We never go the names of the sisters, but the brothers are Simon, Judas, James and Jose.

Also, for further evidence, read the port before this on.

God bless you Elvis!

PS you did not answer the question; Which is easier to show from Scripture, the immaculate conception and perpetual virginity of Mary; or as the Biblical evidence suggests in numerous ways, that Mary and Joseph had normal marital relations after the birth of Christ. You know the answer and you know I am right, but do not admit the obvious; it will crush your understanding concerning what you have been taught in light of the Biblical record. That is really between you and God; I can only present the Biblical evidence.
He’s not going to answer the question. He hasn’t yet since this thread started. The John at the foot at the cross is not related to Jesus. Like i said earlier Jesus’ brothers did not believe in Him until after the cross. So why would Jesus leave his mother to unbelievers. Those that you mentioned in Matt are his true brothers. No doubt about it. They are not from another marriage but from Mary and Joseph. Some have a hard time accepting the fact that Mary had marital relations with Joseph after Jesus. As far as the scripture from revelation that someone wrote, it is speaking of the Nation of Israel.

God Bless

WRONG.
The mother of James, Joses (wife of Clopas) is the “other Mary” spoken of at the foot of the cross. Since she is referred to as the virgin Mary’s sister - it can be assumed that they were kinsfolk (cousins, familial relations).
You will also see that her daughter is named, "Salome"

Mark 15:40 - “There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome”

John 19:25 - “But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.”

Matthew 27:55-56 - " There were also many women there… among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee."

James, Joseph/Joses, Simon and Judas/Jude are not sons of the Virgin Mary but of Clopas and his wife Mary. It’'s ALL there in Scripture - IF you bother to read it without an anti-Catholic bent.

With that - the answer to your question is, "The perpetual virginity of Mary." 👍
Hi Elvis,

Thank you for pointing out my error concerning Mark 15:40; you are correct!

However; this does not change the overwhelming evidence presented in Scripture that Mary and Joseph had children after Jesus birth.

Let’s look at Judas’s:
Judas, the Lord’s Brother (Mt. 13:55)

The Lord Jesus had brothers in spite of the fact that many people get very upset when you admit that. In Matthew 13:55 we meet four of them: “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And His brethren, James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas?” Those four were half brothers of Jesus, because our Lord was virgin born. They were the children of Joseph and Mary. Although we don’t know anything more about Joseph and Simon, we know a lot more about James. He became the head of the Jerusalem church and wrote the epistle bearing his name. We know a little about Judas, the brother of James and half brother of the Lord Jesus. He is best understood as the one who wrote the book of Jude because of his identification with James, the Lord’s half brother, who would have been the only James (besides the previously martyred Apostle James) that Jude’s readers would have easily recognized. In Mark 6:3, we even find that Jesus had sisters as well: “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and of Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?..”

Now James:
James, the brother of Jude and the half brother of Jesus, was the leader of the Jerusalem church. When Jude identified himself as the “brother of James”, he immediately acquired a lot of credibility, because James was a well-known man and an outstanding leader. That would help people listen to what he had to say.

I think it is an interesting footnote that when James wrote his epistle, he humbly said that he was “a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ…” (v. 1). He too, was the half brother of Jesus, but he didn’t draw any attention to that fact. Like Jude, he recognized that the family relationship didn’t matter anymore.

The brothers of Jesus didn’t consider themselves servants of Jesus until they had experienced a major change in their lives. Apparently, the brothers had grown up resenting Jesus. John 7:5 says, “For neither did His brethren believe in Him.” Jesus’ brothers mocked Him in verses 2-4, not really believing that He was the Messiah. Yet, their lives were transformed at some point, for both James and Jude changed from those who resented Jesus to those who were willing to be His servants. Somewhere along the line, they were converted. I believe it probably happened after the resurrection. Jesus appeared to James after He rose from the dead according to 1 Corinthians 15. That appearance must have finally convinced the two brothers, who then saw themselves as servants of Jesus Christ.

