…I just can’t picture Jesus wanting Armani…I don’t know for any trying to impress with worldly goods just don’t sit right.
Review the Book of Exodus and see how much gold, silver and precious woods that Christ Himself commanded for the Ark of Covenant and the tent which housed it.

Why did Christ command Moses to gather so much gold for His Glory? And that was just for a vessel and a priesthood that prefigured the New Covenant and the new priesthood.

Look at what Christ commanded David to gather for the construction of the Temple. Again, great grandure and expense. Why did Christ command that?

Think about the change to the NT…Where the temple is now…How important is the interior
qualities…What to be great , become a servant…He wasn’t to impressed with the outward show of the Pharisees…Do we want the praise of man?

Hadn’t thought of that, though that’s not quite what comes to mind when I think of Mary as “Star of the Sea” – I’m more likely to think of an astral body rather than a marine creature, but I suppose it works.

So did Christ errr when He commanded such grandeur for the Ark and the Temple?

Does an Omnipoten God somehow change His mind on such things?

And did God command the Ark and the Temple to praise Man, or was all of that in praise of God?

We’ll in the NC the veil was torn asunder…The temple now in the heart of those who are in Christ…

And the Risen Christ Himself is arrayed in gold.
I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man,[d] dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.
Rev 1:12

If He Himself dresses now in gold, what is wrong with silk for Him when He is present in the priest?

From the photos, it appears Armani donated at least two sets: one which is definitely green (sea foam green, perhaps?), and one which may be white.

The UK’s * Daily Mail* is calling the vestments white.
From the OP’s link:
[Armani, who has holidayed on Pantelleria for 37 years and owns a luxury retreat there, has created four vestments for the new church, in green, white, red and purple.

Hi there:

As Catholics, we believe the Sacrifice of the Mass is the highest form of prayer and worship we can give to God. There are four ends to be met…adoration, contrition for sin, thanksgiving and petition. We join ourselves to Christ in His offering of Himself to His Father (a re-enactment of the same sacrifice as calvary.) It has nothing to do with the bishop seeking the praise of men (for the beauty of the vestments) but everything to do with offering DUE praise to the Father and utilizing everything at our disposal to give Him glory. We believe our Mass to be solemn and sacred and the greatest gift Jesus gave to mankind. Anything that speaks to this gives testament to the very majesty of God.

Hope this helps you to understand…
“They are tasteful, made from a sober type of silk and give an idea of the **solemnity **of the occasion,”

Thanks everybody for your answers. 🙂
I understand where the Cardinal is coming from now.
I think I was being oversensitive to the fact it was a designer, like my brain was thinking Armani=worldly. Thank you all for clarifying his reason for choosing the vestments. God bless!

Wow, I clicked on the link, expecting to be really pleased (I’m GLAD we’re returning to richer, more beautiful vestments for the honor and glory of God and the dignity of His Priesthood…read about the institution of the Aaronic Priesthood in the OT and the vestments of Aaron…I’m sick to death of polyester ponchos!). I don’t think this chasuble is beautiful at all, not nearly as beautiful as some of the newer ones that Pope Benedict has worn early in his pontificate (wish I could pull up some pictures), which seemed to blend both the traditional and the contemporary quite well. These look bland, IMHOP, not much better than the polyester stuff put out by Almy (and Almy has some traditional silks that are far better than this one). Plus, Armani’s chasuble isn’t “green,” really, isn’t it more of a sherbert color. I don’t care for it.

From the linked article:

IMO, the robes are very beautiful, and if it was a gift from Armani, then no one should really criticize… it’s not like the Bishop used money that could have gone to the poor to purchase designer attire.

However, I think it sounds a little tacky to “ask” for a gift…from anyone, not just Armani.
There is nothing wrong with holding nothing back when giving glory to God. Even if the Bishop had bought the vestments, the poor can glorify God through the vestments, which are a work of art, just as much as the rich can (if not more so). I agree, asking for a gift seems tacky. Perhaps there is a bit of a cultural difference though- some things are considered impolite in some countries but not in others.

There seems to be no story here. When I first saw the headline I thought “oh no, some bishop is getting haughty.” I was expecting some flashy red, form fitting, super bishop kit from Italy but that was not at all how it turned out. It was subdued and tasteful.( I don’t really like the color.) The headline and article could be said to show the hypocrisy of church leaders wearing designer threads but really, in this age, where everything makes news, this is another example of the 24 hour news cycle and something for a click of the mouse.
Somebody will have something to say about it but they’ll be wrong.:twocents:
