In theory and historical fact, there have been nuns who were raped and some of them may have concieved children. The Jack Chick issue, and he was real, has the number in the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, and most of those were not raped, but consensual. The former priests and nuns that he cited were never either one, just pretty good at making up tales that Dan Brown would love to have thought up.

If Jack Chick really wanted to do some good, he would spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, not the made up news of Jack Chick.

Chick will have to answer to the Most High, but then again, he may see His face and pass it by…that is hell right there, to die and see the face of Christ just pass you by…gives me goosebumps…😦

Yeah but like I said in another thread, I seriously have to doubt that such cases are as rampant as Jack Chick wants people to believe.

Again, history shows us that Jack Chick is full of it. I would say that a small magazine could hold every story. Jack would have you think that it was rampant.

I have a confession to make. My only purpose for mentioning Jack Chick is to prevent this thread from being moved. Bad idea. 😃

I wanted to know what happens to sexually abused nuns and what the RC does to alleviate the problem. But when I asked this question on the other thread, our friend Lost Wanderer replied as if in complete denial that such a thing happens. Or that if it does, its so small that its negligibly not a problem at all.

Because the whole idea of sexually abused nuns only entered the public thought when Jack Chick concoted his idiotic claims. You can’t blame me for criticizing your question when the first person (Jack Chick) who even mentioned this topic had a tendency to blow things out of proportion.

And as it had been stated before by other people, there are fewer cases of sex abuse scandals in the Catholic Church compared to Protestant denominations and secular establishments.

Sexual abuse is wrong and a travesty. I hold my church to a higher standard and am embarrassed when the abuse or any type of cover up happens. Statistics show that the Catholic Church has a lower abuse rate than others, but it should be 0.

But, it is humans that make these mistakes, it no way takes away from the validity of the truth that the Church teaches.

I think that makes sense. But due to the fact that the RCC covers-up and that catholics are expected to be more loyal to its authorities compared to Protestants to their pastors. Much less in secular establishments.

It also makes sense that the Priesthood attracts gay catholics and that straight people who are forced to abstain from sex while exposed to public service are more prone to sexual temptations.

A predator is a predator.

The priesthood attracts those that are called to it, nonsense for you to say it attracts gay Catholics because they are gay. That statement really shows your bias and lack of understanding of what the faith is all about.

Agnos, can’t just take the answer. You must add “But the CC.”…it gets old after a while.

Not to nitpick, but this is incorrect. Jack Chick did not invent the urban legend of widespread sexual debauchery among Catholic religious. He was merely piggybacking on much older claims. Exhibit A is the 1836 book The Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk: the Hidden Secrets of a Nun’s Life in a Convent Exposed. Here is a link to an old This Rock article about the origins of Maria Monk and a look at the damage these tales have caused.

Priesthood attracts gay catholics? Do you even know that one of the biggest things GLBT activist groups have against us is the fact that we refuse to ordain people like them and take them into our clergy? I guess you might need to update your database on that.

And another thing, even if there was a ‘cover up’ that won’t affect statistics considering that if people really wanna prove that there are more sex abuse cases in the Church, they would’ve quit the Church and would’ve added to the stats by reporting. Why is it that the stats have remained small? Because there’s nothing more to it. There really are fewer cases than any other Christian denomination.

It is illogical to assume that a ‘cover-up’ would affect stats because since people nowadays are so adamant and so passionate about shoving this stupid scandal in our faces, there is no way anybody who had been allegedly been abused by a priest would miss an opportunity to report it to someone who was recording the percentage of sex abuse regardless of any ‘threat of excommunication’ (which I think is stupid anyway considering that this ‘scandal’ had made people lose their belief in the Church’s truth).

Okay I’ll retract that little bit of misinformation but still, you can’t deny that Jack Chick had a big hand in spreading that stuff around.

Sadly, this is something very true and was all over the news some time ago. And the Vatican even admitted it was a serious problem/issue. Here are some links:

"B. extremely concerned about the substance of a report which appeared in the American periodical the National Catholic Reporter, according to which a large number of Catholic nuns have been raped by priests in at least 23 countries,

C. whereas the Holy See has confirmed that it was aware of cases of rape and sexual abuse of women, including nuns, by Catholic priests, notably because, since 1994, at least five reports on this subject have been submitted to the Vatican,

D. whereas, although the officials responsible were well informed about these human rights violations, they did not take any proper action in response,

E. whereas according to these reports several of the nuns who had been raped were also compelled to have abortions or to resign, or in some cases were contaminated with HIV/AIDS,

F. whereas according to the spokesman for the Vatican, Joaquín Navarro Valls, the Vatican is aware of the problem but it is geographically limited and whereas, on the contrary, this phenomenon is not confined to Africa,

G. whereas sexual abuse is a crime against the human person and whereas those who have committed these crimes must be brought to justice,
  1. Condemns all violations of women’s rights and acts of sexual violence, particularly against Catholic nuns; expresses its solidarity with the victims;
  2. Calls for those responsible for these crimes to be arrested and brought to justice; calls on the judicial authorities of the 23 countries cited in the reports to ensure that all appropriate judicial action is taken to establish the truth about these cases of violence against women;
  3. Calls on the Holy See to take all allegations of sexual abuse within its organisations seriously, to cooperate with the judicial authorities and to remove the perpetrators from office;
  4. Calls on the Holy See to reinstate those female officials who have been removed from their posts for drawing their supervisors" attention to these abuses and afford the victims the necessary protection from and compensation for any discrimination which might ensue;"
Like the abuse situation in the USA, the Vatican has been slow to respond to this problem as well.

People who have lost their faith due to the “priest scandal” are people who use it as an excuse not to attend church anymore. This is easy now. This is their way out. They don’t get it that it has nothing to do with the faith.
If Jesus Christ (forgive me) had come down and did it himself, I would be an Atheist. However, since this isn’t the case, I will remain a Roman Catholic and die a Roman Catholic.
Whenever anyone brings up this story, I simply ask them what happened 2,000 years before the scandal? What was your excuse for not being a Catholic BEFORE 2001? Did you attend church then? And I also simply say, it’s rather old now…get over it.

a religious catholic with gay tendencies might see the priesthood as a way to cure gayness while serving god. besides, he is not attracted to women anyway.

why else would there be gay priests?

Until recently most gays are in the closet. What gay priest admitted that he was gay while being ordained? 🤷

So now you are saying that they become priests to heal their gayness?

Oh so you’re saying ‘gay Catholics’ are lying about their sexual orientation when they take up a position they know to be extremely sacred?

Oh yeah… that’s a light burden on their conscience that’s for sure…:rolleyes:

So now you are saying that they become priests to heal their gayness?
Yes. Its plausible. If I’m a religious gay catholic, thats what i’ll do. Unfortunately there is really no cure for gayness. So all a gay priest can do is to continue hiding in the closet. 😊
