Would you consider seeing a good Christian counsellor? Sometimes when we’re sunk too deep in despair, relying on self will alone will not help. There’s still a lot of hope & joy in this world. Please don’t give up on your life. You’re God’s precious child. Listen to encouraging Christian music, it can help to lift moods. All the best.

i just feel all hope is gone…21 and my life seems like its going nowhere despite my best efforts…it feels like the only thing to live for is to get drunk and high and look at porn…as sad as that seems thats how i feel right now… the world is too shallow.
You are right, the world is too shallow. Consider living in the world, but not “of” the world!

2 Peter 2:20-22
20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overpowered, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 It has happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog turns back to his own vomit, and the sow is washed only to wallow in the mire.

The longer you live for getting drunk, getting high and looking at porn, the farther away you will get from appreciating the world you have so cavalierly tossed off as boring and shallow. It’s easy to point the finger and blame something or someone else when one is disinclined to do the footwork it takes to engage in the life s/he has been given. I can tell you this as someone who spent 20 years behind booze and dope. The word “regret” doesn’t even cover it.

You’re 21. Life is beginning. Put the substances down and get off your duff and explore it. That’s your job.

One more thing: what do you mean by “despite my best efforts”? What has that entailed?

its just no matter how hard i try in school, work, etc… there’s always going to be another mountain to climb…always…i’m just real tired and need a break. its like i have to put forth max effort to just to get ahead just a little in life…i can’t just accept things for the way they are.

right now i’m in a complete transition stage where i’m going into post-grad life and have a lot of questions to answer making me despair.
and again sorry if i come off griping about my situation.

Yep. There’s always going to be another mountain to climb. That is a good thing. Human beings need challenge; we atrophy without it.

That said–if you need a break, can you take one? Can you take a few weeks to rest and recharge (not with pornography), maybe get out into nature for a bit?

You absolutely do come off as griping about your situation, and from the information you’ve given, it appears that most of your problems arise from being young (and a bit foolish). We don’t know if you’re struggling with depression or other mental health issues that might make your situation more serious. It’s good advice to seek out a counselor or pastor to talk to; a bit of perspective might be very helpful, and may assist you in realizing what you need to do next.

If your troubles are economic, I would urge you to seek out whatever support system you can.

If you’re concerned about getting a girlfriend–please don’t be. I mean, if you want to look for a girl, go date, join a web site, etc, that’s fine; but geez, 21 is WAY too young to be in “despair” about finding someone. You still have lots of developing to do! Best of luck.

its just hard to accept everything around me right now…i have a lot of passions like to find a girl and get a job but they seem lightyears away and can only sit here up sh*t creek without a paddle while the world goes by.
I think your situation is not that uncommon, unfortunately. But no, that is not your only choice. It has been mentioned up the thread that battling this kind of despair is much easier when one gives oneself to others. You can also help yourself to get that job by filling your life with experiences that make your life rich with learning and development. Volunteeer, and if possible, join the Peace Corps or Vista so that you can refocus your whole life. As dismal as we feel at times, there is always someone with worse suffering.

It is best not to “find a girl” but to fill your life finding God, and His will for your life. You do this by being around others who are serving Him, study, and prayer. None of us are truly happy until we are walking in the Way that He has created for us. When we seek first the Kingdom, everything else is added to us, jobs, spouses, etc.

It a way it is good that you are not fulfilled by these shallow pre-occupations of the world, because it shows that your soul knows there is something deeper, something more fulfilling for which you are yearning.

If it’s any consolation you’re not alone. My house has put me into a financial mess, I’m working to jobs 70 hours a week and still underwater, I have not help financially, or family support or even close friends. I can only suggest you pray and take it day by day, hour by hour or minute by minute whatever you need to do. Tell youself you can’t lose because if you do there’s no one there to bring you out by yourself. I also remind myself of a line in a book I once read. “No matter how friendless or alone I am I will care about my self and strive harder” it goes something like that. Prayers.

Maybe you are spending too much time thinking about yourself. Try doing something for somebody other than yourself.

One component of a possible solution for you is a complete medical examination. Discuss these problems with your primary care physician and see if s/he has anything to recommend. Diet, exercise, reaching out to help others, prayer/meditation, maybe even medication ~ no one should have to live under this kind of cloud.

Best of luck to you!

I see from your post that you are a Catholic, my advice would be to go to a Church where you feel comfortable and make a good, sincere confession. Then, after your penance, receive Holy Communion and pray for whatever is troubling you then pray for anyone else in your situation. These may seem like mundane things but if you do them with a sincere love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus you WILL notice a change!!

Sometimes we wait around for Jesus to pull us out of the pit of despair. What we don’t realize is that He is already there, reaching out to us desperately. Its just that we are too blinded by the fog of our own sins to see His hand and grab it.

My prayers are with you and may GOD bless you always.

Does the following Gospel passage seem to ring a chord with your situation?
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Sometimes we all need to take a step back from the world which can at times seem very intimidating. What we need is a fresh perspective on our situation. The best way to find this is to make some special time to spend at Church, perhaps on a weekday and if possible in front of the Blessed Sacrament.

It seems to me that you may have lost a sense of feeling in your life. Everything seems to be just about work and trying to get ahead. Don’t worry this happens to most of us at some point in our youth. In fact the earlier you go through it the better and 21 is a very early age for adulthood (in my opinion anyway).

What I would suggest is to find a Church where you feel comfortable, then make a good and sincere Confession, don’t worry too much about the words, Jesus knows what you mean when you say it with your heart. Then after your penance, receive Holy Communion and tell Jesus about all the things troubling you, then pray for others who may be in the same situation. These may seem like mundane things but when done with a sincere heart they WILL make a difference in your life.

It is ultimately our responsibility to steer our lives in the right direction, but it you don’t do this with GOD’s help you might end up steering in one big circle.

My prayers are with you and may GOD Bless you with the courage and insight you need to tackle your problems.
