. Jesus loves us even when we sin. And I have news for you–everybody on this forum has masturbated. Even you have, Prodigal Son. It’s something that humans do. We are called to TRY to resist the temptation, but we are going to fall on this–ESPECIALLY if we are not married and have no other form of sexual release. So please don’t castigate me in the future, and don’t accuse me of being presumptuous. You condemn the pharisees and then do exactly what they do. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

My apologies if I offended you, Mike.

I most certainly have masturbated, and I know I am a sinner. It is not something that everyone has to do by virtue of being human, but it is extraordinarily hard thing to resist in our cultural climate.

And, just in case you were wondering, I wasn’t stoning you (nor did I ever say that you *were *rationalizing. It just seemed likely). Stoning means killing a person, not asking them to consider what they’re saying. Jesus didn’t say that we shouldn’t point out to one another their sins, only that we should clear out the mote in our eye first.

God wouldn’t give us commands if we couldn’t obey them.

We got rid of our TV set. Life is better without it. I couldn’t stand all the sex on TV. It rots your brain.

Dear sellaman,

How refreshing it is to hear of a Catholic who has discarded their TV set. There is so much questionable and morally offensive material being broadcasted today, here in the U.K. it is no better.

I sometimes rue the day that I got a TV set because it is both mind mind polluting and time consuming, with some very rare exceptions. You have done the wise thing and your life will be enriched without it, as you are finding already.

Perhaps in the light of modern TV we should all pray the Psalmists prayer “Turn my eyes away from beholding vanity”.

Warmest good wishes

You’re going to hell
I have followed this thread with great interest.
As you will see I am currently Protestant, thinking very seriously about becomimg Catholic.

If this is typical of the reaction I can expect, maybe I should reconsider.

Who are you to pass judgement on who is going to hell?

Shame on you

Please do not let an uncharitable comment by one individual dissuade you from entering the Church. In fact, don’t let 70 times 7 uncharitable comments dissuade you - to use a little Biblical allusion. 😉

The lack of the sense of the spiritual is inherent in the technological and atheistic world view and is prevalent in the entertainment media. Pope St.Pius X has explained the errors of this world view and instead of “Two and a half Men”, a reading of the encyclicals which are the teaching of the Church should be done.

We will have to make an account for the wasted time we spend as well as the good we have failed to do. Leisure, as the basis for culture, also a title of a book by Josef Peiper, is based on the divine to whom we owe our existence. Selfishness bases it on pleasure alone devoid of the good to be sought, and the devil is there to convince us this is the opposite of what it really is, convincing us we are really “good Christians”. The Go Go Go and Do Do Do world is antithetical to “Be still and see that I am God;” Ps 45:11 Douay-Rheims.

As we make ourselves into what we are by our actions, liars, fornicators, etc, or temperate, trustworthy, generous, et al. then selling our time to that which is not God is ultimately making ourselves no better than before, lukewarm, to be vomited out of Jesus’ mouth on Judgment Day. Apocalypse 3:16 D-R

Don’t reconsider! That stupid remark is certainly NOT the type of reaction you can expect! I can’t imagine being anything but Catholic. Keep investigating the faith, find a good local parish and start there, if you haven’t already! Good luck to you!
