James, half brother of Jesus?

While talking with my Dad today he told me his Pastor (Lutheran) said James (NT book) was the half brother of Jesus. When I looked at his NIV Bible, the preface to the book of James indicated he was PROBABLY the brother of Jesus. I do not believe this and replied it was the incorrect translation of “brother” as used in scriptures…but would like more information.
