Tomorrow, all Major League Teams will pay tribute to Jackie Robinson, the first to break the baseball color barrier in 1947.

Jackie Robinson was a great man, a great player (Go Dodgers! ;)) , and a great American. (and a great Republican, too!)

My 9-year-old just finished a book called Jackie and Me. Its hard for the young ones to comprehend that there were times when whites and blacks were separated. It just doesn’t cross their radar screens.

Thank God.

Jackie Robinson was a great player, but there were much better players than him who never even got a shot. I love reading about the Negro Leagues. It’s a shame guys like Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell never got a chance to play in the major leagues. Even Satchel Paige only got to pitch there in the twilight of his career. Anyway, what made Jackie so great, and what really opened the door for other black players, was not necessarily his play, but rather how he handled the hatred and threats from fans and players alike. It’s one of the classic American stories.
