Hello all,

I’m puzzled and perplexed about the status of Jan 1st as a Day of Obligation. On the one hand, the Liturgical Calendar for Ireland 2014 implies that it might be. On the other hand, the Irish Bishop’s council doesn’t mention it as being a day. Also, when I tried to talk this over with my mother, she was absolutely adamantly sure that it wasn’t, to the point of getting angry with me. I simply can’t seem to get a straight answer out of anyone - is Jan 1st a Holy Day of Obligation for those living in Ireland, or isn’t it? Does anyone know?

According to the Irish Catholic Bishop Conference website, January 1 is not a Holy Day of Obligation.

Ditto for the UK. It is down as a solemnity, hence our sick priest (barely able to stand) staggered through the Mass for those who turned up (attendance was 10% i.e. 30 people from 2 churches). I wish we had an extra Holy Day of Obligation or two.
