Anybody know of all the debates (and where to get them) in which White gets definitely beaten by his Catholic opponent? I know there are more than a few, and I am under the impression that White is now somewhat hesitant about debating the big names in Catholic apologetics. Anyway, what and where are the debates that he has unarguably lost?

While whoever it is who does this is at it, could you also find the ones where White definitely beats his Catholic opponent? Just so we can get the whole story, ya know, instead of just the side we like to hear.

Sigh. Part of being able to appreciate / research both sides is knowing the weak spots on both sides. James White is an extremely vocal and vitriolic opponent of the Catholic Church. And the reason I should not be aware of the debates he has lost is…?

<< Anyway, what and where are the debates that he has unarguably lost? >>

I stand by my scoring of these debates (out of 10 points) from 2002, somewhat humorous, but accurate. Covers up through the Madrid “saints” debate in 2002. There were a few after this, notably White vs. Michuta 2004 on OT canon, which I give the edge to Michuta 6 to 4.

Protestant Apologist James White, see bottom of page

Where White “clearly” lost, in my opinion:

Sungenis vs. White on Papacy and papal infallibility (Oct 2000)
Akin vs. White on BAM radio (1995)
Matatics vs. White on sola scriptura (1997)

Where White “clearly” won, in my opinion:

Tim Staples vs. White on papal infallibility (May 2000), Tim unfortunately was debating a different topic during opening statement, and had to play 'catch up"
Fr. Stravinskas vs. White on purgatory (2001), Fr’s opening statement wasn’t bad, but lost during cross-exam

There are others that are closer, but you wanted “clear” winners. The Pacwa ones I do not think were “clear” wins for White since they were all close. I score these 6 White to 4 Pacwa, or 5 to 5 (tie).

Someday I may get around to analyzing these in depth, writing an article on each, plus all the William Lane Craig. That’s another big unfinished project on my apologetics site. Where are all these debates available? They are still sold by White’s AOMIN. Or they are part of my “Best of PhilVaz” (you can send me an Email).

If you read the bottom table at PhilVaz’s site linked in prior post, you see that White believes he has won every debate versus Catholics except for 1 in which he gave Matatics a tie on the subject of the Mass/Eucharist in 1992.

Marco << he gave Matatics a tie on the subject of the Mass/Eucharist in 1992 >>

Yes, that’s another one I forgot. White definitely lost that one. I put it at 7 Matatics vs. 3 White, or could be an 8 to 2. Even White says it was a tie. Matatics didn’t let White get away with anything in that debate, since Matatics was a little timid in their sola scriptura debate from 1992 (held the previous evening I think), wasting precious minutes putting in a “plug” for Vincent Lewis. Those were the days. Matatics “redeemed” himself on sola scriptura in their 1997 rematch. They’ve actually debated 3 times on that subject (the 1990 one is unavailable).

Too bad Matatics has been kind of fringe the past 15 years, but what you hear in these debates is standard classic orthodox Catholic apologetics and standard anti-Catholic Reformed baptist (for the most part) teaching.

How can I find that Mass one (vs Matatics)? I looked through A&O Ministries and couldn’t find it. Google’s not helping me either. 😦

AOMIN sells the Pacwa vs. White on Mass (1991) I think. A good debate, and Pacwa/Matatics covers virtually the same material, but Matatics was a bit more aggressive.

For my “Best of PhilVaz” CD, send me an Email.

BTW, the Staples vs. White on Papacy was July 2000, the May 2000 was the Justification debate Sungenis vs. White. Oct 2000 was the Sungenis vs. White papacy debate in Clearwater FL. 👍

Jimmy akin totally kicks his (james white)*** in the bible answer man debate…it was domination!!!

Youtube has some of James Whites debates. I don’t know how new they are.

I realize this was posted a while ago, but I do want to clear the air: James White is NOT hesitant to debate Catholic apologists, Catholic apologists are hesitant to debate James White. Anyone who takes the time to read White’s blog would know this. Please understand that. I am a practicing Catholic, I am not saying that becasue I am biased towards White, I am saying that becasue it is true. Now, why they are hesitant to debate White I don’t know, you would have to ask them, but it is the Catholic Apologists who tend not to want to debate White.

