Hi, PPSA:

By “apocrypha” what exactly do you mean? Because I assume you mean the protestant version of apocrypha, which is normally called the Deuterocanon. I won’t go into how many Books of the Bible were in the Canon as of 382 AD, or whether the “apocrypha” was included, because history tells us that it was, and a dispute of this is as worthy of a debate as whether or not the Holocaust really happened. However, I wanted to point your attention to a recent news event, that may shed even more credence to the Catholic stand, (a historically accurate stand) on the Deuterocanonical Books. Researchers just finished digitizing the oldest Biblical manuscript available to us. The “Codex Sinaiticus” is available for viewing at the following site:

codexsinaiticus.org/en/

The reason I bring this up is because the list of Books included in this 4th century manuscript includes Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees, 4 Maccabees, Sirach, and Wisdom. The manuscript does have missing pieces but all that exists of it is on the above mentioned site. Just wanted to bring to your attention, that the Deuterocanonical Books were certainly being read as early at the middle of the fourth century, before the Council of Rome determined the official Canon for all Christians throughout the world.
There is no doubt that they EXISTED and that some or all were books referred to by the Jews and/or early Christians, but they were not considered canonized by the Jews or early Christians because they were not written by prophets or apostles and didn’t meet other requirements for canonization.

Here’s a great example of biblical evidence: see Luke 1:34.

The archangel Gabriel tells Mary that she’s going to conceive and bear a child.

Now, remember, she’s bethrothed to a man.

Yes, she is bethrothed which is like marriage but with no sexual relations yet (I previously called it being “engaged” and got my head chewed off…but it was like a “very serious engagement”)

What the angel Gabriel is telling her, under “normal” circumstances would be met with, “Of course! That’s what usually happens when people get married and engage in marital relations!”

But, no, the Blessed Mother’s response is, “How can this be since I know not man?” How can I conceive a child when I’m a consecrated virgin?

In modern language she would be saying "How can this be since I haven’t had sex yet?"

Certainly this is Scriptural evidence that she was a virgin, and planned to stay a virgin. 👍
To me it means that it is evidence she was a virgin but I don’t see any proof that she planned to remain one. Scripturally she would be expected to have marital relations after marriage. (1 Corinthians 7:3)

Why is it so important for Mary to be a virgin unless to justify Catholic tradition? There is no scriptural evidence of it and I really don’t see it having anything to do with Jesus and his teachings to us…He didn’t come on earth to make Mary into a Goddess figure but to teach us about God’s teachings.

Now this may be a very simple answer, but here goes:

Mary had to remain a virgin forever . Her virginity proves the miracle of Jesus. If that precious proof was ever removed by Mary having sexual relations with Joseph, then how can anyone accept Him as Messiah according to all that was prophesied about His birth ?
First of all Jesus life fulfilled many prophecies and he didn’t need Mary to remain a virgin to prove anything. It was prophetic that she was a virgin at his birth, but nothing more. Aside from everything else he did, he died on the cross, was buried, resurrected, and ascended into heaven! That should be proof enough.

There is no doubt that they EXISTED and that some or all were books referred to by the Jews and/or early Christians, but they were not considered canonized by the Jews or early Christians because they were not written by prophets or apostles and didn’t meet other requirements for canonization.
Actually they were canonized at the Council of Rome in 382 AD and several subsequent counsels. This is what I referred to as a matter of history. As far as passing some sort of a canonization test, a brief history lesson is in order. These seven Books were at one time thought to be written in Greek. We now know that at least two of them were actually written in Hebrew which is one of the tests. Martin Luther removed these seven Books during the reformation (which I refer to as a defection because you can only reform something while still being a part of that something) along with the Book of James, Jude, Hebrews and Revelation. It wasn’t until after receiving pressure from his peers that he included these four New Testament Books within his shortened German Luther Bible. All of the Deuterocanonicals are alluded to by New Testament Scripture, and as the earliest manuscript shows us, along with several Church Father writings from the first couple of centuries, they were all referred to by early Christians.

Due to time restraints, I won’t quote verse, but my belief is that the Bible is the Word of God, written for our instruction by inspiration of God and that is it true and without reproof.
Amen! 👍

However, to paraphrase St. Augustine, you would not believe in the Bible were it not for the authority of the Catholic Church!
To really understand the Bible it is crucial to believe with heart and mind in Jesus and to ask guidance from the Holy Spirit.
Unfortunately, imjustme, ever since the Reformation, when people do that and think they’re getting the guidance of the Holy Spirit, what happens is they get their own man-made, fallible, non-authoritative doctrines.

