Wow, that’s a lot. Well, I read mainly from the NAB. Though not my favorite, it
IS easy to read, and I don’t mind making notes in it. I have the Douay Rheims on my Kindle, so when I was out and about, that was what I read. I love the language, and the fact that it is a very literal translation, so you know that what you are reading is truly what it says. When I got to Paul’s letters, I mostly read from the Ignatious Catholic Study Bible, 'cause I needed help with Paul! (2 Peter 3:16 “There are some things in them that are hard to understand…” It has GREAT notes 'n stuff. And, yes, I read the notes, so it probably took about twice the time it otherwise would have. BUT I think I got more out of it. I’m a sort of an academic type, and have trouble reading for spiritual enrichment. Even when I try to just read it and let it speak to me, I end up with my interlinear translation and the lexicon open, and with other translations to check things against. I can’t seem to help myself. It’s really fascinating.
My favorite parts (I think! It’s really hard to say) are Jonah, Ruth and the Psalms from the OT, and Acts in the new.
And yes, my goal is to read it as many times as God allows while I am here. This was just very meaningfully reinforced for me. We tragically lost a very dear friend to a motorcycle accident last night. It was so sudden. There is nothing makes you focus on life as much as the death of someone you love.