Unfortunately, when one cannot justify their teachings with scripture, they must come up with some other way to justify tradition, and so rationalizing away scripture is usually the rule of the day. Their authority becomes men instead of God. But what is man’s word worth compared to the Word of the living God? it is written, “let God be true and every man a Liar”.

Again; thank you for pointing my error as I take great care in handling of His word and may god bless you!

Gabriel of 12;

Me? Revelations 12:1
1 A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman 2 clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus.

I have an additional question/comment; You said it would be easier to show the perpetual virginity of Mary; please provide the Scriptural proof; we know that the idea did not come about until AD 300 or so and seems to originate out of the Catholic Church. Lastly, you did not address the immaculate conception of Mary; please provide the evidence from Scripture pertaining to that so we may all be enlightened from your intellect.

You really need to go back and read the posts regarding the Aramaic and Greek use of the words for brother (Ach and Adelphos, respectively).

Also, please provide proof for your opinions about James and Jude.
You use “I believe”, “apparently” and “it probably happened”.

Peace.

Oh - I keep forgetting that you adhere to Sola Scriptura.
**Well - it that’s a false doctrine. you see - Jesus told the Apostles: **
John 16:12-15
**“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.”
But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming.
He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.

First, show me that all of the information we have must come from scripture and then I’ll answer your question. The Bible itself condemns Sola Scriptura.
The Bible came from the Church - not the other way around. 👍

Mary’s perpetual virginity is implicitly taught by scripture by its LACK of information about her “other children”. There simply is no proof.
We can draw similar conclusions as to whether or not Jesus stood on his head every day. It just isn’t ain’t there . . .

I know what you speak of, but that is, has been and will probably always be a Catholic approach to validating tradition(s) by imposing on Scripture to fit the tradition that has no validity based on Scripture; this is my and others opinions, which are not worth much; so God will make the final determination; something we both agree on.

God bless Elvis; may he live long and prosper!

These arguments are weak at best; not even the best Catholic apologist can answer the question; what are the other oral traditions Paul spoke of that must have already existed?

So being man; we make things up as we go in the name of God; again my opinion and observations of many religions. the only two revelations God has given is general revelation, the creation, and special revelation, the Bible. The Catholic Church did not author the Bible; they may have organized it into a book, but even that has its own historical holes. So back to the Holy Spirit and it is what God wanted us to have and He chooses whatever method(s) to get it to us.

That woman would be Israel; often referred to this way in the OT; nothing to do with Mary…LOL
Gabriel of 12;

I wouldn’t expect you to understand these mysteries of Revelations, from you thinking Jesus had siblings, and the New Testament speaks about sexual relations between Joseph and Mary. I dont think your late century interpretation is funny, but sad. So I will not laugh to your misinterpretation because it is taught by non catholics and the such as you which only hinders or delays the true revelations of biblical interpretation.

The woman in Revelations is Mary she was the only one found with child, and gave birth to him, Israel is the Woman next who cried outloud with birth pains from her sufferings by the Greeks and Romans. Israel did not give birth to Jesus his BROTHERS AND SISTERS REJECTED HIM, remember.

This woman is also symbolized as the Catholic Church which suffers birth pains to give birth to you, so that you can become her offspring and give testimony to Jesus and obey his commandments. I dont expect you to understand these ancient text using a 19-20th century interpretation.

There is much more to say about Revelations and the Woman, But this may be off topic. Instead of lol statements; if you seek truth, lol at truth is not going to help you. What we Catholics share here with you, will not steer your salvation wrong but lead you to it. I only ask to be receptive to these teachings from Jesus and the Apostles handed down to the Catholic Church, learn of them, and then make a decision whether or not you wish to become an offspring of Mary and the body of Jesus Christ which is his Catholic Church. Lol at my faith is not a serious approach of seeking truth and understanding.

Peace be with you

Peace be with you.

Catholics believe in the Real Presence and we use scripture AND tradition to back it up.

Paul also speaks of the importance of the Eucharist but somehow, that’s not good enough for most Protestant denominations. They twist the scriptures to their own destruction (2 Peter 3:16) and invent doctrines such as Sola Scriptura and Sola fide - which have NO place in Christianity and never did from the earliest of times.

