My brother and his partner invited the family to Boston to celebrate their “Marriage” and I am the only sibling of eight not going. We were all raised Catholic. Now I have learned my mother who is near 80 is attending also. That shocked me as she attends mass almost daily.

I am now officially outcast for not attending. The once daily emails have stopped from all. This mob mentality has shaken my faith and belief.

What should I do?

Personally, I would go to the wedding, but that’s just me. Is your brother having a civil service?

You said it’s looking like the secularists are winning.

What are they winning? A chaotic world in which anything and everything goes?

Regarding the “wedding.” I’m wondering if you’ve explained your objections to your family. Ask them if it would be okay for you to require them to do something their consciences tell them is wrong (that’s what they’re asking you to do, isn’t it?). Ask them that, if they refuse to do this hypothetical wrong thing, it would be okay to shun them and cut them completely off (which, again, is what they’re doing to you).

I am missing why you aren’t going… could you please explain!?

I think you are doing the right thing…if anything you are officially the only one in your family not an outcast of Gods Church. I hate to speak so bluntly but I respect you for taking a stance.

And whats up with TurboEDvo and Fashina86 the Church does not recognize these so called marriages as valid so why should we?

Don’t feel left out. I ignore certain family function all of the time just because of this. So far I haven’t been invited to the ultimate ’ a gay wedding’ but I suspect I will someday and I may be the only one not attending and I am not sorry. Gay weddings are ridicules and I refuse to be a part of the bazaar ordeal.

Yea Whatsup? TurboEDvo and Fashina86? What happened to you when the CAForums went down?

I wouldn’t go either–and remember “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake.”

I’m surprised at your mother attending, but maybe she’s being extremely charitable. You probably wouldn’t know if she’ll be taking him aside and voicing her objections, or if she’s already said she would attend but will never consider it a marriage…who knows what’s transpired between them.

This isn’t a “marriage” and I don’t think any of us have to attend what’s basically a travesty.

Putting myself in his shoes (and I don’t really have to, as some of my family does not practice Catholocism), I would want to at least support my family. Yes, it would bother me that they are not having a licit, Catholic marriage, but I also do not allow my religion to destroy my relationships. I would give them my view on the situation, but still feel that it is simply inappropriate behavior not to attend.

And who said I’m recognizing the marriage as valid? Yes, it is legally binding, but that does not mean they are married in the eyes of God. Unless they are married in a church, I don’t see how they would think so, nor do I see how my attending would in any way lead others to believe that I think they are married under God.

However, it is your choice whether or not to attend. I’m simply telling you why I would. Feel free to disagree. I just don’t see any reason at all to hurt family relationships so long as it isn’t hurting my relationship with God.

Nothing, I agree with almost everything you guys say. But, I don’t see how I would be loving my family if I didn’t attend (of course, I would make my feelings on the issue known, but it is not my choice).

Eamon

Good job for not going! Don’t knuckle under. You know what’s right.

And for the record, I would NOT attend a homosexual marriage.

Well I am going to a wedding on Saturday of a friend who has been living with his partner for about 9 months now. They are having their rehersal tonight and they called over to the house tonight before the practise.

I called him over and told him not to forget that a very vital part of the preparation for their wedding is the Sacrament of Confession. All went very silent indeed. I would love to hear the conversation in the car with his bride to be after they left.

It did not sit well at all. Still it had to be said.

Now that I think about it, I have never been to a wedding that wasn’t at least Christian. Now I really have to think about it. There are plenty of things I wouldn’t go to for my family. Hmmmm. Shoot, now I actually have to think about it.

Eamon

I thought this WAS a gay wedding–OP stated “his partner.” I just assumed it was a gay wedding because of that description, which I usually see in reference to homosexuals.

Did I make the wrong assumption? I would attend if it was at least a man/woman wedding, but not a homosexual one.

Oh, see I thought that we were at least talking male/female. Like I said above, homosexual wedding would be a no.

The trouble with this is mothers attending suggests implicit approval. Will she give a gift also?

So mother ends up being cool and tolerant and the son is ostracized. Bad deal!

I would not go in any event.

Wow! True charity demands fraternal correction not capitulation.

DANG IT! Can we please clarify if we are talking about a homosexual union or simply a civil marriage rather than a Catholic one? That would make life easier, as I think we are all talking about two different things.

Eamon

Ohh… I am sorry and did not read the story correctly. I thought it was a marraige, not a homosexual union. I completely agree that you should not go to the “wedding” because it is immoral and shouldn’t be supported. I am sorry that I miss read it… oops… nothing happened to me since the forums went down… just a little tired.
