Both Genesis 32 and 35 mention Jacobs name change to Israel, when was Jacob’s name changed to Israel permanently, and why is Jacob told twice about the name change. Also in Genesis 34 it appears as if there was already a nation or land called Israel, I thought that wouldn’t occur until Moses and Joshua?
My guess as to the name change is that he had to ask his brother Esau for forgiveness first before the name was permanently given to him.
Genesis 32:29 states
Then the man said, “You shall no longer be spoken of as Jacob, but as Israel, because you have contended with divine and human beings and have prevailed.”
Genesis 35:10 states
God said to him: “You whose name is Jacob shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” Thus he was named Israel.
Genesis 34:7 states
When they heard the news, the men were shocked and seethed with indignation. What Shechem had done was an outrage in Israel; such a thing could not be tolerated.
