I have actually done it once before. I was at a youth retreat in London and my friend had been asked to sort some things for the Mass at midnight. He asked someone I was stood talking to if she would do the OT reading and she said no, he asked me and I said yes. Even though I had never done it before. 
I made sure to read the text - Numbers 6:22-27 before Mass. My main worry was when the reading was in the liturgy (and when I should go up). I actually had to go to the back to look at an order of Mass booklet! I was also worried about volume (even though there was a microphone) and the balance between looking up at the congregation and reading/looking at the text. However, afterwards at the New Year’s celebration somebody complimented me on my reading.
So, on account of doing this, I think I will be less nervous when I do it for the first time in my own parish. I have ordered The Lectors Guide to Biblical Pronunciations that margya recommended and thanks for everyone else’s suggestions!
