I have a question about old Palm Branches, broken statues and rosaries, and other sacramentals.

First of all, my husband and I live in an apartment, so burying them is out of the question completely. Second, I did not find any place in my parish to give away old palm branches, broken statues, unrepairable rosaries, etc.

I REALLY have this qualmy feeling about burning something that is blessed, or represents some saint or Jesus. It makes me feel kind of sacrilegious and cult-like. 😦

I also heard that if you do burn the sacramental, then you must also bury the ash remains. Again, no can do, we don’t own land.

What should I do, after eight years these palm branches are really starting to add up! I have also collected various broken items from no-longer practicing or deceased Catholics. I just presume they are blessed.

Any suggestions? THANKS! 🙂

Burning is acceptable as an alternative to burying old sacramentals. Nothing special needs to be done with the ashes after burning. The ashes do not have to be buried.

I have burned old palms. We did not just toss them in the evening fire though. We lit a special fire just for that. I would question whether rosary beads or statues would burn though. Perhaps you can bury them at a friends house or on parish property. Check with your priest.

Thanks everyone! 🙂 Do you just throw the ashes in the trash? Like place them in a separate bag and throw them away? :o

This is why I never get a palm on Palm sunday, and I only have three sacramentals that have been blessed. I lose things too easily to have many more of them blessed. At this point in my life, I move too often. I have lived in 7 places in the last 5 years, and have had to pack up and move all of my things somewhere else (sometimes to a place I had been before) at least twice as much. I can’t keep little objects that have been blessed laying around. I can’t count how many unblessed medals (and other small religious objects that are usually blessed- but I never had blessed) I have lost in my moves.

Just scatter the ashes in the bushes off the walking path. Make sure they are cool first, we don’t want to read about you in the arson news.

Once a sacramental’s burnt to ashes, it’s no longer a sacramental. So you can deal with the ashes however you want.

Within reason. 🙂

Similarly to how the Eucharist is no longer the Eucharist when it loses the physical properties of bread and wine (ie invisible fragments of Host or drops of Precious Blood that are diluted beyond the point where they look or taste like wine)

My parish takes them to be burned for use for the next ash wed. Its in the bulletin the date and time to bring them back.

Might want to make a suggestion to your pastor on this one. They need them for ash wed.

Also, there are lots of people that may want your statues!

Maybe we need a section in the forum for free trades or something.

My parish stopped collecting the palms since they had so many ashes left over.

As for the statues, I agree with you that there are probably people who would want them. Maybe you could even give them to Catholic family members and friends as gifts.

Thanks everyone. I will just burn the palms, since our parish doesn’t seem to need them. The other broken items I am just hanging onto for now. I was kind of thinking for the future.

So should I just throw the palm ashes away or sprinkle them on the ground (where no one will walk) OR does it matter?

THANKS everyone for all your thoughtful and informative replies! 🙂

God bless you and Mary keep you! :heaven:

You can sprinkle the palm ashes around and say a prayer asking God to protect your property. I heard from somewhere this was a practice that could be observed with palms
