What biblical reference could I search in order to answer the f. question: How did John recognize Jesus as the messiah? I kno that his disciples asked our Lord "If he was the one to come?’ and also that either he and/or his disciples were already baptizing not too far from where John was doing the same. Jimls

John 1:32-34 says, “And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.” (see also Matt 3:16-17, Mark 1:10-11 and Luke 3:22).