Where are the debates he as unarguably lost? It is difficult to determine a clear winner in a debate usually becasue both debaters will declare themselves the winner, and in most cases both debaters are equally matched. For example in the debate between him and Madrid on Scriptura Sola both he and Madrid claim to have won the debate with equal varacity. Debaters will also claiim victory simply becasue they were able to pursuade more people of their position. However- simply becasue you can pursuade someone of your position does not mean your position is correct, and that goes equally for White or any Catholic apologist.

The best way to determine a winner is to understand the art of argumentation/ the use of the logic, and evaluate the person based on the stregnth of the arguments or logic they present. That is how a true winner can be determined.

Yes, he does, (which I even think White realizes) but that was not a debate, that was a radio discussion which is far different. (White takes great pains to point this out- which is why I think White feels that Akin had the upper hand during the discussion. White continues to challange Akin for this reason to a “real” debate.)

Let Jimmy Akin take White on in a formal professional debate which is moderated, etc. Hopefully Akin would perform just as well. The point is that calling the Bible Answer Man a debate is misleading.

Staples not only lost on the opening, he lost during the Q and A. In debates, the real debate comes during the Q and A. It as in the Q and A that White twisted him up like a Pretzel.

You are right about Stravinskus. The problem in that debate was that Stravinskus did not know his audience. A question was asked about Alms giving and getting souls out of Purgatory. Stravinskus foolishly agreed that alms giving could get souls out of Purgatory without explanation of his answer, or qualifying it in any way. The reaction of the questioner was to take out his check book and ask “How much will get me out of Purgatory?”

White was very fond of your comments (to a point) in the Staples/Purgatory debate thread earlier this year. I agree that White likes debating anybody (except for Sungenis for a little while there). But I think it is hardly the case that you can blanketly say Catholics are “hesitant” to debate White. Have you ever been to his debates page? He must have like 40 debates there versus Catholics. I don’t get this myth he advances that Catholics are so afraid to debate him—except for 40 times versus variety of opponents.

If he wanted to do more online debates, I’m sure he would find even more receptivity. For example, in the '03 debate with Sungenis, White quite badly misrepresented Augustine’s position on the Real Presence. In an oral debate, it is difficult to cross-reference the way he snipped quotes from context, and those only watching the debate don’t get to hear a proper rebuttal. And frankly, there are plenty of claims he makes in debate that would not get a free pass so easily in a non-oral debate.

Ah, you remember that? Actually I had forgotten about that, but yes you are correct. I was rather taken aback when he read those comments on air.

Let me reiterate I am a practicing Catholic in full communion with the Catholic Church. I have no agenda to push, therefore I am not in any way cheerleading for White. I just wish Catholic Answers would take him a little more seriously then they do. Catholic Answers can do far better then they are doing, if they wanted to.
I agree that White likes debating anybody (except for Sungenis for a little while there). But I think it is hardly the case that you can blanketly say Catholics are “hesitant” to debate White.
Perhaps I should rephrase: Catholic Answers, the largest, most public and well known organization is hesitant. Staples admitted this to me when I met him back in 2006. Staples claimed that Karl Keating did not want to keep giving White a platform. (Which I take to mean something along the lines of “Let’s ignore him then he will go away.”) White is not going away, in fact his organization seems to be growing, and White seems to be gaining in popularity. Christopher Hitchens was supposed to debate him until he contracted cancer. If White was truly a no body (as Catholic Answers wants to portray) someone of Hitchen’s pay grade (for lack of a better word) would not be taking him on. You think if I challanged someone like Hitchens to debate he would take my up on it? No- even if I had the credentials to do so. Why? Becasue I am a no body, who no one knows.

I think White was hesitant to take on Sungenis becasue of Sungenis’s position regarding the Earth being the center of the universe. White felt Sungenis held no credibility among Catholic apologists as a result. However White is now going to debate Sungenis.
Have you ever been to his debates page? He must have like 40 debates there versus Catholics. I don’t get this myth he advances that Catholics are so afraid to debate him—except for 40 times versus variety of opponents.
Yes, but it seems to me most of those debates are from the early 2000’s. Staples debated White on Purgatory- but that was a radio debate wasn’t it? That was not a public moderated official debate.

