Thanks of the links.

Of all his books, which is your favorite?

Me, I like the Silmarillion.

I assume from his writings correct? two towers. But I really enjoyed the collection of his letters, I love his views of the categories i listed in the op. He has helped shape my views on a few subjects.

To your earlier question if i remember correct. I first watched the LOTR movies and loved them so much I than read the books, after i read the books i did not like the movies so much. Everything i did not like about the movies [few things] i found were all added by Jackson. There was so much good stuff that should have been included. However overall for a book to movie conversion i think he did well.

I read the hobbit before i watched the movies. I hate peter jackson after that.I heard the tolkien family took away the rights or opportunity for him to do the sillmarillion because the hobbit was such a disgrace. It could have been maybe the best movie, instead he turned it into 3 abominations lol.

But from reading the books i had to know more about their author, so i started reading his writings, official bio etc and really fell in love with the man. He is one of the first men i hope to meet i heaven one day.

Join him in his Faith. 🙂

It is men like him that make me consider Catholicism. He in part caused me to look more deeply into Catholicism.
👍

I used to be an Evangelical and before that an atheist.

It was because of him, that I went back to the Church. I was baptized in the Catholic Church but was brought up atheist.

I know. It is apparent, my friend. :)Take the step. 🙂

Most people say that CS Lewis (who was JRRT’s friend) died a Catholic, as well.

Take the step. I promise that over the long run, you won’t regret it. Be prepared to be attacked by Sauran (Satan), though. Don’t let that stop you: Jesus Christ has won, through His Church. He will not let you down.

There was an attempt to make a movie about the Fall of Gondolin, one of my favorite stories in the Silmarillion. I think the Tolkien estate put a stop to that.

I suggest you look up the History of Middle Earth series, especially Volume 10.

Volume 10 contains the conversation between Finrod and Andreth.

This conversation contains some theological concepts and the different views of mortality and immortality and how elves and men view their respective fates.

Read it. I cannot recommend it enough.

I have read some on lewis and from him. he was an Anglican but seemed to move towards Catholicisms as he aged but i dont think he ever crossed over :).

I think there are still many questions and what i see as oddities to make that change right at the moment. But it seems i am in the right place for these. Maybe another thread thoe. 😃

My prayers are with you.🙂

Tolkien and Lewis had a sort of falling out when Lewis married a divorcee which Tolkien did not approve.

It seems impossible to talk about or read about Tolkien without Lewis coming up or Lewis without Tolkien coming up, i love that.

Tolkien and Lewis did indeed separate some [never stopped being friends] from their closer earlier relationship. One reason was Lewis was always the single man of the inklings who always complained to the other inklings the wives were getting in the way to much of the group. He said he would not if he had a wife. Than when he did get married he did allow his wife to get in the way and that irritated Tolkien. Also it was in part Lewis brother complained he was spending to much time with Tolkien. Lastly while Lewis moved towards Catholicism he made a joke * about a certain catholic doctrine making fun of them and Tolkien overheard it and it never sat right with him.*

Tolkien himself sold the film & merchandising rights to the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. He had serious concerns about how the books would be adapted; but he wanted to provide financial security for his children, and United Artists had offered him a generous sum.

The Silmarillion was not published during Tolkien’s lifetime. The Tolkien estate (which is run by Christopher Tolkien, the editor of the History of Middle Earth series) could sell the film rights to the Silmarillion, but it’s highly unlikely that will happen while Christopher is alive. He is reputed to have hated Peter Jackson’s films.

Christopher must have been influenced by his father.

Tolkien never considered, drama, whether on stage on in the movies, to be a legitimate art form.

Actually, there is a funny anecdote from the Letters of Tolkien concerning Vatican II. The new Mass changes shock Tolkien and he disliked them. When the changes first occurred he would refuse to say the response “and also with you”. Instead, he would very loudly pronounce the Latin version much to the embarrassment of his kids. 😃
