I am not sure if colleges have ever figured out how to balance out the critical thinking benefits of a great books curriculum with the practical skills necessary to thrive in today’s marketplace. The traditional works in literature, philosophy, etc are wonderful and they open up students to looking at the world in a unique way. Yet I know some people who are extremely skilled in analyzing Shakespeare and yet cannot balance their checkbooks. On the other hand, I know finance students who know how to buy and sell stocks, yet their critical thinking skills outside of finance stink.
