It's getting harder to watch television these days

I’m finding there are few and fewer television programs I can watch as a practicing Catholic that don’t go directly against my faith and it’s teachings. My latest dilemma is a show I have been watching for years, Animal Planets ‘Pit Bulls and Parolees’. Since moving the show to New Orleans, the Torres daughters, Tania and Mariah, have become wiccan. They are covered in symbolic wiccan tattoos. Mariah especially does not work very hard to conceal them for the program. For instance, she has a giant tress with and eye as its symbol that covers half of her chest and all of her neck. She has another that looks just plain demonic, with an animal skull and horns with another head rising from that one. Her husband, I think that’s who he is, has a large triangle symbol that I recognize as wiccan. I find myself changing the channel lately as they have become more ‘in your face’ about it. I really like this show and hate to stop watching but I believe our eyes are not meant by God to view such images, even if we ourselves do not hold these beliefs. By watching I would tolerating for the sake of entertainment, an evil. Am I making too much of this?

I’m sure there are lots of us. I fear I will eventually have to give up tv altogether. Thank God for books!

Seventh heaven, I Love Lucy, and Downton Abbey are some clean t.v shows that I liked. Also pretty much any cooking show or something like House Hunters and stuff like that

Several years ago i placed a Bible on the coffee table and sat my TV remote on top of it…i often found i watched TV just because i was in my chair…now when i pick up the remote, seeing the Bible prompts me to ask, “is there anything you really want to see?”…if there is fine. But more often than not there isnt…despite hundreds of channel, so instead i read some scripture.

My old cable provider, Spectrum, offers more “adult” (pornography) channels than children’s channels.

Is it your belief the Church forbids us from looking at non-Catholic symbols?

Do these symbols cause you to consider another religion?

“Reality Show” actors have beliefs that are all over the map. I for one don’t like these sorts of shows anyway, so, I’d advise to watch something better simply because of personal taste!

There are still good shows out there, if you like humor. Last Man Standing is quite good. The Good Place is fantastic (especially if you have any background/familiarity with philosophy)! Really anything that Michael Schur is involved with as creator/producer is really good and not overly offensive (Brooklyn Nine Nine May be his “raciest” series).

It really depends what genres you’re into.

Lovely idea…wish I had a coffee table. No, seriously, very good idea.

I’m in the same boat, and it’s really frustrating. Even the “good” shows still have objectionable content in them. My wife and I watch very few shows anymore. NCIS and Dr. Who are the only two seasonal show we’re keeping up with right now. (Though we’re behind in both because we got rid of cable and are waiting for them to come to Netflix / Prime) We used to watch Suits, but it got to the point that I couldn’t stand it anymore because of how frequently the blaspheme God’s name…

All that said, I’m guilty of liking a few pretty awful shows. (Frikin Archer. I hate ever last character in that show. I hate its morals, I hate how nonchalant it is about really terrible stuff, but I still find it to be unbelievably hilarious…)

I only have Netflix and I end up watching documentaries and cooking shows.

I think the sight of a character’s tattoos in a show called “pitbulls and parolees” seems a little bit petty to be concerned over, but in general, yes, there is a lot of garbage on TV. Even without sorting through what goes against the faith, alot of TV is to be avoided purely for the reason that it’s slowly making everyone stupid.

There’s nothing wrong with watching something that contradicts Catholic teaching provides you’re a mature adult who is able to remember the distinction between tv and reality.

We are in a culture war, for sure.
Even if we do find a program that doesn’t spit on our faith, the commercials can be anti-Christian.

If someone says you’re making a big deal out of nothing, it could be that there’s something that they would not like when it comes to sports, or pets, or music.

When we honor God with how we live our life on a day to day basis, we are enjoying His blessing and love. Let’s continue in His love!

I don’t watch reality types shows. Sports programming, movies, old drama shoes like Law and Order or some old comedies like MASH or Cheers.

I have been watching (the boxed set of) Downton Abbey. I am limiting myself to 2 episodes maximum at a sitting in order to make it last. It is very enjoyable. FYI, they are making a movie!

I am secular so TV shows that reference religions wouldn’t be a concern for me BUT the quality of so many shows is so awful that I, too, struggle to find good shows to watch. I don’t expect a show to always challenge my intelligence or raise my awareness but I don’t want it to make me feel stupid either.

I don’t have problems with bad language or sexual content but it better be there to advance the plot or have some reason other than shock value! What IQ are they reaching for these days?

I’m so glad you are apart of these forums even though, as you put it, you are secular. It is always good to have different perspectives. And, as far as foul content in television programs, it’s the lowest form of entertainment in my opinion! May God Bless you with His grace.
