It's OK to believe in Aliens

“The Church” hasn’t said a word about the subject. A Jesuit astronomer who works at the Vatican Observatory has. Father Funes’ personal opinions or scientific research may or may not be reconcilable with official Church teaching.

We already believe in highly-intelligent non-human creatures that interact with us on a daily basis: angelic beings such as angels and demons. Aliens are hardly much of an issue since we already accept, de fide, the existence of beings far more removed and “implausible”; heck, angels and demons themselves could already be considered “aliens” of a non-material sort. 👍

Peace and God bless!

L’Osservatore Romano just interviewed Fr. Funes, the Vatican astronomer. That’s not an endorsement of his comments; it’s news. This newspaper’s “job” is to report on stuff going on in Vatican City; Fr. Funes’ comments are “stuff going on.”

That newspapers the world over are making this look like “Vatican Says It’s OK to Believe in Aliens” means that they are either ignorant or dishonest. Again, the Church has not said anything about this. A priest who works at the Vatican has, in an interview with a reporter from L’Osservatore Romano.

why would it be a bad thing if the Pope came out and said that he believes there could be other life out there, besides humans…and they are part of God’s universe? I sense that this is a problem for some on here? Help me to understand why, if you feel that way.

I have a Catholic relative…you know, the stereotypical “crazy uncle”…he always told me as I was growing up that aliens are actually satan’s most evil and powerful demons. He said satan gave them the task of finding out how to be as powerful as Jesus. Hence, all the abductions of pregnant women…the devils wanted to incarnate themselves.

 👍 What would we do without crazy uncles?

because it’s freaking weird and just not something that is to be taught or believed by anyone.

My husband and I believe in ‘other life’ and it doesn’t take away from our devoutness as Catholics.

My son asked me an interesting question though…he said…“if there are aliens, did Jesus die for them too? And if so, did He go to their planets?”

Remember when kids asked simple questions…like why is the sky blue?😊

I really don’t feel that way. I’m just letting you guys know that the Church hasn’t made any statement about this issue – let alone taken a position on it – so you can stop putting the words of an individual priest who works at the Vatican Observatory into the mouth of the Church. I’m just trying to clarify things, because I sense that some on here are jumping the gun.

that’s opinion, which we’re all entitled to…but opinion doesn’t make something exist or not exist.:o

There is nothing new in this. I remember back in the Pre-VII “dark ages” the nuns telling us children that, well, there might be people on other worlds and, if so, they would be children of God as well. Whether or not they would be born with Original Sin would be an open question.

I didn’t say the Church…I said the a Vatican newspaper…but, I don’t see what it matters if there is life on another planet or not? The RCC doesn’t deem it sinful to believe in extraterrestrial life.

Wasn’t there an old Star Trek episode where Kirk and crew were tracking what they thought was the Sun visiting each planet and it was actually “The Son” as in Christ? Thought of that when I read WG’s post.

LOL

You know, I don’t remember giving a good reply to my son…😊

There’s nothing written to show that–
Maybe that’s because the Church isn’t in the business of discussing the possibility of alien life and its theological ramifications. It’s sort of a non-issue, because (a) we don’t know; and (b) it isn’t part of Revelation. Yet, this does not disqualify believing in alien life (especially intelligent/rational alien life) from being sinful. Lots of sinful acts are not specifically mentioned by the Church in its teaching; perhaps believing this, like those kinds of sins, is sinful because it is ultimately an extension of some fundamental form of sin. Maybe theologians just haven’t gotten around to showing us how and why it is sinful.

Just some food for thought. I’m not making any declarations here on the issue, in either direction.
