I recently had a discussion with my mom about In-Vitro Fertilization and my mom brought up two of my relatives who were conceived by IVF. I then told her that what their parents did was morally wrong.

After the discussion, I pondered a thought:

If In-Vitro Fertilization is morally evil (which I totally believe), then why would God grant a child to the couple utilizing it? Doesn’t it seem like God is caving to sinful, human will?

Any insights would be appreciated! Thanks!

We have free will.

^ Yep, and fornication. 40% of children are born out of wedlock here in the U.S. and something like 70% for African Americans.

Human bodies don’t stop working just because someone is sinning. God is a master lemonade maker, turning sinful situations into something good… 😃

God created us through His Love, for His Love. In order to do this, He had to create us in His likeness and image, with a free will. Love must be free, and chosen by the participant. So in creating us with this freedom, included is the freedom to turn from Him in sin. Just at Adam and Eve had the ability to disobey His plan/commandment not to eat of the tree, so we have the choice to misuse the awesome gift of procreation.

Is this “caving”? I think not. It is the ultimate sacrifice of a loving God, to watch us walk away from His gift, and fall into sin by our own free choice.:o

Thanks everyone! 👍 I always appreciate this site’s answers!

my sister in law is doing IVF and her parents are paying for it…they call themselves Catholic. It has REALLY bothered me and upset me. I was so shocked they would do something so wrong and evil just so she could have a biological baby. She is only 31, so what is the rush? She had 2 miscarriages and said they were babies she mourned and she is a mother just like I am…yet, then she went and did IVF and was willing to freeze her “babies”. She claims she is a mother to 3 babies in heaven (2 miscarriages and 1 ectopic pregnancy) yet, when she was implanted with 3 embryos and only one stuck, she does not count the 2 that didnt make it as babies…How can she do this and how can her mother and family enable this thinking and behavior? I just want to scream at them and give them a piece of my mind

Don’t be surprised if you start to change your mind when the child is born.

When God created us, He created us in a particular way. One sperm plus one egg equals one baby [sometimes more].

He crafted this method so that when man and woman come together in the marriage bond, He brings the soul if the conditions are right for conception.

IVF forces God’s hand. It abuses the formulae He built into humanity to procreate our species. When sperm and egg are forced together, God must insert the soul. It’d be like if I chopped off your head, God designed our bodies to require heads and blood. I chop off your head, God is required by the laws of biology to take your soul to judgement.

Its probably why fornication is such a serious sin, because it forces God’s hand and can result in a child. God designed sex for marriage. It is for the good of teh spouses and the best place for the child.

My sister is going through the IVF process, but currently she’s at the AI stage. She gets three more goes with AI and if no pregnancy, then she starts to violate the sancity of human life even further.

If she and her partner succeed and a child is created, its not the child’s fault they were concieved in sinful ways. I was conceived in an act of fornication and placed for adoption. I’m glad for my life. I feel sorry for my biological mother who is far from Christ. I worry for her soul. If she hadn’t of fornicated I wouldn’t exist and i wouldn’t know any better.

Its not the kid’s fault, but its difficult to be tactful in this situation, because well, people have been able to justify evil means to obtain a good. When the good is a cute little baby, it makes us look like a pack of jerks to say that IVF is evil when a pretty little baby happened - it can be seen as saying we didn’t want that child to exist.

Tread carefully.

Change her mind about IVF, and the practice of freezing embryos? Of course, she will love the child, but she doesn’t have to automatically change her mind and agree with a practice where babies were in a state of frozen limbo, not implanted but yet still having a human soul. She doesn’t have to automatically condone that many babies, when unthawed don’t survive the process.

My personal thoughts are that God has had each one of us planned from the beginning. As He is God, He saw all of the choices good and bad that would bring us into existence. He has a plan for each of our lives. I also think that we need to be careful in not giving the credit of our existence to the sin of our conception (example: rape, IVF, fornication). The credit goes to God, who called us out of nothing. Who’s to say that we wouldn’t have existed later down the road? It’s no accident you’re here.

Yes, because the parents of rapists and murderers who love their children suddenly do an about face on how they feel about rape and murder once the conviction comes in…

This^^^^. I just don’t understand how people can fully accept that things like rape and fornication are wrong while still able to love the children that result, but can’t do the same with IVF. Say IVF is sinful, and suddenly you’re condemning the children born from it. Children are innocent and always precious in God’s sight, no matter how they’re conceive, but that doesn’t mean that we can do anything to get them!

If you really want to “double up”, you can use more than one method of NFP. Dh and I did this after the birth of our last child, who was a total surprise (we were being very conservative with the sympto-thermal method). After my cycle returned, we did sympto-thermal, along with following the rules for Creighton (which we had used years before, before switching to sympto-thermal), plus I used ovulation predicter tests (kind of like marquette, but I didn’t buy the monitor, just tested with the sticks every morning).

No method of artificial birth control, even tubals and vasectomies, are 100% effective. I know couples who’ve gotten pregnant using condoms AND being on the pill, or after one of them was sterilized. Couples are especially devastated when they think they’re being “careful” and “responsible” and still get pregnant.

In Christ,
Ellen
