“But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath. But let your speech be: Yea, Yea: No, No: that you fall not under judgment.”

Sometimes my mother makes me swear on Jesus Christ’s life, or to God, when she doesn’t believe me about something. I did this today (she’s missing some of her sleeping pills, thinks I took them, but I didn’t, so she makes me repeat over and over that I didn’t take them).

This is a sin, isn’t it? I always have a nasty feeling my gut when I do this, but she doesn’t believe me unless I do. Is this a sin? Will I fall under judgment for it?

You should reassure her that you would not lie to her, and that what you are saying is true, but without swearing to God. It certainly is not a mortal sin if what you are swearing to is true. But Jesus did teach us that it is enough to say Yes or No. For we are honest and trustworthy, because we imitate Him.

Say some reassuring words to her when she has her doubts.

…first thing you have to do is make sure that you and your mother are on the same page:

• Let her know that it is Jesus Himself that tells us not to swear:

34 But I say this to you, do not swear at all, either by heaven, since that is God’s throne; 35 or by earth, since that is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, since that is the city of the great King. 36 Do not swear by your own head either, since you cannot turn a single hair white or black. 37 All you need say is “Yes” if you mean yes, “No” if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the Evil One. (St. Matthew 5:34-37)

If she suggest that it is different to swear by Jesus read to her the following passage: St. Matthew 23:16-22.

• You must be truthful and not lie. (…if in the past you’ve broken that trust know that you must work arduously to repair the rift.)

Remember that what you do you should do it in the Lord! (Colossians 3:17)