What I am trying to say is considering the past, Catholic Answers should now be very familier with White’s tactics, arguments, etc. Now is the time to refine their own arguments and come up with some new arguments White may not have heard of. Have you noticed that it is rare that the tables can be turned on White in a debate? (This is not to say White always gives great answers, but it is to say it is difficult to un-nerve him, or get him flustered.) Why? Becasue White is already familier with the arguments his opponents are going to use, and has had time to formulate replies to them. In short, what I am saying is that it is time for Catholic Answers to write a new play book. Most importantly, Catholic Answers would be light years ahead of themselves if they actually took time to read his materials and going over past debates prior to debating him!
If he wanted to do more online debates, I’m sure he would find even more receptivity. For example, in the '03 debate with Sungenis, White quite badly misrepresented Augustine’s position on the Real Presence. The problem with Augustine is that in places he seems to anticipate what would become the Calvanist view of the Eucharist, and in places he is very Catholic. It is clear that the terminology and lanquage of Augustine was not refined.

In any case- I agree that the best way to debate someone is in writting. When the debate is in writting, you have time to think, research, and not simply answer off the top of your head. You also have time to consult experts in that field. I am sure if Karl Keating or Tim Staples, or whoever was interested in doing such a project with White, White would be more then open to it. (Of course I do not know White personally, but I make that hypothesis based on what I have read on his blog.)

If White was truly a no body (as Catholic Answers wants to portray)
I do not see Catholic Answers in the arena of debate much period. You don’t see them debating Hitchens or R.C. Sproul instead, as if they also consider them all “nobodies” as you suggest. Not debating someone does not mean you must think they are “nobody” even if James White thinks that about you, as you say. There could be any other reasons someone is not interested in debating someone else, the least of which is not the fact that you’ve debated him several times already and don’t have the same rabid obsession for more debates that White does.

Still, even Catholics in admiration of White such as yourself are somehow not dissuaded by his prowess. Why is that? Like you said, CA gave him a number of debates years ago and there are plenty of articles from CA and elsewhere that I think thoroughly cut through the poverty of his arguments.

Another alternative to why CAL is doing less debates is because so many others out there are doing a good job of it. America doesn’t necessarily need another fast food restaurant. And even some posters on this site do a good job rebutting anything new White offers. PhilVaz has the self-proclaimed “best anti-James White site” on the internet. And frankly, it’s thorough and stays on point.

A final alternative to why I think he’s not getting the ADDITIONAL debates that he wants is because of his condescending, adolescent remarks against the folks of Catholic Answers in constant fashion. You have heard this, have you not? His commentary is so chock full of ad hominem nonsense, that you have to sift through it to find out what his actual arguments are. On his radio show, he’s either hung up on how much money Catholic Answers raises, or how CAL listeners are a bunch of brainwashed fools, or how Steve Ray can’t even be considered an apologist, and the list goes on and on and on. We can find quotes if you want, but if you listen to him as you say, you know what I’m talking about. Some of it borders on unChristian if not downright unChristian. This is not attracting him the attention of serious students of the faith.

Of course, I have to add to this thread. 😛

Apologist << In short, what I am saying is that it is time for Catholic Answers to write a new play book. Most importantly, Catholic Answers would be light years ahead of themselves if they actually took time to read his materials and going over past debates prior to debating him! >>

As the SNL Mike Myers character “Dieter” once said, “Mr. White, your narrative has become tiresome.”

There really hasn’t been anything “new” in White’s writings or debates against Catholics for 20 years. I’ve “studied” the guy almost that long (well since 1992). CA has known about him and debated him (at least in the “old days”) longer than that. White’s debated (with various Catholics) the topics of sola scriptura five times (3 with Matatics, 1 with Madrid, 1 with Pacwa), sola fide/eternal security four or five times, the Mass/Eucharist four times (1 with Pacwa, 1 with Matatics, twice with Sungenis), Marian doctrines two or three times (Matatics, Fastiggi, and now Ferrara), purgatory a couple times, the saints, the priesthood, OT canon twice, the Papacy a couple times, etc. There basically are not many Catholic-Protestant “topics” left to debate. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy these debates, and White is probably the best “anti-Catholic” debater out there, but it does get tiresome listening to him. The same might be said of William Lane Craig, who delivers virtually the same speech every time, but for some reason I don’t get tired listening to him. At least Craig is on “our” side.

