Diagnosing intriguing cases on the internet, of course
It’s quite rare to see someone so proud of their ignorance.😛
No, but it can closely resemble one especially if you want it to.
Just as murder can closely resemble a natural death especially if you want it to
Should someone support a law or legal action because they lack a law degree? Maybe one shouldn’t have an opinion on women’s medical issues if one is neither a woman or a doctor? Is that what you’re trying to say?
No – I. trying to point out how sophistry is no substute for rational discussion.😛

Pride in ignorance, interesting concept, probably even ‘copyrightable’ (Is that a word, do you know?).

Sorry, I thought that was what we were attempting to have until you started asking personal questions and calling my ‘Catholicness’ into account?

I have also observed in my sojourn on the internet, the tendency of making personal attacks when facts are lacking or logic fails. Disturbing trend don’t you think?

Yes, and if you’ll send me your picture, I’ll insert it in my Illustrated Dictionary.😛

I have asked you to state your qualification for the pronouncements you are so fond of making.
and calling my ‘Catholicness’ into account?
When did I call your ‘Catholicness’ into account?

Just as disturbing as false accusations (e.g., “calling my ‘Catholicness’ into account”) and unsupported fiat statements in areas where the poster has no expertise.

Yes, and if you’ll send me your picture, I’ll insert it in my Illustrated Dictionary.😛

Now, now Vern, shouldn’t that request violate some forum rule? Why do you insist on getting personal while discussing a serious topic?

I have asked you to state your qualification for the pronouncements you are so fond of making.

Pronouncements? I offered my opinion based on unique experiences gained in circumstances that I don’t feel comfortable divulging. You’re perfectly within your rights to reject that opinion as I’m within my rights to voice it without posting my resume.

Isn’t implying that I’m not pro-life calling my faith into account? I consider respect for life a fundamental part of what it is to be Catholic and I don’t believe I’m unique in that respect.

“Unsupported fiat statements”, so counter them rather than focus on my personal attributes.

Incidentally, how do you know what expertise I have or lack? Maybe you should leave the responses to people who do have the expertise in the areas where you believe mine is lacking.
.

Not to my knowledge.

If youi thought the topic was serious, you would be addressing it more seriously – and not making all these pronouncements from the mountain.

Ah, the old, “I know what I know, an’ doan got to show you no steenkin’ expertise” ploy.

How is pointing out that you lack the expertise and experinence to make pronouncements freom the mountain “calling your faith into question?”
“Unsupported fiat statements”, so counter them rather than focus on my personal attributes.
I have done just that – by pointing out that they are unsupported fiat statements and inviting you to refute that by showing us your expertise.
Incidentally, how do you know what expertise I have or lack?
So you do claim to have degrees in law, medicine and psychiatry?
Maybe you should leave the responses to people who do have the expertise in the areas where you believe mine is lacking.
Maybe you should refrain from making unsupported fiat statements and hiding behind “you don’t know what my expertise is.”

So you do claim to have degrees in law, medicine and psychiatry?
Actually, you don’t need separate degrees to practice all three: medicine and psychiatry are covered by a simple medical degree. Then of course, there’s always the internet: the great information superhighway.😉

Circular logic, my friend. Then again, I suppose questioning my expertise is easier than refuting the substance of my assertions.🤷

To pracrtice psychiatry, you must have a redsidency in that field.

You don’t have any expertise to question. The proof is, if you had it, you’d be trumpeting it to the skys.😛

Are you hoping (or fearing) I’ll do that? Vern…oh, Vern…I’m to old and wise to play tricks with.😃

You haven’t got it – and I will continue to point that out whenever you make one of your pronouncements.

“I haven’t got it” : Check that illustrated dictionary of yours: what’s the word again for expounding as fact one’s unproven opinion?

Another sweeping general claim, and nohing to back it up.😃

Send me two pictures – I have another entry you’d be perfect for.😛

Claim? It was a query for you…you know, the kind that ends in a question mark?

And what is it with you and my pictures? If you want to get to know me just say so.

It’s not easy to become a real-life Dr. Frasier Crane. At a minimum, you have to complete four years of college, then four years of medical school and, finally, four years of psychiatry residence training. After all that hard work, you’ll have to put up with being called a “shrink.”

Thanks for the info. Actually you don’t need all of that to get Vern’s goat: all you need is a keyboard, an internet connection and a differing opinion.

This ought to be an argument over morality and conscience and human dignity. Otherwise we’re just niggling back and forth over facts, figures, technicalities, expertise –
and the argument degenerates into a game of snide one-upsmanship.

Yeah, well sometimes discussions are hijacked by personal attacks (which usually means there’s no adequate response to the actual ideas being put forward) at which point you have to decide whether to respond in anger or in jest. I happen to choose the latter.
