I may have posted this before, but it seems appropriate again here. I heard a story in nursing school that was used to illustrate that the “hearing is the last to go” (In other words, treat a patient with respect and watch what you say around them) There was a wealthy older woman who fell into a coma and her family was told that the end was near. They all gathered around her bed in the hospital. They began talking about how they were going to spend their inheritance, except for one granddaughter, who kept talking about how much she loved grandma and would miss her. Didn’t that old lady wake up, and having heard everything that was said, changed her will and left everything to her grandaughter. 😃

The sad thing is that Terri Schildler Schiavo and others like her probably heard every callous and uncaring thing that was said in their presence, especially the pronouncement of their death sentence.

She did. Witness her last words to her lawyer when she tried to say, “I want to live.” I wa-a-a-a-a-a-a…

God have mercy on the judge who refused to take listen to that testimony and change his decision. His hardness of heart is staggering.