White’s main “case” against Catholicism has been answered quite thoroughly in here. From some old threads:

White’s Papacy argument
(see the PDF’s in this thread, it’s all been done much better with more sophistication over 100 years ago, the Anglican vs. Catholic battles in England)

The Papacy and James White

White’s invitation to Guardian and others

White and sola scriptura

White and old arguments he won’t use anymore

Documenting James White (and ad hominem, etc)

White and debates (I conceded he’s won a few more)

And so on…that’s enough for now. Do a search for more.

Marco << A final alternative to why I think he’s not getting the ADDITIONAL debates that he wants is because of his condescending, adolescent remarks against the folks of Catholic Answers in constant fashion. I think you got that right. Most of these kind of negative statements come out in his written material or on his webcast/radio program. It gets annoying. But to be fair, you normally don’t find this in his oral debates. Still reason enough for CA to ignore him for now. But would I very much look forward to a White vs. Hahn or White vs. Martignoni debate? Probably. :o Would I ever publicly debate him? Probably not. Could I ever? Probably, with much practice. Do I practice this kind of formal debating? No. 😛

(Probably) the single best page answering James White’s anti-Catholic apologetics (some unfinished here, but many of these topics show up in White’s debates)

And don’t forget the prolific Dave Armstrong, this guy never gives up (or gives in) either. 👍

Fair point, I am only trying to say that ignoring him does not make him go away.

No, I am not dissuaded, becasue my Faith is stronger (by God’s Grace) then the powers of human intellect. I know that the Catholic Church is the real deal not by intellect alone, but by Faith.

Yes, I have been to that website. I interacted with Phil over email some time ago. At that time he was studying philosophy in college.
A final alternative to why I think he’s not getting the ADDITIONAL debates that he wants is because of his condescending, adolescent remarks against the folks of Catholic Answers in constant fashion. You have heard this, have you not?
Oh, indeed I have! Indeed sir! Let there be no mistake, White’s head is the size of a blimp. But Catholic Answers have taken their fair share of swipes and jabs at him.
His commentary is so chock full of ad hominem nonsense, that you have to sift through it to find out what his actual arguments are.
Such is the nature of polemical writtings.
On his radio show, he’s either hung up on how much money Catholic Answers raises, or how CAL listeners are a bunch of brainwashed fools, or how Steve Ray can’t even be considered an apologist, and the list goes on and on and on.
Yes, I have to say he made me laugh with his “Steve Ray Jones” bit.

As for his bit on money and Catholic Answers, White was simply comparing CA with his own organization. Essencially White’s claim is that he does more then CA with less resources then CA.
We can find quotes if you want, but if you listen to him as you say, you know what I’m talking about. Some of it borders on unChristian if not downright unChristian. This is not attracting him the attention of serious students of the faith.
In the end what I am trying to say is this: White is one of the best Protestant apologists around, and what does Catholic Answers do? Waste their time with the Jack Chick type Protestant apologists and then congradulate themselves on how well they do against them. Why? Why waste time with the Jack Chick’s? They are the one’s CA ought to ignore becasue anyone with half a brain would know what idiot’s they are.

James White on the other hand, now here is someone who can clearly provide meaningful and well thought out arguments which interact with the Catholic claim. I am not saying he is irrefutable, I am saying since he is one of the best- HE is the one whom CA ought to be spending their time on, not Jack Chick.

That’s fair enough. I wouldn’t spend much on Chick either, although it seems people have been getting his stuff in the mail or something more in the last year or two, so that may be a factor if people are asking CA for rebuttals. Anyway, you’re entitled to your opinion—I’m far less impressed with White’s arguments than you are (and I think he’s been responded to quite thoroughly anyway), but I will say I’ve learned some things in listening to debates in which he participated.

Yes, I agree, he tones it down a lot more when he’s not in front of his core audience. I don’t know if you’ll ever see Hahn do a debate…has he ever? There’s that time on Bible Answer Man in '91 I think? Wasn’t really a debate but more of a sharing of views. Martignoni I like, but I don’t know that his knowledge is vast enough to respond to things White would throw at him in an oral setting. I see Martignoni as a good explainer of basic apologetics.

As for you, I think you’d do just fine vs. White, especially in a written debate. :o

One of my favorite White rebuttals was the guy William Possidento who dissected White’s book Mary: Another Redeemer on Amazon.com. Also available at Phil’s site. 🙂