The existence of over 40,000 Christian denominations is testament to that fact! :sad_yes:

Here’s a (non-exhaustive) list of different things that Christians have all come up with their own ideas about, just by reading the Bible and believing “with heart and mind in Jesus and” asking “guidance from the Holy Spirit”

I’m going to turn this around on you. It wasn’t important for Mary to be a perpetual virgin for Catholic Tradition. As you say, who would care? Unless of course it was the truth and as the Truth, the Church has an obligation to all to keep it.

Ask yourself, why it is important to you that Mary did not remain a virgin. Does making her ,more worldly help your faith in any way? Or is it just a way to attempt to discredit the Catholic Church which you left?

In modern language she would be saying “How can this be since I haven’t had sex yet?”
imjustme, that simply does not make sense. The angel Gabriel told Mary you are going to conceive, not “you’ve already conceived a baby! Congrats! You’re pregnant already!” If the angel had told Mary the latter, her response would make sense.

However, if you’re betrothed and planning on having the normal course of marriage, when the angel tells you you’re going to conceive you say, “Yay! When?” Not, how can this be since I know not man? Unless, of course, you’ve consecrated yourself to God and know you plan a life of celibacy.
Why is it so important for Mary to be a virgin…?
Because every single Marian doctrine and dogma reinforces and highlights the divinity of Christ.

Take this doctrine of Mary’s perpetual virginity. It emphasizes the divinity of Jesus by telling us how fitting it was the the womb that housed God Incarnate was set apart just for that purpose! Imagine the Ark of the Covenant in the OT, which housed the sacred Word of God, later being a container for some pretty pebbles. It would diminish the sacredness of the stone tablets. Also, remember what happened to an Israelite who inadvertently touched the Ark–he was striken dead–that’s how sacred the Ark was because of what it carried!
He didn’t come on earth to make Mary into a Goddess figure but to teach us about God’s teachings.
Amen!

As I said in another post, there were three James’…and I don’t claim to be infallible…sometimes if something doesn’t make sense I do research (as I’m doing here) and learn more. I have study bibles and bibles in different translations and of course the internet. I also learn from listing to my pastor preaching and I listen to mp3s of Pastor Chuck Smith preaching…so between listening to experienced scholars, studying from reputable texts and the most important…help from the Holy Spirit which was sent by Jesus specifically for this purpose…I do ok 🙂
How do you know there were three James and not only two? Why couldn’t James, the brother of the Lord, also be one of the Apostles? What is your proof of that? It seems to me that there is a much better probability that they are one in the same, the son of Mary and Alpheus, the brother of St. Joseph, as I described in my post above. This must be true if you think the three evangelists saw the same three women at the cross. I grant you that it is possible that they did not, but is seems to me to be more than a coincidence.

Also, Why do you think Pastor Chuch Smith has better credentials to teach the truth about salvation than the Catholic Church. What makes you beleive him and not Pope John Paul II or Pope Benedict XVI?

I know that site is “tame”…I could post others but they would likely be considered offensive to Catholics and that is not my intention. If you want to know of the Pagan influences in the Roman Catholic Church, you can search the internet. I won’t oblige with any more information except to tell you that I have personally seen it. Not only in the little things that still remain in the Catholic Churches and Traditions…but especially when you go to Italy, you see it full-blown everywhere.

I lived in an italian village with a church built in the early 1600s based on the story that Mary appeared to two children and asked for a church to be built on that spot. Every year in the Spring and Fall, a huge festival is given for this Madonna and the festivities include practices that are more Pagan than Christian in nature.

As a matter of fact, this year they decided to scale back the celebrations to respect the lives lost in the earthquake of nearby L’Aquila. The one thing they did NOT cut back on were the bonfires on the street as the huge, caped statue of the Madonna was paraded through. It is a beautiful scene but not one that I would consider of Christian origins.

I can’t attach pictures here but you can find similar instances if you do an image search on google and use the search words “fuochi della madonna” (fires of the madonna)
JL: I just found this post looking for something else, I missed it before. Well if this is true don’t you feel it your Christian duty to show us? Why would truth offend anyone? If it isn’t ture then yes that would offend. In fact I am more offended by your accusations without evidence. You made the accusation now show your evidence. I’m not searching the web, doing your work for you. I have a saying, a statement made without evidence is evidence the statement is false. So give your evidence so we can discuss it.

Imjustme,

It occurred to me that there is one more bit of scriptural evidence that strongly suggests that James, Joseph, Judas and Simon are not literally brothers of Jesus Christ.

