Jesus said “It is finished” or “It is accomplished”

Exactly what is the “IT”

What was Jesus referring to?

Let’s rumble.

From Strong’s Concordance:
G5055
τελέω
teleō
tel-eh’-o
From G5056; to end, that is, complete, execute, conclude, discharge (a debt): - accomplish, make an end, expire, fill up, finish, go over, pay, perform.

It could merely mean that his ministry is finished.

It could merely mean that his mission is finished.

It could merely mean that his earthly existence is over.

The author failed to provide some clarifying commentary.

The problem arises that “IT” does not have any supporting scripture to prove what “IT” is.

All we have is conjecture, speculation, and personal opinion.

The work He was born to perform. The salvation of the world.
From Albert Barnes’ Commentary:
It is finished - The sufferings and agonies in redeeming man are over. The work long contemplated, long promised, long expected by prophets and saints, is done. The toils in the ministry, the persecutions and mockeries, and the pangs of the garden and the cross, are ended, and man is redeemed.
From John Wesley’s Commentary:
Joh 19:30 - It is finished - My suffering: the purchase of man’s redemption.

Read the article written by Dr. Scott Hann

“The Sacrament of the Eucharist”
So what is the it talking about? He said, ‘It is finished’, and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit, his breath. The it, of course you realize by now, is the Passover sacrifice. …

What if He had died and never raised from the dead?
From the NASB:
1Co 15:12 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
1Co 15:13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised;
1Co 15:14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.
1Co 15:15 Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised.
1Co 15:16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised;
1Co 15:17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
1Co 15:18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
1Co 15:19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
1Co 15:20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.
1Co 15:21 For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.
1Co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
1Co 15:23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming,
1Co 15:24 then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power.

What if He had died and never raised from the dead?
Then we would be in deep kimchi…

1Co 15:17 - “and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.”

The work He was born to perform. The salvation of the world.
I thought that the salvation of the world required Christ’s death on the cross. How could it (His salvidic mission) be finished if He had not yet died ?

Those were His last words. He died after He said “It is finished”.

I’ve read that the words He said were the exact words written on a bill when the bill had been paid off. so His life and ministry, then His suffering and dying paid our bill. The next step was to free us from the curse by breaking the power of death. For that, He had to rise from the dead.

1Co 15:17 - “and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.”
so, it contradicted to what you said:
The work He was born to perform. The salvation of the world.
He was still on the Cross; his work was not completed until He raised from the dead. Therefore, “It is finished” does not refer to the completion of the Salvation.

From the NASB:
right, and that means His Work - the Salvation was not completed until He raised from the dead.

Have you read the article by Dr. Scott Hann on his thought on the “It is completed”?

“It is finished” meant that He had completed His earthly mission. He then died. He was to go from death to life after that.

His “work” was indeed completed. The sequence that followed His death was not chronologically part of His earthly mission. The validity of His resurrection was enabled by what He had accomplished in a human body. It was a continuum that is ultimately ineffable.

It could merely mean that his ministry is finished.

non of those were over since he had yet to rise
