I, too, want to see Becoming Jane, but don’t know if any of it is based on Austen’s life. Well, I’m sure it is somewhat, but I love that time period anyway, so I’ll be sure to see it when it comes out.

Is it the '95 version? If so, the actor’s name is Cirian Hindes (not sure on the spelling). He’s been in a lot of movies, so i’m sure you’ve seen him before.

Ah! Cieran Hinds…watch him in The Mayor of Castorbridge and also in Spielberg’s Munich. I could watch him all day. He made Persuasion work with that incredible face that struggles to hide his passion. Watch his face after he helps Anne into the carriage. He does not hand you himself on a platter like the Hollywood puppy-boys.
Persuasion. The screenplay improved the book. I love introducing people to this lesser known Austen film. It just epitomizes why we love Austen so much. A rich background at the beginning: the stakes are already high; then romance (or past romance) walks in; complications ensue, lots of smokescreens, then the smoke clears and our heroine is in her rightful place. One friend said it was like a Cinderella story. Her Mom said it was about God seeing our silent good deeds and rewarding us. Many people see much more in this film.
I screened Persuasion for a group of older folks in a nursing home and prefaced it with: “This is a contemporary film of a romance where no one hops in the sack, there is hardly any kissing, but the passion burns throughout the story.” They ALL watched the entire film and sighed throughout. It was one of my most popular presentations with seniors. My 13 year old niece sat with me and said, “I don’t get it. Why do they talk and act so weird.” Of course, her friends had hopped in the sack with at least 3 partners by age 13 so forgive the poor girl.
Jane Austen is popular because we actually see real, honest, old-fashioned courtship with all of its frills and foibles. Men and women love these films because the lead man is serious and holds responsibilities. He does not have a lot of time for play. The lead woman is overworked, also responsible, and is searching for a man with character and morals. What a concept!

Yes, that is the version. I went to IMDB online and found his name and credits. He’s in the HBO series Rome, which is where I’ve most recently seen him. Also, I believe that one of the women in Persuasion was the poor, chatty spinster in Emma. She looked and sounded just like her.

Okay, now I have another question about Pride and Prejudice. In the movie, affer Lizzie turned down Mr. Collins’ proposal, another woman accepted his proposal and married him. I thought it was one of Lizzie’s sisters, but in the book, I just read the part where her friend Charlotte accepted Mr. Collins’ proposal. Did the movie version follow the book? We never saw (as far as I can remember) Lizzie with anyone but her sisters. I don’t remember meeting any of her girlfriends.
On another topic, Becoming Jane Austen opens Friday. I am looking forward to seeing it and hope it’s not a disappointment. I love reading books and watching movies about that time period.

The movies generally follow the book (except for the 1940’s version with Greer Garson & Lawrence Olivier which toward the end played fast and loose with the plot). Perhaps the movie makers assume that anyone watching a Jane Austen film would be so familiar with the plot that they don’t have to emphasize certain things. With all those female characters flitting about in the movie, I can see how a person could think Charlotte is one of the sisters, since she’s often at the house anyway.

I’m a huge fan of Jane Austen, although I must say, I loved the P&P mini series alot better and oddly, I prefer the original Elizabeth and the modern Mr. Darcy! Wierd, I know!
Anyway, my faves would have to be P&P and Emma, though Persuasion is right there with those two!!!
Oh, and Charlotte Lucas is one of Lizzie’s dear friends who married Mr. Collins in the book and the movies. It did follow the book, to answer your question!

I see that Becoming Jane has opened today but only in two theaters and neither are in my city. That means I have to drive up north county to see it, but I am determined to do so. I plan on seeing it Sunday after mass, so if anyone else sees it, don’t ruin it for me
I, too, hope it’s not a kissing movie. We rarely see anyone kiss in movies based on Austen’s books, but they are SOOO romantic. I love, love, love Mr. Darcy! Aren’t Keira Knightly and Mr. Darcy real-life boyfriend and girlfriend?