St. Jude starts off his epistle this way:

Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept safe for Jesus Christ:

Now if Jude (Judas) was truly a literal brother of Jesus, why would he only claim to be a brother of James? There’s a lot of evidence now against your literal, english reading of the word brother in scripture. It certainly is not obviously true, as you previously claimed.
What say you now?

I don’t agree about Mary but wow, that’s a very interesting understanding of Ezek. 44:1…where did you get that from? How about the Prince mentioned in the following verse? What is your understanding of who he is?
JL: David is the prince, Ez34:24 And I, the LORD, will be their God, and My servant David will be prince among them; I the LORD have spoken. .

Actually they were canonized at the Council of Rome in 382 AD and several subsequent counsels.

I had read that they were canonized by the Council of Trent, some 1500 years after they were written. Is this not so?

This is what I referred to as a matter of history. As far as passing some sort of a canonization test, a brief history lesson is in order. These seven Books were at one time thought to be written in Greek. We now know that at least two of them were actually written in Hebrew which is one of the tests.

I don’t doubt that there were copies in Hebrew as my understanding is that they were read by the Jews, however even the Jews of Palestine, including the Jewish Council of Jamnia which met in 90 AD rejected the Apocrypha as scripture. One example, Philo, a Jewish teacher who lived in the 1st century quoted from nearly every OT canonical book, but never from the apocrypha.

**Yes, they were sometimes alluded but not quted as canonical text. There are other places in the NT where non-canonical text is alluded to or referred to, but that does not make them all canonical.

I’d appreciate your reply on these two questions:

*- Please show me some place where Jesus or one of His apostles quotes any of it as being inspired?
  • If the apocryphal books are inspired, why weren’t the writers of these books confirmed by miracles or include prophecy like OT and NT writers?***
I’m interested to read your response, however I am aware that we are off topic and I don’t know the forum rules for this…please let me know, as I’m new here and don’t want to overstep my welcome 🙂

Amen! 👍

Thank you! I’m glad we agree on this, at least! 🙂

However, to paraphrase St. Augustine, you would not believe in the Bible were it not for the authority of the Catholic Church!

**I don’t know why YOU believe in the Bible, but I personally believe in it after reading, studying and learning about it through the help of the Holy Spirit.

Honestly…I’m not speaking from any dogma on my part or anymosity towards Catholics…but my personal experience is that I was raised in a Catholic home and provided with lots of Roman Catholic doctrine. This included 6 years of Roman Catholic boarding school in Italy (with nuns as teachers) and having several Catholic religious in the family (including one that worked at the Vatican)…I was Catholic into my 40s, yet I never was taught to read and study the Bible. With all the books and fancy things we needed to show up with each September, can you believe that a Bible was not one of them? So, I can not honestly say that the Catholic Church helped me come to my current belief in the Bible. **

Unfortunately, imjustme, ever since the Reformation, when people do that and think they’re getting the guidance of the Holy Spirit, what happens is they get their own man-made, fallible, non-authoritative doctrines.

Yes, I also agree that some people have claimed false doctrine either due to ignorance or for their own gain. This however was predicted in Jesus’ days, so we shouldn’t be surprised. It is further inspiration to me to read and study more, because that way when I see false doctrine, I will recognize it better. To me it is like when one of my children calls me on the phone…they may not say who they are but I recognize the very sound of their breathing…they might only ‘sigh’ and I’ll say “what’s wrong?”…we need to get to this intimate closeness with God through reading and learning His Word so that when it’s not Him, we can hang up! 🙂

The existence of over 40,000 Christian denominations is testament to that fact! :sad_yes:

Baptism

**Yes, I’ll stop at Baptism…can you tell me where the Catholic practice of Baptism is shown in the Bible? Specifically I mean 1) Baptism of a child vs adult and 2) sprinkling vs. immersion

I’m curious about this on a personal level because I have been baptised as a child by the Roman Catholic Church and am considering being rebaptized and wonder if it would be biblically necessary. Thanks.

Haha…so what’s new? 😃

**Mary was blessed to have been chosen by God to bring Jesus into this world as a Man. She is an inspiration of faith and obedience to God and I have no reason to discredit her as a faithful person, God fearing believer and earthly mother of Jesus Christ.

Her being a perpetual virgin or not does not affect my faith in anyway, because my faith is in God regardless of Mary. Scripturally Mary is very important because she had to be a Jew from the house of David…as you may know, Jews inherit “their Jewishness” from their mothers and the OT prophecies were that she would come from that bloodline. After that (giving birth), nothing more about her matters…Jesus the Messiah came…she fulfilled her prophetic calling and that is all that she had to do.**

Or is it just a way to attempt to discredit the Catholic Church which you left?