**The early Church depended on Tradition and oral teaching. There was no bible around at the time - only the Old Testament. **

The Apostles taught that Christians must be of like mind AND practice in ALL we do in our faith:
ONE body and ONE Spirit, ONE hope, ONE Lord, ONE faith, ONE baptism
(Acts 2:42, 1 Cor. 11:2, 1 Cor. 15:3,11, 2 Thess. 2:15, 2 Tim. 2:2, Eph. 4:5)

So, yes - you ARE right. God HAS chosen whatever methods he sees fit to get his revelation to us - and He left his Church in charge of receiving and interpreting it (Matt. 16:15-19, 18:15-18, John 16:12-15)

That woman would be Israel; often referred to this way in the OT; nothing to do with Mary…LOL
**Polyvalent symbolism (multiple symbols in one instance) - runs rampant throughout the Scriptures and Protestants will accept this fact - EXCEPT when it comes to Mary. **
The Woman in Rev. 12 has multiple meanings:.
1. Mary
2. Eve
3. Israel
4. The Church

It doesn’t take a biblical scholar to see this.

Oh, I almost forgot. Ummm . . . LOL.

The Jewish forefathers canonized the books of the bible not the catholic church. now i read that Rev 12 has multiple meanings. Its amazing how many people can take the word of God out of Context. The woman in this scripture is the nation of Israel. The same nation that is pictured as the wife of God (Is 54:5,6 Jer 3:6-8 31:32, Ezk 16:32, Hos 2:16)

Gabriel of 12;

Really! Jews do not accept the New Testament, where have you been? They also reject the 7 deutero-canonical books of the bible, before Protestants rejected them and came into existance centuries later. So to believe a Jew who rejects the book of Revelations that the woman pertains only to them, really jeopardizes your statement here.

I find your interpretations neither accepted by the religious Jewish community, nor the Christians from antiquity to date. Your interpretations are isolated in this century, which will pass away just as all the other heretical views come and go.

To think that your Jewish forefathers canonized the bible, exposes your limitations of Christian history. Why is it that the Catholic Church can give names and councils to the canonization of the bible? and you cannot give a single name of your Jewish forefather who canonized the bible. Now dont confuse the apostles name attached to the New Testament, with canonization. The two are very different, and revealed by the same Holy Spirit.

The literature of the bible books vary by poetry, parables, prophecies, symbolism etc. to name a few. To limit your interpretation without seeing through the eyes of the writer or revelator in the natural, and blind to the fulfillment by Jesus Christ himself through the Spirit. Puts limitations to your views and interpretations to see only the ink on a page. The Word of God is living and speaks to all ages past, present and future. What are you doing reading the bible without the Holy Spirit? who teaches and reveals these mysteries of God through his sacred Word in the bible from eternity? Not just to you in this century.

Your single interpretation leaves gaps in history and ages to come. God’s word is truth, it cannot decieve nor be decieved. The early Christians called this “mutilation” of the scriptures. The Word of God does not contradict itself, man does this all on his own. As you displayed here.

Think about it? peace be with you

enclosing;

I am not disagreeing that the Old testament always percieved Israel in the female context, not to mention Harlot by the prophets. Revelation is in the New Testament “covenant” which reveals the old covenant being fulfilled by Jesus Christ from a Heavenly vision. Now Revelations introduces the Word of God coming to earth, by way of a Woman, the gospels confirms Jesus being born of a Woman as Paul puts it, this woman is Mary. A new Heavenly Jerusalem will come down from heaven with the bride groom to meet his bride “The Catholic Church” who is also spoken of in the female context.

We are speaking Spiritual realities revealed from heaven in time. To try and stop eternity, and state the woman is “only” Israel, negates the victory of the Woman and her seed a fulfillment from Gen.3:15 over the dragon later in the same text of Revelations 12. Israel did not overcome satan, the new Eve Mary and her son Jesus did. We are the offspring of Her, the Catholic Church who gives witness and testimony of Jesus. History already records Catholic Saints being Martyred, giving witness and testimony of Jesus since Apostolic times to date. Revelations reveals a new Israel, and New Jerusalem. Revelations is not limited to the time frame of the old testament which Jews reject.

