I went buck wild, the fridge counts as a door too, no?

What is Blessed chalk? I’m Catholic and have never heard about this before nor am I aware of anything special during Mass. Is this one of those regional practices? Or have I been oblivious all my life and am still so? (NOT an impossibility! 😆)

Lily, I’m in the same boat. I’ve been a Catholic all my life and even an Altar server for many years and this is a first. I’m going with the Priests’ ruling on it because well they would know right

Our priest grew up in Poland, and in Germany, he said they did it in Poland, and they still do it in parts of Europe.

I did it the old fashion way…brought one of the Friars to my house after Mass to do the blessing and the markings.

I heard Blessed Chalk discussed on this board 2 days ago and Blessed Chalk discussed on We Are One Body radio yesterday and saw Blessed Chalk discussed on Fr. Heilman’s group yesterday. These are literally the only times in my long life as a Catholic I have ever heard of Blessed Chalk or door marking. I think this custom either never was done in my area of the country or else it had gone by the wayside before I was born. I doubt my church will have any chalk but I will still go to Mass, as it’s Sunday.

Maybe it’s new and it hasn’t spread to all parts of the country?
No, it’s really really old, but I don’t think it was done everywhere.

Apparently the priests used to come to your home and do it, and according to WAOB radio it started fading out when priests became less available so you could not get them to come to your home. However, the odd part is if it was done in places like Poland, that I never heard of it from anyone because I had dozens of Polish Catholic friends growing up and I sure heard about every other holiday custom they had. I think perhaps it was just not done everywhere.

It isn’t possible that it expires, right? That couldn’t possibly be the case… or can it?

Hi did not get one this time, but I guess it is because I’ve spend the feast in Spain, and I don’t think this is traditional here.

Does anybody have a link to explain about this thanks

I heard from one priest it was more of a Polish tradition. I like it and was able to get both blessed chalk and Ephiphany water this year. Both were from a parish different from mine.

Ahhh the Polish! So many customs. The chalk is new to me, I like it.

Can someone start a new thread with a calendar listing so we can anticipate what’s coming next!?

I know there’s one coming where people cut masses of greenery to decorate inside the church; another where the boys run around throwing water on the girls.

Just came from Mass. Nary a chalk stick in sight.

I guess I’ll buy a box and pester one of my favorite priests to bless it when we get a chance, then I’ll be all set for next year.

We also got blessed chalk today.

I work in atheist-heavy academia. Wonder if writing with blessed chalk can have some spiritual benefit…
