Using IVF is judging God… you’re say, “God, you don’t know what you’re doing by not letting me fertilize naturally. So if you don’t mind, step aside so that I can do what I think is is good for me… 'cause how would you know?”

Don’t play God… only He can do this job.

Another thing… Infertile couples complain about not being able to have children. Children are not things to have - how often do you hear couples say, “I want to be a parent…” Hardly ever.

Having children is a gift & a privilege…

God Bless

I had posted this on the infertility forum but I just want to share my story with you all . I think it does relate to your discussion and also may provide some insight to you of the very intense spiritual struggle which goes with sufferers of infertility.

While the church has a rule in the catechism saying NO to IVF, there are very few support groups or organisations within the church that minister to those who are confronted with this unrelenting rule and find it difficult.

It is not just as simple as " if infertile, Go to Adoption". Whilst adoption is honourable , it entails a difficult and expensive journey too which can span years. Adoption is not everyones calling and I dont think it is helpful to call anyone who suffers with infertility and has the natural desire to be a mother or a father a selfish person simply because they are not called to adoption and struggle with the decision on saying no to IVF.

People with infertility need prayers and support in making their decisions and choices and charity and generosity is needed to pray for those in this situation. Infertility is a struggle and those who struggle with it often find little support within the church.

In truth , the closest to any support group that I have found is the group that has formed in the forums here where there is a lot of posting and discussion going on…

I have not come across any support group in any church organisation in real life and I have even found priests that do not even know what IVF is when spiritual counsel is sought. The subject of infertility is often a taboo subject, not discussed openly and not catered for.

My infertility story and struggle had a happy ending, Please take the time to read my story. It is called Infertility - A Spiritual Journey. It is posted across a number of blogs but the links are all here.

I personally think there is a lot of ego involved with someone who would go to such lengths and expense just to pass on their own genetic material when so many children are rotting in orphanages all over the world. There are babies in Romania who will never be held or snuggled, who are only touched when it is time to feed them or change their diapers, who exhibit self-harming behavior by slamming their heads against the crib and who don’t cry because they know it won’t do any good. If you can afford IVF, you can afford to fly to Romania and adopt one of these poor little ones. So sad 😦
I tend to agree with this POV.

However, the risk of adopting a neglected orpahn is Reactive Attachment Disorder where a child can develop a lack of empathy and there are even cases where these children have attempted to kill their adoptive parents. When RAD is left untreated or the child is over age 3, then this child has a very high risk of becoming a sociopath as an adult.

IMO, it’s a huge risk to your health to adopt a neglected orphan.

So what is the answer??? I wish we could protect these Romanian orphans before they have the chance to develop RAD (develops before age 2). Romanians are getting better by realizing that babies do far better in foster care than orphanages. They now have a mix of children in foster care and children in orphanages.

It’s so sad and I have mixed feelings.

My new neice is 10 days old, absolutely gorgeous and she is an invitro baby. I love her dearly already and I can’t wait to watch her grow into a toddler, pre-schooler, etc.

Even if the exact number of eggs fertilized is the exact number of fertilized eggs implanted, without any waste or freezing, the Church still forbids it. The Church forbids it because it requires the ‘unitive’ property of marriage to be present (in other words, the natural marital embrace has to be present). Even if the husband is the one who actually does the implanting, the Church still forbids it because it’s not ‘natural’. Remember that in order for sex (and conception) to be licit according to Church rules, two properties have to be present 1) unitive and 2) procreative between a married couple. They forbid IVF for the same reason they forbid artificial contraception (because it interferes with the unitive property). Hope that helps…
try explaining this a couple who desperately wants a child. my SIL was depressed for a decade trying to make a baby. she had 3 miscarriages and she was becoming more and more bitter and negative.

try explaining the sin of IVF to woman like her…this is why Catholics are turning to IVF in great numbers.
