Why does the church frown on IVF? Isn’t the whole purpous of marrige to have kids?

What happens to IVF kids? Will they or their parents got to hell? I’m an IVF kid and in religion at school we’re learning about marrige and IVF and I just feel odd. I feel like he doesn’t think there’s test tube babies in the class.

It’s hard to answer with regard to your specific situation without knowing more details. God loves IVF kids as well as everyone else no matter how conceived.

The reason the Church opposes IVF is that it believes that the conception of children should take place within marriage and within a marital act of procreation. That combines both the unitive purpose (uniting husband and wife) and the procreative purpose (having children) of marriage. It opposes artificial birth control because that separates the procreative from the unitive. It likewise opposes IVF because that separates the unitive from the procreative.

But none of us is responsible for anything with regard to the manner in which we are conceived.

The Church is probably not to impressed with the fact that in IVF multiple embryos are created, screened and those not worthy are killed, and those excess embryos are then frozen or used for research.

If you parents were unaware of church teaching there is no culpability on their part, if they were aware they will just need to avail themselves to the sacrament of confession.

Children are certainly not responsible in anyway for how they were conceived and are loved and cherish regardless of the cirsumstances. Both my husband and I were conceived outside of marriage and we are just as much children of God as those who “did it the right way.”

IVF separates the unitive and procreative aspects of God’s gift to all married couples, sexual intimacy. When things are not done according to God’s laws problems for society follows. Embryo’s are created and destroyed, scandalous things happen -like embryo’s get mixed up and get implanted in the wrong people and things like the very famous “Octomom”. The rules of the Church are out of love from God’s for our own happiness.

But even when human’s falter, which they often do, God can bring beauty and promise from it. God knew you and loved you before he formed you and the circumstances of how you came to be changes none of that.

Children have a right to be born from a loving marital act that happens between their parents in private. Yes, the main purpose of marriage is to have children and the church certainly supports spouses with infertility problems to seek treatments which enable them to have children naturally with conception occurring in the Mother’s body not out of it . Processes like IVF cause the conception of a child to occur outside of the marriage and in a lab. That is not what God intended with marital love. Children are his gift and not a right.

IVF children are still children of God. They are loved by him and have the same place as any one else. You should never ,ever worry about that and ignore anyone that says differently. You were still formed in the palm of God’s hand and your soul belongs to him.
As far as parents who used this method it is hoped that they will feel some sorrow for using it and confess it. They do not have to regret having the children in their lives and are encouraged to love and raise them as if they were conceived in the natural way.

If you have really good reading skills you can read the church documents about this-

It is sometimes difficult to hear church teaching or to teach it when there are people present who may be personally involved. This is the case with you in class. Your teacher may not know that you were conceived this way.The teaching must still be taught because it is the truth even though someone hearing it might be uncomfortable and confused. You can tell him that it was difficult to hear this teaching and ask him to be sensitive to kids in class who are personally involved the way you are . You can print out this thread and give it to him if you like , write him a letter or speak to him.

I’m not your parent but I am proud of you that you are seeking to understand this situation in a way that helps you understand the truth and allows you to be sensitive to people who are personally involved.