Luke 24:10 (Here is your third James) Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the {mother} of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.
Marks version; this gets even more interesting: MaryMagdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.
Matthews account: "Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. How many Mary’s were at the cross? Two; Mary Magdalene and Jesus mother Mary, who had sons James and Jose, Simon, and Judas

I believe this is even more evidence; but I don’t expect you either make the connection nor belief because of your own preconceived notions, not based upon Scripture in my opinion.
Sorry Tanner but this isn’t evidence of anything.
Luke 24:10, 11

10 The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; the others who accompanied them also told this to the apostles,
11 but their story seemed like nonsense and they did not believe them.

Matthew 27:55-56
There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
**Here are the only two “James’ " that can be clearly identified in the Bible- **
  1. James the son of Zebedee (Matthew 4:21)
    =
  2. The Apostle James, the son of Alphaeus (Matthew 10:3).
Nowhere in Luke 24:10, 11 does it say that this James is the “brother of Jesus”, nor does it identify this “Mary”, as the mother of Jesus. Therefore, this verse is irrelevant to this discussion but I will try to clear things up for you.

This James is a little harder to identify because there is not enough information but this person could be James, the son of Zebedeeb, or James the son of Alphaeus

This particular verse does not eliminate either two James’; See. Matthew 27:56 (Below).

If there was in fact a “third James” his name would most likely be followed by " Son of …", and we would know who his parent or parents were.

There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Note: Matthew 27:55-56 states, that these Mary’s were “looking on from a distance".

In other words**,** Mary (#1) the mother of James and Joseph And Mary (#2) **the **mother of the sons of Zebedee were “looking on from a distance”.

If we also count Mary the Mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, it appears that there were four Mary’s at the Crucifixion.

Mary the Mother of God was not “looking on from a distance” She was at the foot of the Cross. I hope that this clears things up.

As stated previously, this is most likely the Apostle James, the son of Alphaeus or James the son of Zebedee and not "a third James’ "

How you came to this conclusion, I have no idea.

Jesus did not have any biological siblings.

The Bible came from the Church - not the other way around. 👍 Who taught you that? Men or God?
I suppose the “Church” gave the OT? Also; the “Church” gave us the Holy Spirit, the author of Scripture? The “Church” inspired the Holy Spirit to use Catholic men to bring it to the world? Perhaps you have it all backwards…do ya think it is a possibility…just asking?

There are only 2 types of revelation God gave us, but this common knowledge and common sense, so not everyone can get it. The first is general revelation as presented in God’s creation form the stars in heaven to a flower blooming in the desert. The second is special revelation reveled directly from God to man and written down by the writers of the OT and NT. The question is therefore; is this special revelation enough for salvation because what more is their to obtain in this life?
Mary’s perpetual virginity is implicitly
taught by scripture by its LACK of information about her “other children”. There simply is no proof. New interpretation skills Elvis? Lack of information to affirm a positive; especially where there is sufficient information to conclude that He had brothers.
Here is the real issue you and other religious people or organizations must face; if He had real brothers and sisters, then this would be a serious error in a religious theology, which would kill the credibility on that precept and most likely other precepts, then on a religion as a whole could be in question. For example the JW’s, the Mormons, Muslims etc

You overlooked Galatians 1:18-19; can’t get anymore clearer than this…in the eyes of a believer can it? I look forward to you and others explaining this one away as well; in light of the overwhelming evidence of Scripture and the lack of any evidence to the perpetual virginity theory or immaculate conception theory.

18 "Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord’s brother."

Look I understand that if you admit the Scripture is right, then it presents a problem. I don’t know what to say past that; you and others have been presented this many times I’m sure. It is difficult to defend, so you must drawl your own conclusions based on the evidence or lack of evidence. I chose on the side of the overwhelming evidence and believe God would not tell Joseph to take Mary as his wife, then make Joseph not fully commit to the marriage covenant; we see no example where God told someone to marry, then not fulfill His design for marriage. Just a thought.

