Could you explain what exactly Galileo did in an attempt to get the Church to change Holy writings? Did he make a direct attack or challenge to the church or did he just write things that put church teaching in to question? Would you provide a link with your explanation?
I don’t have that material with me now, so I will try to get to this later. I commend the library here at CAF.

The part I remember was about the scriptures indicating that the sun moved, when Galileo had discovered that in fact, it was the earth that moved. If he had let the Church be the Church, and follow his science there would have been no conflict. When he prevailed upon the Church to do what the Church was not allowed to do it created problems.

okay…lots of activity on this thread…firstly, many of you have issues with disagreeing with the Pope, whom you believe Jesus put in power. Jesus put Peter in power, He did not decree who would continue on afterwards. Where did Jesus say that a college of cardinals should elect a Pope?
Do you want to start a new thread on this, or use one that is already open?
someone, a few posts back, asked where the Bible justified challenging corrupt authority. what do you think Jesus did genius?
Jesus did not detract from what God had put (name removed by moderator)lace, He chastized the corrupt people that were not acting with integrity. He Himself practiced the Law perfectly, and all His Apostles had respect for authority. Even Paul who was slapped on orders of the High Priest, affirmed that it was not right to speak evil of the ruler of the people.
even if the Bible didn’t explicitly say it is okay to challenge corruption, common sense tells us its okay…that’s the beauty of Catholicism…we are not only Bible based…we combine the Bible, tradition, and logic (well, most of us on the 3rd one).
If you are Catholic, then you are not Bible based. You may be a poorly educated Catholic who does not know that the Church is based on the Word of God (Jesus) and that the canon was not formed for centuries after He created the Church.

Furthermore, logic is not the main source of knowing what God wants. That would be Divine Revelation. Whenever we think our logic is better, humanity always gets in trouble. Abraham fell prey to Sarah’s “logic” to have a son by her handmaid. Now we still see the sons of Abraham constantly at war with one another.
try telling Martin Luther King Jr. that his challenging corrupt authority is not allowed according to the Bible…
If Luther had challenged in the manner that Dr. King did, with civil disobedience, prayer, and righteous witnessing to the Power of God, we would not have Protestantism today.
also, don’t get overly caught up on words. when I say, “the Church” I am referring to the Roman Catholic Church as an organization administered by imperfect humans, not the pure Church established by Christ…
At least you can see the difference!

Blessed are you, to whom this has been revealed, and may it be revealed to others on this forum as well.
