I am at a stage now where I feel like giving up. Nothing ever seems to go right no matter how hard I try everything turns bad. I am at a realisation that I am a complete failure and everything I touch goes wrong. Things always seem to then go from bad to worse and worse to even more worse. I don’t know where to go from here. I must be like a walking magnetic field full of negativity.

How do you get off of a downward spiral?

Thanks.

Stop trying, Rest, Do something however small that you enjoy. That is how i am coping just now with a move that has gone horribly wrong.

Rest, make sure you eat well and get sleep… go for a walk, play with the dog or whatever relaxes you.

“This too shall pass.”

You take a deep breath and step off.

And realize that I am not in control, God is, and you let Him take you where you need to go.

It is mostly my perception of things that cause me the feelings that you relate. If I “feel” like a failure, it is easy to think that I am. I think it was Thomas Edison who said, when trying to make the lightbulb, I didn’t fail, I found 99 ways NOT to make a lightbulb! 😉

So, cut yourself some slack, now that you are not in control, and try to find some good in every situation. It’s there, sometimes, though, it’s hiding!

Peace be with you on your journey!

Most of my own feelings like the ones you have originate with misplaced values. I’m usually trying to satisfy or please the world in one way or another-and refuse to accept myself, warts and all-and see myself from the start as God does. Pride lurks behind it all. FWIW

My confessor told me the other day that Satan’s big agenda is to get a soul to give into despair.

He’ll tempt you to sin, then convince you that being a good Christian is impossible for you, and you shouldn’t bother. In fact, he’ll feed you excuses on why you shouldn’t believe in Jesus Christ and the Church.

Don’t allow Satan to win.

Turn to prayer and stay faithful to Jesus Christ, who understands our human condition, because he is human as well as God the Son.

Know that God didn’t come to save the perfect, but the fallen.

This life is Temporary, roll with the punches, there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

My confessor told me the other day that Satan’s big agenda is to get a soul to give into despair.
A dear priest who is a hero of mine once said the same thing. To paraphrase him:

“Satan tries to do one of two things: either to get you to despair, or else to get you to take credit for any good that you might possess. Sometimes he tells me, because of all of my sin, ‘you’re nothing but trash. How could God ever love you?’ I tell him, ‘I may be trash, but I’m God’s trash.’ Or sometimes, he’ll tell me how holy I am, and how few people are anything as holy as I. I tell him, ‘I’m a servant of God, just like you are.’ And he leaves me alone until the next time.”

Jim, thanks for reminding me about this. I had completely forgotten.

Nelka-- I’m recovering from a “downward spiral” which has lasted several weeks to maybe a bit longer. I’m not catholic nor do I have any other particular tradition that I follow. I draw from many wells and this sometimes seems to overwhelm me. I also tend to get more melancholy at this time of the year when I get less exercise, fresh air, and see people and interact with them less than at other times of the year.
I’m married but I believe we need more interaction than with one person. This is actually a new thing for me as I don’t like to be around people much-even family. I crave silence yet I find myself avoiding it at all costs.
To make a very long story shorter-I try to get out of the house each day to see some smiling faces. I make an effort to get at least a half hour of fresh air and I have been lessening the rituals that have become more cumbersome over the last year or so. For me less in the area of rituals is more. I have been experiencing a turnaround in my spirituality recently for the better.
May you be filled with loving kindness. May you be well. May you be peaceful and at ease. May you be happy.

I’m so sorry, Nelka. I’ve had a few “meltdowns” over the last several months over a chronic health issue. Most recently, was on New Year’s Day and it was a really bad one.

I do suggest speaking with your pastor. I did and found it to e very helpful Do you think maybe you should also speak to a healthcare professional?

Most importantly, pray Pray always. Even if you find you don’t have the energy to pray, just softly say “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus” over and over again. You will find great strength and comfort in staying close to the Lord. I certainly have. It’s a process and takes time, but we must persevere.

I will say a prayer for you.

I’m in the same position, and have been for over a year. I don’t know what to do, either, as it gets worse and worse and I become more and more isolated.

I have to believe that inexplicable pain and trial has a reason. Even when we don’t know what it is. Even when we may never know what it is. The alternative to believing this is despair, which is unacceptable. So,
  1. Have courage.
  2. Be patient.
  3. Persevere.
And if none of those are possible anymore, just hold on any way you can. You’ll possess a lot more of all three by the time this is over. (They’re the fruits of the last three of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the rosary, by the way…)

I’m also a big believer in a heavy comforter, a soft pillow, and a good cry. Veteran trick: stay partly upright so your sinuses won’t fill up! You’ll be a lot more comfortable.

I’ve prayed for you, that God will send you help and give you hope.

You need to watch “It is a Wonderful Life”. George Bailey had those very same thoughts. This movie was written for you!👍

Mother Angelica was known to say that pain can sometimes be for our purification.

James 1:12 Blessed is the man who endures trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him

Seek Him above all else 🙂

Just know we love you man.

Just think of life as a swing. Sometimes we’re going up. Other times we’re sliding backwards. Still other times we’re falling forwards. But the main thing is we’ll keep moving as long as we keep pumping.

So buddy?

Keep pumping.

Don’t give up yet.

You’ll get there.

Peace.

Get a pet if you don’t have one and can afford it. Animals love you no matter what, and pet owners tend to have better mental health and outlooks than people without pets.

It’s a simplistic answer, but my own cat gave me the will to live in a way few other things have.

I wish I had an answer. Even if something goes right, I know it will either fall apart or benefit someone else, but not me.

I was in a similar situation months ago and while I do go down sometimes it’s not near as bad

You feel the next day is just going to be more you have to deal with and no matter what you do if you’re alive you gonna be struggling

It can make you hopeless
You try to pray but you lose faith in everything but then you become sad that you didn’t pray

The one thing that fixes all these things for me is friends who make you feel loved
Friends that show God’s love for you through them

I found people and before that I was pretty sure I had depression but now I’m where I never thought I’d be

Sure I still hate school, struggles of life, and the thought of being adult
But one thing I can say is that good people and love fixed it for me
Always try to be nice to people no matter what

Make it a code never to put people down because you know what it’s like

Hope this helped friend

Sounds like clinical depression is setting in and may not have anything to do with your religious beliefs. Do not give up on religion!!! You may want to talk with a good psychiatrist.

As someone who suffers from depression, I can relate to everything you just said.

There are few things I would like add…

**1. **You are not a failure. What are and feeling does NOT determine your worth, simply your relative mental state of comfort or discomfort.

**2. **Know that this won’t last and that you won’t always feel this way. There will be better days.

I would recommend speaking to a spiritual director if you have one. I would also consider speaking to a therapist, preferably one that shares your faith.

I woud also consider getting a life coach. They can be helpful in recognizing habits that are counterproductive while putting together an action plan on building good habits and working on small incremental changes. When you are organized and have goals to work towards, you will feel better about yourself.

Don’t give up hope! God is with you.

Pray this with me, from Saint Francis De Sales:

**Do not look forward in fear to the changes in life; rather, look to them with full hope that as they arise, God, Whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in His Arms.

Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same understanding Father Who cares for you today will take care of you then and every day.

He will either shield you from suffering or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.**

I will have you in my prayer intentions this evening. God bless.
