The Hadron Collider uses existing protons traveling near the speed of light, if some existing forces or protons created the ‘God Particle’ then what created these protons originally? God has no beginning, so if you were to search for a true ‘God Particle’ then this particle should also have no beginning.

From what little I understand of this quantum physics stuff, isn’t “God particle” little more than a name? As in, it’s just a name, and has nothing to do with trying to find what makes God, but it’s just called that because the particle is so central to physics being that it is the building block of the universe.

Does anyone know what this particle can be used for? In many different news articles it’s called a “great discovery” and a “huge step” for science, but no one can tell how exactly can we benefit from it.

Will we get some hoverboards thanks to it? Otherwise it doesn’t seem to be such a big deal. Higgs boson’s existence was predicted many decades ago after all.

I’m sorry for being a huge ignorant, I’m just curious what uses does this particle have except for “understanding how the Universe began”.

I am not sure how it can explain the origins of the universe, if other protons have to be used to create the ‘God Particle’ How can this be a first cause?

That’s also what troubles me. I’ve read this phrase about understanding how the Universe began on several sites but no one explained how it is possible. Perhaps someone here is more knowledgable than me about such things and can explain it in “lay terms”.

I really hate that some one coined the phrase “God Particle.” This has absolutely nothing to do with a search for God or a first cause or seeking to disprove God or any other theological concepts that come to mind. I think that the name has unnecessarily caused this search to be more controversial that it needs to be. The Higgs-Boson particle is a particle proposed in theoretical physics some decades ago that may be responsible for giving particles mass. Check out the “Standard model” for more details.

Yes, it’s only a name. A name coined by Leon Lederman and picked up by the media and popular outside the non-scientific community.

The Higgs boson is just the last piece of the theoretical-physics puzzle of the Standard Model. It has done admirably in for the past half a century, and one by one the particles required by it were discovered. All that was left was the Higgs boson, which accounts for some of the mass of some things. And that’s about it.