**I have no specific interest in discrediting the Catholic Church. My only personal goal is to learn the truth and remain scriptural and to me it is clear that Mary was not ever virgin.

If you have a dilemma and it comes down to scripture vs. the Catholic Church, which do you choose? I chose the Bible, but would be interested to hear your honest thoughts. **

imjustme, that simply does not make sense.

Betrothal lasted a year or more and Mary’s understanding is that this was something happening in the immediate future. This is why she is surprised in my opinion.

Unless, of course, you’ve consecrated yourself to God and know you plan a life of celibacy.

Please show me somewhere in the Bible where it says that Mary consecrated herself to a life of celibacy before giving birth. Why would she be engaged/betrothed to Joseph if she had no intention of having sexual relations?

Because every single Marian doctrine and dogma reinforces and highlights the divinity of Christ.

I’m sorry, (no offense), but I don’t believe in Marian doctrine, only what is in the two covers of my Bible.

Take this doctrine of Mary’s perpetual virginity. It emphasizes the divinity of Jesus by telling us how fitting it was the the womb that housed God Incarnate was set apart just for that purpose! Well, unless of course you believe in the communion of Saints, where Mary and the other Saints can interceed for us with God. Catholics believe Mary has and continues to do good in the world. She was at Lourdes, and Fatima, for instance, increasing the Faith of the devout and bearing witness to the athiest.
Or is it just a way to attempt to discredit the Catholic Church which you left?
I have no specific interest in discrediting the Catholic Church. My only personal goal is to learn the truth and remain scriptural and to me it is clear that Mary was not ever virgin. Why is that clear to you? At most its ambiguous, and there clearly is no hard proof of her ever having sex.
If you have a dilemma and it comes down to scripture vs. the Catholic Church, which do you choose? I chose the Bible, but would be interested to hear your honest thoughts
At the beginning of my biblical journey (I’ve been reading the Bible daily for 35 years, usually 5 chapters a day and whatever else I need for apologetics), I used to have questions about how things were interpreted. I took the time to explore the Catholic interpretation of those verses and I found that they had always considered things I hadn’t thought of that made me understand that the Catholic position was the correct one… Over time, I began to understand that the Catholic Church was the true deposit of Faith and that when I had an issue with what it was teaching, the problem was with me and not with the Church, and that I simply needed to understand how they got to their conclusions. Over the last several years, I find that my reading of the Bible is in complete harmony with that of the Church.

So its not a matter of choosing between the Bible and the Catholic church, Its a matter of understanding the Bible as it was meant to be read, and when you do that, you’ll have absolutely no conflicts with the Catholic Church.

You chose to learn how to read scripture with a Protestant Church. You could have done the same thing in your Catholic church by just applying a little effort. there is the homilies at mass, bible study groups , EWTN, and lots of internet access to any one who wants to understand the truth as it was meant to be.

How do you know there were three James and not only two? Why couldn’t James, the brother of the Lord, also be one of the Apostles?

**Because it is written that his blood brothers were not yet believers (I quoted verse twice and won’t look it up again at this time) **

**My trust in God and faith is not hinged on any one man. Men can and do make mistakes. It is our nature. What makes me believe the teachings of Chuck Smith and other bible based Christians is that when there is a question or doubt about something being taught, he can direct you to scripture which explains it, not something written by man. To me listening to Catholic doctrine is like having someone say something as fact and when you question it, they say “because I said so!” (redirecting you to their own teachings)…whereas when you are forced to find the answers within the Bible, without having to fall back on man’s traditions and words, that is much more inspiring to me.

When you speak of credentials, it boils down to…the credentials of the inspired Word of God vs. the credentials of man. However faithful and honest a Pope may be, he is still human and not infallible. The Word of God is infallible.

Jesus said “scripture cannot be broken” (John 10:35)
To the devil, Jesus consistently responded “It is written…” (Matt 4:4-10)
Jesus affirmed the Bibles divine inspiration (Matt 22:43), its indestructibility (Matt 5:17-18), its infallibility (John 10:35), its final authority (Matt 4:4, 7, 10), it’s historicity (Matt 12:40 and 24:37), its scientific accuracy (Matt 19:2-5) and its factual inerrancy (John 17:17, Matt 22:29).

If my preacher confirms what Jesus says and refers to the same scriptures as Jesus did, that is enough credentials for me. As soon as what I hear or see from the pews is different, I’m outta there – better things to do with my Sunday morning!
