It depends on your diocese, but generally the obligation to attend Mass on Jan 1 had been moved to Sunday.

Solemnities that fall on Saturdays or Mondays lose the obligation for that year, per the US Bishops.

In Canada the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, (Jan 1st) is indeed still a Holy Day of Obligation… I mention this in case some of you (Canadians) are following the free (American) calendars given out in some dioceses, on which it states that Jan 1st is not an HDO (which is the case in the U.S., as clarified by previous posts).

I always thought that since Mary was the patroness of the Americas, that we never moved her feast days. I really don’t understand why we move any of them. I think the idea was to make things easier on us since in this culture it can be hard to get off of work or something. But I think it only confuses us more. We’re always wondering if they feast day is a Holy Day of Obligation or not, and when one does come around, it’s harder to understand why missing Mass that day is gravely wrong. [/rant]

The Holy day falls under the US Bishops rule for Holy days on Saturday or Monday. It is still a Holy Day but has no obligation. So if you are able you should attend. What better to do the first thing on the first day of the year, but attend Mass and receive Holy Communion. A good way to start the year.

I agree with you Luke, it seems I’m always confused and have to call our Church to find out…but as Br. Rich has said…what a great way to start the first of the year by honoring Mary and receiving Holy Communion:yup: …I will plan to go Sat and Sun this year.

Agreed! Thanks to all who responded. I must drive 2 hours to take my husband to the airport and can’t be at Mass at 9 am on Saturday. I needed this info so I can prepare accordingly. My own personal feeling is that it’s a privilege to attend Mass daily and try to do so. God bless you all and Happy, Blessed New Year.