May God bless you this day!

First; I did not laugh at your faith; I laughed at your misinterpretation of a single passage; sorry I offended you, I did not realize how sensitive you are, so I will keep that in mind going forward and ask you to forgive me.

Let’s look, first of all, at the woman. He looks up and, in this very large vision, he sees a woman. Now, there are several symbolic women in the book of Revelation. There is a woman in chapter 2 who is called Jezebel. She’s given that symbolic name, because she represents pagan immorality. There is also, in the 17th chapter of Revelation, a prostitute, a whore, a scarlet woman who represents the apostate church, the corrupt church, the church that has abandoned its fidelity to God and gone awhoring after idols. And there is also another woman in the 19th chapter who is the bride, the true church, who is the bride of the lamb. And then there is this woman, the fourth of the symbolic women is Israel.

If you consider a traditional Catholic interpretation, this woman is Mary. And so you will see Mary sometimes depicted in art as clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and on her head are 12 stars. This cannot be Mary. Others have said, this is the church. The church is the one who brings forth the child? This cannot refer to the church. The church is never in the New Testament called a woman. The church is never a wife. The church is never pregnant. The church never gives birth to anything. The church is always viewed as a bride waiting to get married. The married supper of the lamb doesn’t occur till the 19th chapter of Revelation when we all get to Heaven. We are the chosen bride. We are betrothed, and we are to be a chaste virgin. We are not a pregnant wife.

Roman Catholic church sees Mary here, traditional covenant reformed theology sees the church here. Neither of those is possible. We are, as a church, a chaste virgin, a bride waiting for the marriage that hasn’t yet happened. There is one and only one real possibility. The woman is Israel. Israel is often called the wife of God. Sometimes a widow, even a divorced woman, according to Hosea. You find the same in Isaiah 47 and Isaiah chapter 50. Israel is depicted as a disloyal, unfaithful, adulterous wife who finally, in the end, will become faithful. Israel, all throughout the Old Testament, is the erstwhile wife of God. This has to be Israel.

And we know that the Messiah came out of Israel. We also know that we’re in the book of Revelation, and we’re getting close now in the chronology of Revelation to the time when the Messiah comes to establish His Kingdom. It’s not surprising then that Israel is being referred to. The salvation of Israel is near. The promised kingdom of Israel is near. Israel is becoming the focal point again in God’s redemptive plan, because the Messiah will come and establish the Kingdom.

But you don’t even have to talk about it in those sort of general theological terms. This has to be Israel, because this description is almost identical to the description of Israel given in Genesis 37:9 to 11. In Genesis 37:9 to 11, you have something unmistakably connected to this. There is this description of Joseph and a dream that Joseph had. And in the dream, verse 9, he had, he relates to his brothers. You remember? Joseph, one of the 12 sons of Jacob, and he has 11 brothers, and he said, “I have another dream, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars were bowing down to me.” Now that is almost a direct parallel with the exception that you have 12 stars in the book of Revelation. And what Joseph is saying in that passage, in that dream, is that, "I had a dream that my position in Messianic promise, my position in the divine plan is to be the promised line of God; he represents Messianic promise. He represents the glory of Israel. He represents the hope of the world. He has been exalted above his brothers, who and above others. Other people might be represented by the sun and the moon, and all of his brothers are beneath him in the dream.

This woman is exalted above everybody else. This woman is exalted and associated with the 12 tribes of Israel. So, clearly, the imagery here is of the nation that is more than the tribes. The nation that is above all other nations. This is imagery that is literally taken from 37th chapter of Genesis. Clothed, in this case, with the sun, showing brilliance and reflecting its light as the glorious nation that God has chosen. The imagery here is just to show you that this is connected to the purposes of God with Israel, and it takes a little liberty with changing the imagery a bit from Genesis 37, but the parallel is very, very obvious. There’s no other parallel such as that anywhere in Scripture.

Hope this helps and again I apologize for offending you and may the God of all creation bless you!
